SWR: Need Help w/ Baby Shower location (again)**DRAMA****UPDATE--MUST READ****

Okay, my MOH's mom called me about a week ago to start brainstorming for the baby shower. MOH is due Dec 15, but we all think she's going to go early, so we're had decided the shower would be in end of Oct. Her mom and I decided on Sunday Oct 23 either 12-4 or 1-5. Fine.

MOH lives in W. Babylon, her mom and I live in Queens (but I work in Suffolk), and I offer to check out some restaurants for the shower. The guest list is small (20-25), so her mom thought a restaurant would be great. She said no alcohol and wants to stay under $1000. Fine. I make some calls and planned on going to some places this week.

MOH comes to work Tues saying that her mom (who had been staying with them all weekend) was insisting on going to see a place w/ MOH's husband's mom (who is up visiting from FL), but she (husband's mom) was busy and MOH's mom got upset and made the husband take her.

Today the husband calls me to see if MOH's mom had called me, I tell him yes, a week ago. He said 'No, since last night?' Then goes on to tell me that they went to a place and she left a deposit. Okay. I then ask when and where... Here's the kicker...
It's now on Saturday (she knows I work Saturdays until at least 2pm) from 1-4pm at the Chinese Buffet in North Babylon.

Please forgive me, I am not knocking the place (it'd be in a pvt room), but come on, my MOH is 36 (37 in Dec) and this is her 1st child! He told me it was $10/pp. I am a little upset b/c I wanted to be SOMEWHAT involved. PLUS...MOH made it VERY clear she did not want the shower in Sept, b/c it's TOO soon. Hello?!?! It's practically in Sept now! The husband did say that it's earlier b/c his mom will still be here from FL. Fine.

SO, now I want to call and go to some other places then call her (she doesn't know the husband called me) and say 'Okay, here is what I found and they are holding the date for me' FYI, I called Villa Lombardis (just for kicks) their shower pkg is $29.95/pp! Even if we have 25 people, that is under $1000 INCL tax and grat!

PLEASE!!! Any suggestions!?!?!?! TIA!!!!!

-Jill

Re: SWR: Need Help w/ Baby Shower location (again)**DRAMA**

There is a place called classic American in W babylon. 226-3663
They are closed on Sundays but I think they open that day for private parties. it is small, but 25 people would fit. Healthy choices and delicious!!! I love eating there. I say try it out... The chinese buffet in N Babylon made me sick to my stomache last time I ate there and the room you would be in is REALLY small!!
Sorry if I upset you, but I think you should put your foot down an at least change the place!!

Id just talk to the mom and tell her you could get a better deal at a nicer place. Would she lose her deposit?

I just went to a great place. We rented out the whole restaurant. I think it was Mimis in Syossett. I dont know if that would help you though. It was a Sunday from 12 - 4.

Re: SWR: Need Help w/ Baby Shower location (again)**DRAMA**

Sorry I have no venue suggestions - but I agree with you, if you have the budget for it, she definetely deserves something better than a chinese buffet at $10/head. Good luck!

Re: SWR: Need Help w/ Baby Shower location (again)**DRAMA**

I would definitely tell your friend's mother what is going on and explain that you think it is too early and that the chinese buffet isn't exactly what you think your friend would like. I may sound snobby but I wouldn't want to throw my friend's baby shower at the chinese buffet. Do all the guests have to go up and serve themselves with other guests within the restaurant? You could use that and the fact that your friend will be pregnant and that her doctor has told her not to eat at buffets, because of germ and bacterial risks!!!

I actually have to agree with Amy! Yes...tell her you found a nicer place for a lot less. Make up some story about your MOH hates Chinese Buffets if you have to...this is her first Baby Shower...it should be SPECIAL...this is a toughie...

ETA: Villa Lombardi's for $29.95? Holy cow, how could you pass that up? Your MOH would LOVE it! Do they have a minimum!

Honestly, how much money could he have put down $20, that would be 10% of the cost!

Re: SWR: Need Help w/ Baby Shower location (again)**DRAMA**

Some suggestions, just went to a wedding shower at Vittorios in Amityville 631-264-3333.
It was awesome, the food, service and the room.
Butera's in Woodbury- Good food, I've been to a baby shower there...you have the whole restaurant.
Friend of a Farmer in Roslyn- They do awesome brunch showers for reasonable prices.
Good Luck

Re: SWR: Need Help w/ Baby Shower location (again)**DRAMA**

Thank you all for the suggestions. I will be calling them shortly. But to answer some questions... She left a $50 deposit. I told my FH that I'd give her mom $100 to NOT have it at the Chinese Buffet!!!!

When I told FH about the venue, he said he almost spit his gum out in shock! And I told another good friend about it and he laughed out loud!

This is about as bad as when I jokingly suggested to my FSIL that we have FBIL's wife's shower at Sizzler and she said 'Okay'. hi, it was a JOKE!

I am willing to foot the whole bill just to ensure she has the shower she deserves!

I will let you all know how it goes!! Thanks again!!!

Three village inn, Milk and sugar cafe, med. manor, lois xvi ( a little expensive), The crestwood, cafe joelle... These places are nice.

It is kinda funny, sorry. If the mom insists on Chinese buffet, its not terrible, You can just get your friend extra nice gifts.

If it stays at the Chinese Buffet, I am telling you now, I will make sure everyone knows it was her mom's decision.

Re: SWR: Need Help w/ Baby Shower location (again)**DRAMA**

i know this is a bit far jill but the riverhead polish hall has a private room the garden room with an outside entrance the food is really good and you get the place all to yourself.

i think you should find your own place and tell the mom i reserved X for the baby shower - they just need a headcount - dont even let on that you know about the chinese buffet,
i for one would be horrified if i got an invite to a baby shower at the chinese buffet.

i am sorry you have to deal with this crap - dont let the mom get away with being a cheap a**.

now i have heard everything

Re: SWR: Need Help w/ Baby Shower location (again)**DRAMA**

Holy crap all I have to say is thank GOD my mom is paying for my shower and insisting on a nice restaurant!!!

My aunt inisisted on renting a room and home cooking all of the food for my MOH's shower. (She's my cousin and I was her MOH) I wanted a restaurant, but her being the mother, she won the battle. While some people think a pot luck shower is fine, I for one, would prefer everyone to be served instead of the 'serve yourself' variety, which is how it would be at a Chinese Buffet!!!

I love the Chinese Buffet in Islandia, but if my shower was held there, I think I would actually leave my own shower!!!

Re: SWR: Need Help w/ Baby Shower location (again)**DRAMA****UPDATE--MUST READ****

Okay, first, thank you all for your ideas and suggestions. Here is the update.

I had made a list of about 10-12 places to call. I called most of them, and prepared to call MOH's mom tonight.

I get home, and in the mail I find...
AN INVITATION TO THE SHOWER!!!!!!!!!!

SO, I am throwing out my original plan, and will now concentrate on making the best of what I have to work with!

Again, thanks for ALL your ideas!!

Yo, her mom's is a biatch!

I am so upset for you...I can't believe you weren't even allowed to send out the invites you wanted...and HER DAUGHTER DOESN'T WANT HER SHOWER IN SEPTEMBER! Mom sounds like a handful, I am so sorry!

ETA: I am still in shock, but am wondering what happened...why did her mom completely leave you out of the planning? Grrrrrrrrrrrr I would be so pissed if that was my mom!
It has NOTHING to do with the place...but rather with the pregnant woman's wishes...and the fact that it's her 1st baby...geez!

ETA: Again, because this time I had time to calm down and think (somewhat)...
Her mom is not a biatch...I so take that back. Being so would mean not caring, not booking anything, not sending invites, not making an effort. She seems gun ho about this shower and it stinks that you're left out of it but I hope it turns out amazingly great and your friend/MOH is 'showered' with love, family and friends!

I now return to my normal thinking abilities!
