Calling Photog-Obsessed Brides - Esp. Patken Brides AND other brides who are doing the '12th Night' Thing...
Ok - Questions for Patken Brides: Do the proofs you get - are they stamped? I was looking at someone's here, and they had his stamp on them. Also, on my visit, Doug said that he would give me my negatives --- but if I went digital, do I get a CD? That is really important to me but I wasn't sure.
When I went in there, I had a little difficulty with one gal. But then Doug came in and really blew me away with his love for the work and explained why he does things the way he does.
Not totally convinced but he did give me a good price for all that was offered.
But since I don't know whether I actually want a professional album, it's hard to cough up all that money now.
For the 12th Night or 'non-package' gals, are you concerned that it is going to end up costing you more later if you decide to do an album and to get reprints done? I'd love to get just a few reprints (one big one, two for my parents) and then all my proofs and the CD and then go from there.
But when I got my price from Patken, I was wondering if not having a package will end up being costlier. Basically - the price I got was about 700 more than the 'basic 12th night-type' of package. But if I end up doing a book later on - will it cost me the same or more? TIA!

Hey leese, the proofs that I've seen have had the stamp on the bottom from Patken. I'm curious about the digital CD question myself. I don't remember myself. If FH does I'll FM you.

If the Patken package is $700 more and includes albums and enlargements I say go for it, since it sounds like that's important to you.We are not concerned with our package costing more a la carte and expect to spend about $1500 after the wedding on our album (Soho) and some enlargements (will do them ourselves by taking to Pro-Print in the city - it's like $1 each)...we wanted the best photographer, style, personality, etc. and feel that we are getting that with Twelfth Night - price was not the only or most important factor when we decided.
ETA: The price of the album depends on which one you choose. They have albums starting at $500 and ranging all the way up to a little over a thousand. Photography is a HUGE thing, go with who you feel the most comfortable with and is willing to work with you. Good luck!

If your photos are stamped at all...you cannot get them reprinted yourself since the stamp will show up. Just keep that in mind..also some labs will NOT do reprints of professional photos since it is illegal to do so without permission for the photographer. After the wedding will always cost you more...negiotate for what you want now. before you sign anything is your chance to save money.

Doug did my whole wedding in Digital, I have a proof book with over 350 pics. They print them out for you, put them in a book for you to keep, and they keep the originals on a disk at their office and send that out when you decide on which pics to put in your album. Our album disk just came back for the SOHO album, can't wait to see it!!

I had the exact same dilemma with the two. I knew I wanted one or the other and I wasn't sure. I asked a girl from patken about whether we get to keep the cd. She told me 'no'. So then I really began contimplating which one to choose. I went with Patken- and my rationale was at least I get to walk away with something other than my pictures on a dvd. Although its a great idea (what 12th night does) I felt more sure about having a more finished product after all was said and done. I don't know if that helps.

Re: Calling Photog-Obsessed Brides - Esp. Patken Brides AND other brides who are doing the '12th Night' Thing...
Thanks everyone...One of our MUSTS is the CD with the photos. I know I can get reprints anywhere. When I talked to Doug, he told me that I could get the negatives and the files... I think.
Also, if I get proofs with the stamp on them, I'm not happy... so that's an issue I guess.
My issue with wanting at 12th Night-type of photog. is that I'm not concerend with reprints or Thank You Card pics (which is like a value of 50 and you can do them on Shutterfly). My biggest concern is the photographer and that they are interested in doing my wedding and that the work is amazing.
One of the reasons I was drawn to Patken, however, was that if I end up paying MORE in the end, I don't know if it's WORTH it to do it 'my way'....
Hmm...any other thoughts?

If I recall correctly, when I met with Patken, I was told I would get the negatives 6 months after the album pick-up.

Patken told me I could get my negatives 1 year after choosing the album. I wasn't aware of the stamp on the proofs. I already left a deposit with Patken, but I think I'm going to get it back and go with Silverfox.

We went with 12th Night...I love that you don't have to decide on a 'package.' We're not worried that it'll end up costing more bc its up to us what we want to spend...plus if we're not ready to put an album together right away...we can wait...we'll still have the DVD's to show people and we can always get our favorite pictures developed in the meantime.

Leese - to add a bit more, in case it helps - you get ALL negatives, ALL unmarked proofs (I was promised well over 1000) and all digital shots in a DVD from Twelfth Night...enlargements are not that much and albums either (depending on which one you want). Go with whomever you feel will capture your day best and will give you greater control of your day...Good luck!

Thanks SomethingBlu - but when I met with Dom, he told me it was just the DVD and no proofs. That is one thing that isn't making me happy, because I want proofs too.

Re: Calling Photog-Obsessed Brides - Esp. Patken Brides AND other brides who are doing the '12th Night' Thing...
To clarify with Patken, The negative number is stamped on the bottom, not across the pic. You can easily remove it. Doug also told me I could have my pics on a disk:-It would be set to music and at a very low 'copy' quality. Meaning the pic would be pixelated if tried to copy or printed.Be careful who you bring the pic to, they print them out on 'Professional Copywrited Paper', drugstores and photo places will not copy pics that are professional unless you have permission of the photographer. You have to understand, pics are their livelyhood.. Even though they can be overpriced, they wouldn't be making any money if Everyone can go to their local CVS and make reprints of everything.
Just something to think about..

Thanks - I did see that on the proofs. I think that for me, it's more important to get that CD and all the proofs as soon as possible. Do you know when Patken would get you those pics on the DVD picture show? Was it a long time?

Re: Calling Photog-Obsessed Brides - Esp. Patken Brides AND other brides who are doing the '12th Night' Thing...
Since I just made a 2nd professional wedding album I can give you a run down of options you have to make your own album.1. Costs: it is cheaper to make prints of 4x6's and 5x7's($5-7) but 8x10's average $15+ each when printed by a lab. If you use shutterfly, I must caution you that the prints are not as vivid as the professional pics since there is no color correcting involved like you would get with a lab so it may cost less but the pics are not 'corrected'.
2. Wedding albums like art leather/renaissance etc charge btw 75-120 for the album cover and the inserts/pages are $7.50-8 each depending on how many pages you want in an lbum. So 18 inserts gives you 36 pages, but then you need mats and the lowest price I found was 1.50 per mat. So figure about 300.00 for a 36pg album with names & weding date.(no pics included)

Re: Calling Photog-Obsessed Brides - Esp. Patken Brides AND other brides who are doing the '12th Night' Thing...
I know there are a lot of Patken fans here. You may not like what I have to say. I contacted them and I was not impressed. The girl I spoke to on the phone said, 'Well, our cheapest package is $2300, so call us back if you can afford us.' It was a really DUMB thing of her to say because, little did she know, we are considering up to $6,000 for a photographer, not incl. video. I loved my friends pictures from Patken but if that is how they talk to people I am not interested.

Patken was the first photographer I went to see...and foolishly, I booked them on the spot. Now I want to switch to Silverfox. We'll see how fast they give me my $$ back. Silverfox gives you HI-RES photos on CD and on their website they say 'feel free to print them yourself'. Also, the proofs have no markings on them, but I did forget to ask if I could get the negatives.

Re: Calling Photog-Obsessed Brides - Esp. Patken Brides AND other brides who are doing the '12th Night' Thing...
Some of the auxillary help at Patken are difficult to deal with that is why I only dealt with my photographer once I booked. You get 5x5 (i think) proofs in a book and they are not stamed but they have a copyright at the bottom that you could easily trim off with a paper cutter if you wanted to frame them. But really them being stamped or not is a non issue if they give you the proofs.
We had film and digital and when our album is done we will get the negatives/CD for both.
