Flowers during Lent?

I made the mistake of asking the liturgist at church whether the church allowed us to throw rose petals at the ceremony. Not only did she say no rose petals but she said that we couldn't have flowers at all or even bows on the pews because Lent is a somber time of year. After she left, the deacon said that if I really wanted to have flowers, he felt I should go for it anyway but now I feel like since I asked and was told 'no' it doesn't look right to disobey. It is actually a pretty church so I am not sure if it is even an issue. Do you girls think that the church would look bare without flowers?

Re: Flowers during Lent?

Yeah the majority of the churches are strict with the Rose petal thing - All year round. It depends how important the flowers and bows are to you.. will you be ok with just the church the way it is. As for me personally I am not decorating the church, and my church looks like a simple old school chapel. I think it looks perfect like that.

Im sure it will look great with out the flowers and bows.. but also find out if the crosses will be covered during your ceremony or if your chruch does that. I knwo ym church coves all the crosses and statues with the purple cloth during lent.

Re: Flowers during Lent?

We are not going to put any flowers in our church, but I know that the church will be decorated with flowers to begin with. did they say whether or not they will have flowers there? My church has flowers all over year round, I would definitely find out, then maybe it will save you money in the end. We chose not to add flowers b/c we didnt want to take away from the beauty of the church.

Re: Flowers during Lent?

I know most churches don't allow flowers because of lent, which is why I didn't even consider that time of the year. Personally I think it would be disrespectful to have flowers since it is lent and especially since you were told your weren't allowed to.

Re: Flowers during Lent?

I agree with you about that. The church is beautiful anyway; I just wanted to hear other opinions.

Re: Flowers during Lent?

We got married right after christmas, and the church was still decorated so we did very little. we only put pew bows on the rows for family, and had only 2 very small stands next to the altar. To me the church had enough of its own decor that we did not need anything.

Re: Flowers during Lent?

My friend got married after Easter ( few weeks later) and his church's tradition was to keep the flowers like 8 weeks out. So, yup, they were as dead as dead could be. His fiance was beyond hysterical when they asked the priest if they could take them down and he said 'what do you think, this is some broadway production? If you don't like it, get married somewhere else'.

They ended up having the photographer remove them from the church pictures.....I felt terrible.

Re: Flowers during Lent?

When FH and I met with our priest, he actually looked at the calendar to see if our date falls during Lent. (It is the last weekend before Lent!) If it had fallen during Lent, he requested that we NOT do flowers.

I think you should be fine...the church is probably beautiful on its own and you'll be saving money on not having to get flowers for the church. I would go with their request to not decorate.
