Ceremony music question for the newlyweds

For those of you that married at a church...did you meet with the music director to discuss music options for the ceremony. I called to set up an appointment with mine and she just rattled off names of stuff over the phone and wanted me to pick...she said it wasn't necessary to meet. I never even heard of the songs she said..except ave maria. She recommended a song called one hand one heart....did you ever hear of it. Do you have any other suggestions. I feel like that whole conversation was so rushed.

Re: Ceremony music question for the newlyweds

One Hand One Heart is very pretty. We used 'Grow Old With Me' by John Lennon. It was soooooooooooooo beautiful!! I cried like a baby during it!! We didn't have our wedding in the church, but our music was done by a family friend who is the choir director at DH's church. He hosts a music night twice a year...did you ask if they have something like that?

Re: Ceremony music question for the newlyweds

Jennbaby....did you have to pick from his list of songs? Did you have a full mass or just the ceremony. ? How many songs did you have to pick? I wonder if they will sing 'the prayer'

Re: Ceremony music question for the newlyweds

I hired Janet King- the harpist and a vocalist for my Church. My ceremony was very important to me and I wanted some specific songs to be played. Janet and our vocalist (I forget her name, but she was excellent) both sang or played the songs for me over the phone. I didn't just pick out a song based on the title. I also had my own requests such as How Beautiful, which they both learned for my ceremony.
The Prayer is a beautiful song, but not an easy song to sing. Not all churches have the vocal talent to pull that song off. I would want to hear them sing it first IMO.
I know the song the women recommended. It is played at many weddings.
Misty- that is my wedding song! our band played the Mary Chapin Carpenter version for our first dance. everytime I hear that song I fall in love all over again. It has so much meaning and still does.

Re: Ceremony music question for the newlyweds

I met with the music director from my church and gave him an idea of the mood I wanted to create. He then suggested some songs, and played and sang pieces of them for me.
For me, it was very important that I had piano music, and a lot of traditional songs don't work well on the piano.

I ended up with
Grow Old With me
and The Irish Wedding Song
as my guests were being seated,

Ave Maria for the seating of our moms

Ode to Joy for the bridal party's processional

Cannon in D Major for me and my dad

I can't remember the names of the other songs off hand... it's been 2 years!
Sorry!

Re: Ceremony music question for the newlyweds

well I am definitely calling that woman back......she said that they would do a trumpet march for the bridal party then the bridal march fro me and dad......then some resposoroial psalm after a reading.....then one song...then the traditional recessional when we walk out. Does that sound right....or to little? Are they supposed to play music when the guests are being seated?

Re: Ceremony music question for the newlyweds

I would definitely call her back and ask to meet with her. What if you don't want to walk down to the traditional stuff? Lots of brides walk down to different things, not just the traditional wedding march.

The church where we were married did a music night after our Pre-Cana mass so we could all hear what the songs sounded like. We didn't use any church musicians so we didn't have to worry about meeting with the director.

'One Hand, One Heart' is from West Side Story, so you can try searching for a clip from that. It is a very beautiful song.
