Ball gown, or fitted?

I went dress shopping for the first time the other day and tried on both. I felt like 'myself' in the fitted dress, but the Ballgown was more 'I'm the bride'.

I am afraid that the bigger style will be hard to dance in, and the fitted one is not enough. Did anyone else feel this way? unfortunatly, I like extremes.

Re: Ball gown, or fitted?

what about something more along the lines of an a-line they can be full but not as full as the ball gown - or straighter but not as straight depending on what you are looking for.

but I would say Ball gown - I tend to think they are more bride like then some of the sheaths - which make me think second marriage JMO

Re: Ball gown, or fitted?

My daughter tried on every style available and she said she only felt like a bride in a ball gown. Other styles can be worn at other occasions, but she said she will never ever get another chance to wear a ball gown.
Try them all on for yourself and you will decide what is perfect for you.

Good Luck

Thanks!

Re: Ball gown, or fitted?

Personally, I like fitted gowns - I want to feel & look like me - sexy, sophisticated...not 'like a bride' or 'a princess' - cause that isn't me. If it were up to my step-mom, I'd be in a heavily beaded, princess-y ballgown.

I didn't like the weight and width of the ballgowns...I didn't like how poofy they were when I sat down or move around the store. But I'm a small girl - so maybe that's just me.

Re: Ball gown, or fitted?

LImom, Thanks for the reply. I am keeping an open mind. I just don't know if the ball gown is comfortable, especially dancing. Am I going to be thinking, 'Hey, don't step on the dress, stay back 5 feet?'

Re: Ball gown, or fitted?

See, now that's how I felt. I felt sexy in the fitted, and childish in the ballgown. I don't want to look princessy.

edited to say that I felt like I was playing dress-up. Does this feeling pass? I really want to look like a bride.

Re: Ball gown, or fitted?

I didn't like the ballgown style. Its beautiful but not me - too much dress. I had an A-line and felt every inch the bride.

Re: Ball gown, or fitted?

LisaT, I will start trying the a-lines, I think that may be best.

Jenn, Your gown looked great on you, and it has a very light look to it. Was it heavy at all?

Re: Ball gown, or fitted?

I have the ballgown and I made sure when I tried it on that I could dance in it. Raising my arms and such. I love it. Whatever you feel comfortable in.

Re: Ball gown, or fitted?

A-lines are definetly a beautiful in-between of the two. And most any dress can be modified - remove crinolin or slips to have it lay closer (more fitted) but not as 'slinky' as a sheath or mermaid.

Re: Ball gown, or fitted?

My gown was heavy a little only because I had alot of beading on it, which made it heavy.

Get whatever you think you will love.

I was very comfortable in my dress & Thanks for the compliment

Re: Ball gown, or fitted?

I had the same problem. I tried on all ball gowns and I didn't feel comfortable in any of them. I'm a pretty simple girl. I tried on a fitted dress in beaded lace. It has a slight aline, and even though it doesn't SCRREAM bride, I think it is perfect for dancing (I know I won't stop) and it is very Me. I am getting a detachable train and a long veil for the church though. These details can't help but scream bride. What ever you are most comfortable in is your best choice b/c that is the one you will wear well. Now all I need to worry about is my figure. hee hee Good Luck. Watters and Watters has some great fitted dresses.

Re: Ball gown, or fitted?

I wore a ballgown also and it was light and airy...and a breeze to dance in!

The light and airy part however, comes from the fact that it was organza...and I had a fully detachable train. Other materials are heavier, and a train adds a lot of weight.

Re: Ball gown, or fitted?

I felt the same way you did. Most of my friends expected me to get some sexy tight dress. But I ended up with a pricess gown. Not too big.

THe one thing I made sure of with all the dresses I tried on was -If I can dance in them or not!!!

Good Luck!!

Re: Ball gown, or fitted?

I like all styles of wedding gowns. And I had found a dress in each style that I loved. The only reason I went with ballgown is because it was the only time I could ever wear such a gown and look beautiful instead of silly! It made me feel soooo glamorous, bridal and very classic.

Re: Ball gown, or fitted?

I say whichever you feel most beautiful in and whichever fits your wedding style-everything ends up revolving around the location and the dress.

I loved a fitted satin sheath that I saw, and FH drooled over it, but I felt that a chiffon a-line gown fit my daytime garden wedding better, and I found one I felt just as beautiful in.
