Duet proofs are in: Good news and bad news

I finally got my Duet proofs. Woo and Joseph got some gorgeous shots but many of our color shots taken outdoors came out weird. They are very washed out looking - sort of like there is a tint of color but not the whole color. In some of them, it looks like DH and I are fake looking or not part of the surroundings!! I am not sure if Duet was trying to create some effect, but I hate them. Worse thing is, these shots are some of the most amazing shots of the two of us by the water in Port Jeff!!! They would be the ones I would frame if not for the color!!!!

I need to call Duet and inquire about this. I am praying these shots can be re-touched or re-printed. Duet brides - have you had this problem? Also, do you know if they can make good color reprints from BxW shots?

At least half of my proofs are BxW! We told Duet we did not like BxW shots that much and preferred color but they convinced us to have some so nothing was written into my contract. However, when we met with Woo and Joseph before the wedding to go over our list, I mentioned this again. I never expected that half of my proofs would be BxW.

Oh NO!
I used Duet and did not have that problem... I used different photographers though.
Hopefully they can edit the pictures the way you want them!!

Re: Duet proofs are in: Good news and bad news

Ask them for your CDs of proofs. Tell them you are not happy and you want to look through the disks. All of the photos on the disks are in color. THey make some of them B&W when they give them to you to show a different effect. I had a problem with them and they gave me the disks and were very quick to help me solve the problem at hand. Tell them what you want and they will do their best to fix it. Best of luck and questions feel free to FM me.

Re: Duet proofs are in: Good news and bad news

Generally whenever you reproduce a number of prints or proofs or whatever, they're not of the best quality because they're not developed individually (they go through a machine). When you ask for an enlargement or reproduction, the lab makes one picture at a time and can therefore focus on color, contrast, etc. Your photos can also be enhanced digitally. That said, if the color problem is really major (if the film has been totally overexposed and no color EXISTS on the film at all) they're not going to be able to do much about it. You should definitely talk to them about it.

Also, you can discard the color information in a color photo, making it B&W, but you can't go the other way - ie, make a B&W into a color without actually 'coloring' it digitally in which case you'll most likely lose subtleties in tone, shading, etc.

Re: Duet proofs are in: Good news and bad news

danielle, i'm sorry to hear you're upset...and i totally understand how you feel. i have many pics missing. after getting hysterically upset, i'm working through it. i also have yet to talk to photographer--she was supposed to call me back yesterday and blew me off. i just hope yours are cooperative and do all they can to help. try and not dwell on it...i am finding myself replaying the day--doing the should've scenarios. i should've put someone in charge of the list, should've pinned my dress in place-it slips down a little and looks off in a few photos...but you know what! you had a great day! all you could do was rave and remember that feeling of the day. you'll get through the photo thing and there will many memorable moments ahead to capture!

Re: Duet proofs are in: Good news and bad news

I didn't have that problem but I also had different photographers. It sounds like a proof developing issue, hopefully not a film exposure or developing issue. Which means that an actual print will look much better. I would definitely bring up your concerns with them and see what they can do to fix the problem.

Re: Duet proofs are in: Good news and bad news

danielle! i have some news that may help you! my photographer finally called and she was in touch with a lab that does amazing work and is going to put me in the picture with photoshop. so my in-laws will never know and they'll have a picture of the whole family. i'm excited...when its done i'll let you know how it goes and pass on the lab info. hopefully after duet fixes they problems you won't have any issues to fix but if you do there are photolabs just for this kind of thing.

Re: Duet proofs are in: Good news and bad news

Hey, that's pretty cool! And that is great that you will be able to show your inlaws the photos of you and the whole family together!

I spoke to Duet and they will re-print the proofs that we feel have a very fake, unnatural color to them. I am hoping that the re-prints will look good - otherwise, the problem is with their printing technology and we won't be able to enjoy some of the best shots and poses in the whole set of proofs!

Unfortunately, they said they can't make color photos from the BxW film, so looks like we may be stuck having WAY more BxW photos than we wanted. They are going to look at the other proofs they didn't send us (I guess these are ones they felt were not winners) and send us some more of those in color.

So far they seem to be willing to make things better for us. We just got a new computer and once we get everything set up, I will start scanning some of the good proofs to post on line.

Thanks Christian and everyone for your input!
Danielle
