I feel terrible for my kitties...

while I'm staying with my parents, so are my kitties, and they've been ruining their furniture, so my mother had them declawed last week I feel AWFUL that I allowed this to be done to them. Although they are not in pain at all (they had the laser sugery), they are just NOT the same My one cat who is usually so playful and what not is just sitting around whimpering I feel so bad that I let me mom talk me into this

Re: I feel terrible for my kitties...

They will be ok Even though you used laser surgery, there is still a healing process.

Re: I feel terrible for my kitties...

They will be fine, don't worry. My DH declawed our own cat (he wouldn't do something that he felt was barbaric or cause pain to our cat). My DH has the cats/kittens on a lot of pain meds after surgery, so they don't feel a thing.
And as you said, there are different ways to declaw, and the update techniques are much better than what they did many years ago.

I know it's natural to worry about them, they're your babies! They will be fine and back to themselves in no time. Our cat hasn't had claws for 8 years, but he thinks he does!!! He still kneads, 'scratches' things like he's sharpening his nails!

Re: I feel terrible for my kitties...

Ok. I feel a little better, thank you! I just felt so bad! The vet lied to us and told us there was NO pain and NO recovery period. I knew they were lying when they said it. They were definitely in pain and they are definitely not walking correctly. They're walking on what I would consider their 'wrists'. I think the vet's office, themselves, was what made me uncomfortable. They seemed more interested in selling me things for the cats than they did in anythign else. When we dropped them off for the surgery, they were pushing other procedures on us! I was so pissed off! Anyways, that's a whole different thread. But thanks for the reassurance!

Re: I feel terrible for my kitties...

Well, your kittens shouldn't be in ANY PAIN, because they should be on pain medication. If they are walking funny it could be because pain medication makes them VERY GROGGY and wobbly, and it's difficult to walk with bandages...maybe they are uncomfortable and feel strange.

Re: I feel terrible for my kitties...

They had no bandages! And no pain medication! Just anti-biotics. They have stitches in, and they keep biting at them. The vet said that was fine because the stitches are just precautionary

Re: I feel terrible for my kitties...

My DH does not do the laser so I'm not sure about the protocol for the laser.

Sorry to hear they tried to 'sell' you more procedures...was it spaying and neutering, because my DH will recommend that, and strongly advise it because of future problems with infections, etc...and over population.

In any event...I hope they feel better soon!

Re: I feel terrible for my kitties...

They're all spayed and neutered They're very well taken care of and in very good health, and I think it's just that we went to this vet for the procedure only, and they probably get that a lot, since they are one of the only laser surgery places in our area. I'm just a worry wart, though.
But thank you for your kind words and for helping to ease my worry!!!

Re: I feel terrible for my kitties...

My cat was declawed about 10 years ago. He hasn't been the same since--he is vicious, and bites a lot now--I think he relies on his teeth since he doesn't have claws to protect himself. He used to be so nice, but I hope his situation was rare...
