yeah, free! Better than the $97 I had to pay because I didn't look at my passport and realized I missed the one year mark by 2 weeks!

Re: Just sent away for my new and 'FREE' passport (name change)

I sent my original marriage certificate because I thought that was my only option. After reading this post I wish I would have known that prior. MY DH and I's original birth certificates were sent away for our passports a year ago, and they are still MIA!!!!

OMG! they never sent you the original birth certificates back? that was my biggest fear when I had to send mine away.

I called the town of Islip (where I got my marriage license from) and they're the one's who told me you can use a certified copy when changing your name on your passport. They told me that you should never send the original away... after a little digging, I found it on the passport website as well (that you can send a copy). I wish these things were more clear sending away from this &*^%$ passport was the biggest pain in the @SS!

Re: Just sent away for my new and 'FREE' passport (name change)

If for any reason, I don't receive my original back I will obviously go and get another one at the town hall. The birth certificates at this point are long gone so the passport agency probably have no clue where they are. How ridiculous is that? You would think documents like this would be held at a high regard. Eventually I will go and get my husband and I's original birth certificates but no rush.

I better change mine before I forget. I just got mine about 7 months ago. I would hate to have to pay all over again.

when did you send away for your new passport?

I hate to be the bearer of this news… but if you don’t get the original back, you’re only option is to get a certified copy. Which is basically a printout with all the information and a raised seal. It’s not on that nice paper with the gold seal.

but you will get it back.... positive vibes!!!!!

Re: Just sent away for my new and 'FREE' passport (name change)

I just sent my passport and license, etc away on Saturday, priority mail. I don't expect it until at least another week or so.

I'm not that concerned about the look of it, I am concerned with if it's valid and ready for use if needed.

What an annoying tedious process!

How do you get a certified copy of your marriage license? Do you apply for it at Town Hall?

you have to go to the town hall where your certificate was issued. I see you're not married yet, so you would have to wait until after you get your orginal.

just go there with your drivers license, it's $10.

You can check the passport site for a status of your passport. I was neurotic about checking because I needed it for this weekend and sent it in the beginning of April, they told me that it could take up to 8 weeks because it's their busy time.

Re: Just sent away for my new and 'FREE' passport (name change)

While we're on the topic. I have yet to send in for a new passport. Can I travel with my one with my maiden name...I am nervous that if I send it in now I might not get it back in time, in case I need it during the summer.
All my other id's have my married name on them!!!

you can use it only if your plane tickets are in your maiden name. they have to match.
