My 4th of July story! (Long, but freaking funny)
You have to understand how much I wanted to watch the fireworks with my DH last night. We typically work on the 4th, so it was a big deal for us to actually have the night off together. We were deciding between Port Jeff and Bald Hill. Although we weren't sure where the Port Jeff fireworks were (we don't know LI that well), my DH knew I wanted to see a Grucci display. It said they were at the East Beach. We couldn't find that on a map. A guy he worked with said he used to watch the Port Jeff fireworks at the pier. We knew where the pier was!!
So, we get to the pier around 8:30 and actually find a bench! Heaven! We are surrounded by hundreds of people talking about the fireworks. Then we see a small sign (on 8x11 paper) saying the fireworks would not be visible from the marina tonight. We brought this to the attention of those around us. One guy tells us 'Oh, yes, if you go up the hill you can see them there. Trust me, they've already closed the street off, so don't drive' (I will never forget these words.) Others reiterate what he is saying as they leave the pier. They state 'that's where we're going now anyway'
So we set off up the hill. (Now, if you haven't been there before you don't realize that this hill is about a 50 degree incline) We climb it with other people, and families with strollers and kids. (We never did realize when we lost these families.) We figured they turned around and went home. We kept on going, following cars. After about 1 mile we wondered why we didn't drive. But we figured it was soon.
To make a long story a bit shorter:
People slowed down to ask us where the fireworks were. We stated we didn't know. We were told to walk. After 2 1/2 miles we got close to the fireworks as they began. We could see them through the trees, a few sprays here and there. We walked faster, but never got there. We had no idea where we were. The road had no lights and we just waited for an axe murderer to claim us. There went the finale: we heard it through the trees. Now we were really lost.
We had to call a cab to an intersection where we were. The company said 'So, you're just two people standing outside at an intersection?' I said yes. They laughed.
So, if you went to the Port Jeff fireworks last night and saw two people standing by the big tree at an intersection right outside of the Port Jeff CC, that was us. Why couldn't they have just said the fireworks were at the Port Jeff CC? I doubt we'll ever have a July 4th off again together. We should have gone to Bald HIll.
Back home (In upstate) there are signs pointing out where to go see the fireworks at every intersection. Now I realize that LI is not the same. Being the people that we are; once the cab dropped us off at our car, we drove the route we walked. We stopped short of the entrance of the CC, which was nearly 3 miles away!
We decided not to go to the gym today.

Awwwwwwwww I'm sorry to hear the fireworks didn't work out for you, but realize you'll have a story to tell your kids down the road.

I feel tired reading that and I didn't even walk!
Maybe next time you go with people who have already been there so you don't need to plan it yourself!
At least you weren't at Jones Beach where they had to evacuate thousands of people because of the lightning storm.

I can't believe you walked all of that way to listen to fireworks!!! It's nice that you got to know the area (in the dark) and you certainly got a good workout!
