Changing your ring from yellow to white gold?

Is it possible to have your ring dipped from yellow to white gold or platinum? Its a half eternity ring. Any idea on the cost?

My engagement ring was basically destroyed (I crushed my hand, ring bent and I lost 2/3 diamonds.. couldnt find them) so Anthony is going to get me another one If I can get my wedding ring dipped Im going to ask him to get me a white gold or platinum ring.

TIA!

not true--you do not have to dip it every 4 months. depending on your skin acidity, certain people's body chemistry wears away the white gold coating. if that happens, you can get it dipped every year or so. a place in roosevelt field charges $48.

my skin acidity apparently doesn't affect my ring. i've had my ering 2 years and it looks just as white as when i got it. so you may never have to get it dipped at all!

What is 'getting your ring dipped'? I've never heard of this?

I have a white gold e-ring and grant it, it is not as shiny as when I first got it but it doesn't look like a yellow gold ring? Can someone fill me in on this ring dipping thing?

Re: Changing your ring from yellow to white gold?

I had another ring (not ering) dipped to change it from yellow to white gold... thye did a fantastic job and it was 8 bucks( *fFH's family jewler where he got my ering)
id think if its channel set or other tiny stones should prolly cost more but not much more...
i love it, so far its been 6 months still looks great as the day they dipped it

my ering is white gold and i have acidic hands so it gets a tiny bit yellow but its eailys fixable with a dip

Re: Changing your ring from yellow to white gold?

The place I go charges $35.00 if you would like the ring polished and $35.00 to rhodium.

If you take your rings off before you go to bed and put them on after you get ready in the morning it should last longer then if you don't

Re: Changing your ring from yellow to white gold?

platinum is a little more exspensive, but it never has to be re-dipped. just a thought -- but I would think the costs of getting the ring dipped add up if it needs to be re-done every so often. it sounds like platinum may be a better option in the end.

Re: Changing your ring from yellow to white gold?

Earrings, pendants and basically anything not a ring only need to be dipped once and its fine. Rings get so much wear and tear you will have to go back a few times a year. Maybe check out getting a new setting instead? Not sure what you're looking to spend. The fact that it's half eternity wouldn't be a problem to dip.

Re: Changing your ring from yellow to white gold?

The only part of my white gold ering that is slightly tarnished is the underside and that's b/c I stupidly asked a jeweler to buff out some scratches... I may try the dipping for that. I have scratches all over this poor ring... it's so beautiful, I'm just so rough on it...

there is no such thing as white gold. white gold is regular gold dipped in rhodium(sp?). so eventually, if you have a white gold ring, the rhodium wears away, and you can have it redipped.

they dont take the stones out, the rhodium wont adhere to the diamond.

FSIL was going to do this, but decided against it.

Re: Changing your ring from yellow to white gold?

You can change yellow gold into white gold without a problem. I had a yellow gold necklace with diamonds in it and I really wanted it to be white gold, so FH brought it to the jeweler and they rhodium plated it which is just a white gold plating over the yellow gold. It came out beautifully and it still looks good as new. As far as the rings go, I have a white gold e-ring and the only part that looks yellowed is the bottom of the ring because it gets the most abuse (I've had it for a year and 3 months without having it dipped). It should be fine!

Re: Changing your ring from yellow to white gold?

The acidity of your skin is not the only issue. If you wear your rings together you may notice that they turn back to yellow in the spots where they rub against each other. I am having my charm bracelet dipped again because 2 of my charms rub against each other as part of the design and they have turned back in those spots. My opinion is that platinum is almost always worth the extra expense, especially if you know that you will not change the setting again for a long time. If you think you might want a style change at some point within the next 10 years, then go with white or yellow gold.

Re: Changing your ring from yellow to white gold?

I have a white gold e-ring and have had it since July... it looks ok on its own, but when I put my wedding band on (also white gold) you can definately tell the e-ring has turned a bit yellowish... like i said, its not toooo noticable on its own, but next to a brand new white gold ring it is.

I had it dipped once right before the wedding so it would be like the wedding band with no scratched- he buffed them out, I did not actually have to have it done... and it was free and it always will be, it was the same guy we got the ring from, maybe he won't charge you???

I've had my white gold e-ring since last August and it still looks good as new. But dipping before the wedding sounds like a good idea.

Re: Changing your ring from yellow to white gold?

My Future SIL and I were talking about this this past weekend. her ring is platnum with like gold near the diamonds- she got married 10 years ago and this was a very popular look then. She was considering having hers dipped and looked into doing it. She said you then have to have it done every few years cus it wears off and when it wears off the regualr gold doesn't look right. So she said it can be a hassle.

Re: Changing your ring from yellow to white gold?

We chose platinum rings (w/o knowing that white gold needed almost annual redipping), and now I'm really happy we did!

I already have a giant pile of watches and jewelry that's been waiting for 'repair' for over a year.... not diciplined enough to run errands like that
