Re: Interesting article on A-Rod
I would have liked nothing better than to have seen A-Rod go somewhere else last year...he's in the game for HIMSELF and to WIN A RING - but a team player, well I just don't see that in him and it infuriates me
The key to the Yankees success in the late 90s was that they played as a TEAM.. there were no dominant "superstar" on the field - but together they had great chemisty and didn't focus on their individual 'numbers.' Playing "little ball" was what Torre taught them , playing a more "national league" style of game .. and it WORKED for them. As a TEAM they did whatever it took to WIN games... And being the STAR on the field was secondary to that group of players. That is why that group of players (Jeter, O'Neill, Tino, Girardi, Petitte, etc) was and are STILL so beloved.
If I have to make a comparison, those Yankee teams reminded me of what Boston pulled off last year .. Boston had the drive, they worked well as a team. The Yankee organization, for all the money they invested last year, didn't have 1/2 their spark. And A-ROD was a HUGE part of their collapse
A-Rod is not that type of team player IMO... he's got great numbers, he hits home runs.. he's adjusting to 3rd base.. but I don't feel like he jells with his teammates at all
I DO HOPE this IMPROVES this year, because already there is a prominant A-ROD backlash and I know that for the insane amount of moola he is raking in, he better perform this year on an EXCEPTIONAL level

Re: Interesting article on A-Rod
A-Rod just homered to make today's score Boston 2- Yankees 1. That helps a little bit!
ETA: Felicia, I totally agree with your points about the "team spirit" of the great 1990s teams. I think that ever since they got Giambi and lost Tino, Paul O'Neill, Scott Brosius, and a lot of the "old guard" almost all at once, they started looking shakier. Wasn't Giambi's fault -- just the way the team changed so dramatically had unfortunate effects...
