Kauai Must Dos:
Activities Na Pali Coast Snorkeling or Scuba Diving: Most definitely do a snorkeling/scuba diving tour of the Na Pali coast. So worth it! We did a cave raft tour. It was really cool cause we got to go into the caves on the coast, as well as go snorkeling (they have lots of fish, turtles, etc - very exciting!). If you like natural beauty, you will love this. The cliffs are spectacular (i think a bunch of movies were filmed there too - maybe Jurassic park and that action movie with Anne Heche).
Luau - either on Maui or Kauai you definitely need to do a Luau.
Visit Waimea Canyon - we drove up along the Waimea Canyon on the day of our flight out. It was very beautiful (a little scary cause you go so high and the canyon is so deep). The dirt in Kauai is red, so the colors of the canyon were spectacular.
Restaurants - Brenneke's Beach Broiler - the best restaurante we went to. You totally get your money's worth. Everything in Hawaii is expensive and so many of the restaurants cost a fortune and give you these teeny tiny portions, but Brennecke's gave us great tasting food and great sized meals. Make sure you make a reservation cause it is packed. The ono and ahi are phenomenal. I would kill to go back there just to eat at this restaurant. They also had these bluish rolls that were so good.
Definitely rent a car. There is literally no public transportation in Kauai.
Check out Lappert's. This is Kauai's ice cream chain and they have the best ice cream. I think we visited about 4 Lappert's while on the island - they were just so good!

Re: maui and kauai..... what are the must do's on this island????
Maui -
We loved our snorkel trip to Molokini!! But try to book it through a place like Boss Froggs or Snorkle Bobs, they had good prices. "Gourmet" lunches on the catamarans aren't very gourmet and they just jack up the price alot.
Stayed in a condo - LOVED IT! The owner Kevin rents it directly and not thru expedia so you get exactly what you see & not the "sample pics"
http://mauiparadisecondo.com
The Road to Hana - there really isn't much in Hana besides a beach. The road there though is very beautiful with some wonderful scenery. If you can afford to do a bus there & not drive it - go for it - the drive was tough after the first 2hrs.
Avoid! The Garden of Eden - on the Road to Hana - just a tourist trap & the parots they show you on the way in aren't included in the price - they are $20 extra
Avoid! Activities 4 Less - there are other places too & if it seems to good...it is - can get free activities & discounts if you want to go for a time share sales pitch
Kuai -
We did the Thahiti Luau and it was nice - nothing to rave about so maybe look into the Old Lahiana Lua on Maui
The Coconut marketplace is no different than the Poipu Shopping Village - save yourself the trip if you are staying in Poipu
Lapperts Ice Cream!! Eat as much as you can - its amazing!! Mmmm I had vanilla ice cream with mac nuts, coconut, and a fudge ripple
Walmart & Price Club had the best prices on souveneirs like Kona Coffee, Mac nuts & Chocolates
**We needed a ar on Maui & Kuai but not Oahu. If you use a cab on Oahu be prepared it is $45 one way from the airport to the hotel - loo for the Shuttle buses they run $7-$9pp

In Maui we did the "Feast at Lele". Its an authentic Luau that is pretty much for adults only (romantic, beautiful beach setting) and they serve 5 courses and dessert. Definitely worth going to!

Is Maui a driving distance from Kauai? We are staying on Kauai but would like to visit Maui while we are there.

You have to fly to each individual island. You have to take inter island flights. It is about a 45 minute fly from Maui to Kaui.
