Honeymoon question: Italy

We are thinking about taking a trip to Italy for our honeymoon. Has anyone ever gone? Also, can anyone recommed a tour...we thought that would be a good idea.

Re: Honeymoon question: Italy

I just booked our honeymoon for Italy. 4 nights in Rome and 4 in Florence. Our travel agent found an individual package. It includes airfare, the hotel stays, first class train from Rome to Florence, 1/2 day tours in each city and breakfast each morning. It also includes all the taxes and fees. It was a great deal.

I was thinking of a group tour, but that is too high adventure for us on our honeymoon - too restrictive and fast paced. Also, we wanted to be able to spend time alone together.

Try a travel agent. She found this deal for us.

Re: Honeymoon question: Italy

i MUST highly reccomend Contiki Tours, which are for people age 35 and under. we did the 'simply italy' tour, and it was such a great way to get a taste of italy's most famous and beautiful towns. It included rome, pisa, florence, venice, sorrento, capri, assisi, san geminiano, and plenty of small town stops along the way. and don't be nervous because they call it a 'budget tour'. the hotels were really nice!!!! and you cant beat the prices compared to perillo, or other tours that i priced. not to knock perillo, but you would be the youngest ones there by 30 or so years!!!! fm me if you want more info.........

Re: Honeymoon question: Italy

I have been on 2 tours to Italy. On the first one, there was a newlywed couple.

Here is my advice - DONT DO A TOUR!!!

We were so busy doing things that the poor newlyweds rarely had any alone time! We were so tired by the end of the night and so excited about everthing we were doing that I can't imagine they had any couple time. There was one night when they went to bed early and we were all like 'awww' b/c it was very obvious when people left the group.

IMO - save a tour for your first anniversary or something - for a honeymoon - if you want any romantic alone time - don't do the tour.

Of course, this is all my opinion.

Other than that - both tours were excellent and if you have any specific questions - I would love to help!!!

Re: Honeymoon question: Italy

DH and I did Italy for our honeymoon. Rome, Capri and Positano. We didn't do a tour, but we booked through a travel agent and we got a nice package. I have to agree with the statement 'Do not do a tour for your honeymoon' We thought about it but were so much happier going on our own. We were able to sleep late and go out later and do things when we wanted to do them and if we wanted to stay in our room and 'be newlyweds' we did!

I want to go back to Italy!!!

Hey everyone...I appreciate your thoughts...I am surprised about the no tour theme...:) You all have a good point...I don't think I'd want to be running around...want to go it at our own pace...Thanks.

Re: Honeymoon question: Italy

We went to Italy for our honeymoon. And I also helped two friends plans their honeymoons to Italy (one is there right now!). Neither had ever been to Italy and neither is doing a tour. In my opinion on your honeymoon you should operate at your own pace being able to tour when you want to and lounge out when you want to. It is very easy to get around so you don't need a tour guide to take you around. Just get a travel book

Re: Honeymoon question: Italy

We're going in October for our 'real' honeymoon A friend of mine runs tours around the world, and this year, it's in Italy. We are going to I believe Northern Italy, including Potenza, Sorento and a bunch of other towns. I believe the cost is about $3500/pp and includes airfare, all hotels, transportation, almost all dinners, all breakfast and some lunches. It's a great deal IMO and I can't wait to go!!!!

Wow - $3500 per person!

My honeymoon trip (an individual tour package that I posted above) is under $3500 for both of us. It includes all the things I mentioned above plus transportation to/from airport (I forgot about that) but does not include dinner or lunches.

How many nights does your trip include?

Re: Honeymoon question: Italy

I went to Italy for my High school trip- Rome, Florence and Venice!

Venice is a MUST if you go to Italy. We did a tour through ACIS (i think its for students though not sure) I thought it was great and very informative but again if you want to go at your own pace then Id probably just get a travel book and follow that. You could always get good advice from these girls on this board! GOOD LUCK!!

Re: Honeymoon question: Italy

you really can't go wrong with a trip to Italy. if you wedding is in spring/summer, airfare may be higher.

Tuscany is awesome and there are so many picturesque towns..

Siena is one of my all time favorites- of course Venice (romantic) Florence, Rome, Verona is also beautiful. Milan is my fav big city (forza rossoneri!)

the first time I went, I did a little research and planned the trip myself. Travelocity is a great source, also pick up a guide book. I used both Frommers and Rick Steves (great budget travel book) and now I would never book a tour, it's best discoverd by yourself.

in the south, Capri, Naples, Pompeii, and Taormina & syracusa on Sicily are all worthwhile. good luck and happy planning.

Re: Honeymoon question: Italy

Italy is absolutely beautiful! I may be biased though because my dad is from there and about 90% of my family is still there. I've been there many times. I can't reccomend a tour because whenever I go I just stay with family and do things with them. I'm partial to the south since that's where my family is, but I loved Florance. You have to see Florance!

Re: Honeymoon question: Italy

Italy is extremely romantic. I highly recommend travling to Tuscany. Florence is a MUST. Go visit vineyards on the Chianti trail.

I went in Octber 2 years ago and had a wonderful time. A friend of the family is also getting married in Tuscany this year.

I aslo wouldn't do a Tour, but I don't like being stuck on those buses. If you're proactive enough and do a bit of research you can create your own itinerary. Just start with one of those Fodors or Frommers travel books. Thats what we did.

Re: Honeymoon question: Italy

OK well here is my take on the TOUR.

I did the tour for our HM. And there is A LOT of time you get to be solo....In fact we thought TOO MUCH TIME.

We are not fans of wandering in the streets looking for things to do.
Our tour was FABULOUS and i HIGHLY recommend doing one. OUR biggest reason for doing one is that i don't know when we will go back so we wanted see the MOST while we could...and being on a tour DOES THAT. NOR did i want to drive in Italy...not our thing.
We got in all the site LONG before any 'non-tour' people did....The lines to get into things (ex. Vatican) ARE OUTRAGEOUS. Because we were on a tour we jumped in front of everyone and were out before we saw the people on the line (before we went in) STILL OUT THERE!
EVERY SINGLE DAY you had at minimum 5-6 plus hours of alone time. Like i said, we would have actually like to have LESS solo time.
Tours 8 out of 11 night meals were included....MEALS ARE EXPENSIVE there in the restaurants. We saved money.
I have to say my HM was FABULOUS.

BUT there are times you should be careful because of the floods in Venice and the hot weather in summer!
If you want more info....FM me

Re: Honeymoon question: Italy

Thanks for the response. We are also not a fan of finding places to hunt...food, sites, etc...What tour did you go on? I would love to research it more...If you get a moment let me know. I would appreciate it. Thanks.
