Good luck items when moving into a house

Does anyone know the items that are supposed to be brought into a new home for good luck? I thought it was sugar, flour and not too sure what else.

Re: Good luck items when moving into a house

I think a loaf of bread...symbolizing that there will always be food on your table

Also, my Mom always says that it's bad luck to bring an old mop and broom to a new house (don't know her reason).

Re: Good luck items when moving into a house

My neighbors are Jewish and they gave us a bag with milk, sugar, bread, flour and some other stuff when we moved in. They called it the Jewish Welcome Wagon. I never heard of it before but they did it for everyone on the block! It was soooo sweet of them!

An elephant with its tusk upwards is very good luck. An upside horseshoe is very good luck.
Some religious people bring holy water into their home.

Bread: That this house may never know hunger.

Salt: That life may always have flavor.

Wine: That joy and prosperity may reign forever.

Re: Good luck items when moving into a house

I agree with the elephant with the tusk up and the upside horseshoe. I also heard that the first Xmas card you receive in a season should be taped above your front door and it will bring luck all year.

I also heard something about naming the walls of your bedroom on the first night you sleep there.

Re: Good luck items when moving into a house

I found this:

'The bread and salt tradition comes from an old Russian folk custom. Back in the day, when the emperor and empress would pay a village a visit, merchants and gentry would present their esteemed guests with a round loaf of bread piled with salt, a sign of hospitality. Peasants were honored using a similar ceremony upon being introduced to the village with their new spouse, with the gift of bread and salt signifying that the new couple would always have the necessities of life. When given at housewarmings, therefore, bread and salt represent the giver’s wish that the recipient’s pantry will always be full. Sugar, on the other hand, symbolizes the hope for a sweet life.'

Throw money (change) in all the rooms....it will bring you wealth and happiness ...at least that is what my grandparents used to tell me.
