Does anyone own a Kirby? Do you want to hear a funny story?

Let me tell you about the day I had on Friday.
First of all it snowed-so I didn't have to go to my office-that was good. Rich tried to go to work but had to turn around because the trailer he pulls behind his truck was sliding all over. Brian had no school. Nicole had no school. Rich's Mom got on a plane in West Palm Beach @ 7am to come up here-we didn't know what would happen with her flight.
Around noon Rich left to go to Lynbrook to pick up Nicole(from her Moms house & pick up his Mom from his sisters-MIL made it here ok). I have about ten million things that I plan to do around the house on my extra day off. Rich is gone about ten minutes & my doorbell rings, Brian answers it & it's a young man with a bottle of laundry soap. I go to the door & he says'this is a free gift for you-do you have 5 minutes?' So I think he's doing a survey or something & I'm like okay. He runs down my driveway & comes back with 3 big boxes.
It freezing out & still snowing, I see he has an ID tag that says Kirby-my son who looks like an adult football player is right next to me, so I let the guy in my foyer.(VERY DUMB-I KNOW!) He starts unpacking these boxes & I say to him'look, I have a million things to do-you have to do this in 10 minutes or less or you gotta go' So he starts his demonstration-he hands me a bunch a literature & has fifty different attachments he's showing. Anyway I let him stay about 30 minutes-I must admit I was totally impressed with this vacuum.
Finally I say to him
'just tell me what it costs & i'll let you know if I'm buying it'
He adds up what all the different things are worth-blah,blah,blah....
He says but you could have this Kirby for
$2,100!!!!!! Then he says would you buy it for $1500?
I was like Ok pack it up-you have to go. So now he says 'can I just call my manager, she's down the block-I need to show her that I really did the demo or I don't get paid' So I feel bad & say ok.
I tell my son to sit in the living room & watch him as I go to finish the laundry that I started.
I go into my laundry room & guess what?????
My friggin washer was broken-fill with wet clothes & it wouldn't spin.
Now I'm really ****ed-Rich will be back in like an hour w/ my MIL & I haven't gotten a thing done!
I start calling repair men-I get one to say he'll come over now.
The Kirby guys manager comes-she's about 22 & starts to give me the hard sell.
I said thank you & get the h-e-l-l out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My sons goes out-I hop in the shower, the appliance guy rings the doorbell while I'm in my robe. I go in my room to change, come out & tell the nice older man repair guy my tale of woe & he starts yelling at me for letting the kirby guy in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OMG!!!!!
Then he tells me that my fifteen year old washer needs a new transmission!!!!!!!
I decide thats nuts I'll just get a new one & I write him a check-as he's leaving Rich gets home with the gang. I was absolutely exhausted! Rich gives me two minutes of crap for letting the guy in & my MIL tells me she had a Kirby that lasted 45 years-she paid $200 back then.
Anyway Rich & I run out to PC Richard & get a new washer with a little dent-usually $459 marked down to $269!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yippeee! We put it in the back of the truck & brought it home.
But anyway now I can't stop thinking that i need that vacuum-does anybody have one & if so where did you get & what do you love about it?

Re: Does anyone own a Kirby? Do you want to hear a funny story?

My mom had one when we were growing up. I hated it. It was heavy and not very effective. JMO.

Maybe it was because I was a teenager and vacuuming was my chore. Either way, my mom looked into another one when hers died and they wanted some outrageous amount of money - over $1000.

Incidentally, she had all those attachments and never used them!!!

Good luck!!

I could never spend $2100 for a vacuum cleaner unless the salesperson came to my house 2 times a week to vacuum for me

You are soooo funny Kelly. I can't imagine needing a Kirby (which I had never heard of until now)...my $100 vacuum gets dragged out once a week and sometimes I wish it would get out of the closet on its own!! LOL...

Re: Does anyone own a Kirby? Do you want to hear a funny story?

I know people who own Kirby and LOVE them- but they are very heavy vacums. The thing ****s up the dirt UNDER your floor boards , well not really but the stuff it picks up is amazing. I don't own one, but I think if I invested a lot of money in really nice carpets I would get one.

Re: Does anyone own a Kirby? Do you want to hear a funny story?

Kelly...that is too funny!!

But regarding the Kirby....my mom had one years ago (she switch to Electrolux and loves them)...they are really good machines, last along time, and it seems that they are worth the price. I have heard that they are very heavy and a little clumbsy.

My sister just bought an Electrolux. It cost $1000 and that was with a $200 rebate for turning in thier old vacuum.

I am looking into buying one and I actually found some really good deals on Ebay.

My mom had one and loved it! She kept it even though she has a newer lighter one - but it 'isn't the same as the good 'ol Kirby'

Re: Does anyone own a Kirby? Do you want to hear a funny story?

I have to vote in favor of Electrolux too - I had my grandmothers and it was over 20 years old when it wore out. They are expensive - I think I spent about $800 (actually $600 after the credit on my old one) but I really does a great job cleaning and it's so easy to change the bags even hubby can do it.

Re: Does anyone own a Kirby? Do you want to hear a funny story?

I don't know about a Kirby (there should be a 'tsk tsk' emoticon that I could use for you letting the Kirby guy into your house!!-I didn't know people did door-to-door sales anymore) but I have an Electrolux and I love it.

Glad you got a great deal on the washer. I love a bargain like that.

Re: Does anyone own a Kirby? Do you want to hear a funny story?

We had central vacuum system in my house when I was a kid, but my Mom had an electrolux too & my stepdad used it to clean his car. One time he ran it over & it still worked!!!!!!
This kirby did so many things though.....it was cool. I know I'm a loon.
