Is anyone considering doing a donation to a charity as their wedding favor?

We had decided last summer that we wanted to donate money to the Atlantis Marine World rescue program in lieu of a favor for our wedding. We figured that we would have cards printed up saying 'in lieu of a favor a donation has been made in your name...' The only thing was I mentioned the idea to a couple of people and they were like 'Oh.' So I thought people might think it was a cheap way out or something.
So I decided to do something else as a favor.
Now, Im on the fence again, I saw an ad in the paper last Sunday for the Atlantis Marine World and it showed a picture of a seal who had been rescued and I felt so guilty I cried.
Do you think its ok to do this type of favor? And if so, how much money should you donate? I figure a certain $$ amount for each person, but I have no clue how much.
Thanks for your help

Re: Is anyone considering doing a donation to a charity as their wedding favor?

I think it is a very nice idea. I myself have decided on something different but my brother & my sister-in-law did this. They made donations to Hospice of Long Island. They had something printed up that said a donation has been made in your name which they then inserted into a small picture frame. I thought that it was very nice.

Good Luck

Jodi

Re: Is anyone considering doing a donation to a charity as their wedding favor?

We are going to donate on our guests behalf (in lieu of favors) to the American Cancer Society. Unfortunately, in the past few years, this is a cause that has hit close to home. We've seen firsthand the wonderful work they do. If anyone is interested, they have a website with a phone # to call for wedding donation info. They will even print up personalized scrolls for you to give out to your guests.

I think donations like this are a thoughtful idea. I'd just check on the charity...there's a website where you can look up charity and see how much of the money donated to them goes to the cause, how much is tied up in administrative stuff, things like that. I can't remember the url...

Your friends and family will be supportive no matter what you do. Do what will make you and FH feel best!!

Good luck, and happy planning!!

Re: Is anyone considering doing a donation to a charity as their wedding favor?

We are also doing a donation. We are making a donation to the Twin Towers Fund and are handing out cards with an American Flag pin attached to it stating what we did.
Anyone who asks, I tell them this, and they think it's a great gesture. Do what you want to do, and don't be influenced by other people. Making a donation to ANY charity is a thoughtful thing to do.

Re: Is anyone considering doing a donation to a charity as their wedding favor?

I am also doing a donation, to the Staten Island University Hospice. I think it's such a better thing to do than give out favors that most likely no one will use. I have so many favors lying around my house! If that's what you'd like to do, don't let any one talk you out of it. Remember, you can't please everyone so just do what you'd like for your wedding! Good Luck!

Re: Is anyone considering doing a donation to a charity as their wedding favor?

We are doing a donation to the Cancer Society also. We are going to make up a little card and attach it to a piece of candy or something to explain what we did. I know some people expect a traditional favor but I think this is money better spent.

Re: Is anyone considering doing a donation to a charity as their wedding favor?

We're also doing a donation as a favor in memory of my FH mother. I have been to weddings where a donation was made and always thought it was a nice idea.
For those that are doing a donation, could someone share the exact wording that you will use? I remember reading in a bridal magazine that 'in lieu of' isn't the right wording to use. But I have way too many magazines, and I can't find it again.

Happy planning!

Re: Is anyone considering doing a donation to a charity as their wedding favor?

I was thinking of donating to either hospice or the cancer society. We just lost my nana, and my FFIL to cancer, so I thought this would be great. But the weird thing is my FH isnt sure about doing it. Anyway I think it is an amazing gesture. It will be money well spent.

Re: Is anyone considering doing a donation to a charity as their wedding favor?

This is the wording we are using:
We would like to thank you all for
celebrating with us on our special day.

In lieu of a traditional wedding favor, we have made a donation in your name to The Twin Towers Fund.

May God comfort our fallen Americans, brave heroes, and their families; grant wisdom to our leaders; and protect the men and women who defend our freedom.

Re: Is anyone considering doing a donation to a charity as their wedding favor?

My FBIL and his wife did this for their wedding. The groom's mother passed away from cancer and the bride's father passed away from liver disease. Therefore, in memory of the Groom's mother tey made donations to the American Cancer Society, and in memory of the Bride's father, a donation to the Liver Foundation.

They made a note, sort of had an invitation look, and put it on everyone's plate. It was beautiful.

Hi,

The website for the American Cancer Society is www.cancer.org

Here's where they discuss wedding donations:

Sorry for the long link!!

Re: Is anyone considering doing a donation to a charity as their wedding favor?

I think its a great idea...

but I think the people that say 'Oh' are the people
who expect SOME kind of favor. (like my mother)

someone I work with said they didn't do ANY favor for her daughters wedding...they felt they are dust collectors...probably true

do the favor and then something small...like
hersey's kisses and hugs wrapped in toole
'Hugs and Kisses from the new Mr. and Mrs'
