how many of you were pre approved before you starting looking for houses?

we started going to Open houses and then maybe a month or more into the process we got our pre approval!

Most real estate agents will ask you right away. Also, sellers will want to know too. I know that when we were selling our home we wouldn't let anyone look at it unless they were pre-approved. We didn't want to waste our time. It's easy to do and you probably should do it right away to see how much the banks are willing to lend you. It will help you figure out how much you can spend on a house.

We've been going to open houses and once we want to start seriously looking (in a couple of months) we'll get pre approved first. I think it's easier that way b/c if you put an offer in then you have to wait until you can get a mortgage (and you never know what things could pop up!) If you get pre approved you'll know ahead of time if there are any problems you have to deal with.
