Another kitchen question: does your countertop and backsplash meet at the counter or on the wall?

I can get a granite countertop with a 4 inch backsplash and then have my tiled backsplash start from there - OR - I can have the backsplash be a flat slab and have the tiles start from there.

Anyone have any suggestions or photos to show me??

Stef since you say your kitchen is small, I might be wrong but I think a full backsplash might make it look a bit bigger (not as closed it). We put our tumble marble as a full back splash starting from the countertop.

So you dont have a countertop backsplash and then the tiles - correct?

Do you have any problems of that seam getting dirty or liquid spilling behidn teh cabinet?

Yes I have no countertop back splash the tiles come all the way down to the countertop. I don't have any problems with liquad spilling or anything, but it is chaulked off, don't know how they do it with granite. Did they tell you if they chaulk it or how they seal it off? We got chaulk the same color as our tiles so you don't notice it at all.

I think the caulk is used for granite too..im just not too keen on the idea of having to recaulk on a regular basis. Plus, if im using the flat counter to make it look streamlined, im worried the caulk will not look very streamlined.

Re: Another kitchen question: does your countertop and backsplash meet at the counter or on the wall?

knew i spelled that would wrong...LOL. If it is all granite they are doing it in one piece? Then if the tile goes on top they don't caulk that they just make it meet? About the caulk you can't even see mine. They make them in so many different colors they blend in real good. Yes though it will have to be recaulked sometimes, but mine in my last place ...gosh must have lasted 10 years or more!

Stef, I am sure you are better at this then me, I was looking for your other email about the tiles. I posted a picture on there that you might be able to see. If you can't find it or can't see the countertop and tiles together let me know and I will take a digital for you later.

Re: Another kitchen question: does your countertop and backsplash meet at the counter or on the wall?

Thanks cooky...found your photos and it looks good that way of course. I just cant imagine how difficult its going to be to clean. where the granite meets the cooper. Since you have ceramic tiles, the grout/caulk might be easier to match for you. I am seriously so confused on this issue.

I saw all the other photos posted in my backsplash thread and almost all of them have no granite "lip" so I guess its probably looks bettter that way. Im just concerned about how it holds up and how it looks up close.

Anyone else have photos/opinions/suggestions?

I like when the counter top comes up 4 inches and then the tile backsplash starts.

No, I wish I did. My friend just got it done in her new house and it looks fabulous. I'm not sure of your time frame, but I will be at her house this weekend. I can send you a picture on Monday.

Let me know

Stef, what color did you decide on the Granite? Yes the cooper might be hard to match but maybe there is something close to the granite. The people putting in the granite, what did they suggust? They might know more if they have a color to match it or are they leaving the caulking up to you?

Re: Another kitchen question: does your countertop and backsplash meet at the counter or on the wall?

We havent decided on the exact color but it will probably be a tan/brown combination.

The granite is the last thing that gets put into the kitchen so the granite people dont even see the kitchen until everything is finished. Our tiles are special order so i need to know how much to order. They are pretty expensive and are priced per tile so I would rather not have to buy more than Im going to need.

As far as what the contractor thinks - he said its a matter of preference.

Well if you do decide to caulk it there are a few caulks around that color tan/brown. We got a brownish one from home depot buy the floor tile section. Did you tear down your wall yet? Let us know if you found brick! I am got my fingers crossed for you!

Re: Another kitchen question: does your countertop and backsplash meet at the counter or on the wall?

I guess they must have some caulk that matches. The must for the sealing.

Not tearing down yet. I wotn find out until everything is in (cabinets will take several weeks to even be finished) and the contractor is ready to start.

Re: Another kitchen question: does your countertop and backsplash meet at the counter or on the wall?

Stef, just FYI....they do make a clear silicone caulk, so that you do not have to stress out over the color matching...

We plan to have our tile backsplash come all the way down to meet the countertop, and we will seal it with the clear silicone caulk.
