Re: Social Security Question
On a form that I printed out it asked for your parent's SS#. What if you don't have your old SS Card?

Re: Social Security Question
I changed by SS card in the mail- SS numbers for your parents are only required if you are applying for a SS number for the fist time. If you have an existing SS number, you only need to reference yours. I sent in a certified copy of my marriage license and they sent me a new card with my marriage license back in the mail within weeks. It was really fast!
ps- you don't need to to send in your old card.

Re: Social Security Question
I can go in person because I have a SS office in my neighborhood. but it's good to know that they accept certified copies of your marriage license.
Did you change your passport yet? if so then did you have to mail in your original marrige license?

Re: Social Security Question
I haven't changed my passport yet but the on-line instruction forms only say that you have to fill out a form, send your old passport (even if it's expired) in with a certified copy of your marriage license and 2 new photos and you will receive a new one in the mail,

Re: Social Security Question
Certified Copy meaning the original? Because that's what they want.

Re: Social Security Question
you can get a certified copy by contacting your town hall that issued the certificate.
Changing my SS was a piece of cake - just went to the fooice with my old card and marriage certificate. Took only a few minutes.

Re: Social Security Question
I just did this today.
You do not need to fill in your parents ss#'s- leave it blank.
Go to the ss office with your completed form, bring your drivers license and your marriage license. That's it!
The lady said doing it by mail is more difficult.

Re: Social Security Question
actually, i just got back from the SS office in freeport. and all i needed was my driver's license and my old SS card. but on the form to fill out (get it on line and fill out before you go - it saves time) you do need your mom and dad's social. all and all i was back to work in an hour. and should have the new card in 2 weeks and then the fun of the change at DMV and the bank

Re: Social Security Question
oh and i also needed my marriage certificate.
advice - better to go there in person. i was scared to send my "good copies" of my license and marriage certificate. and the freaks you see on line there -TOTALLY WORTH IT :)

Re: Social Security Question
I'm positive that you don't need your parents' SS#...at first I thought you did from the form and called my mom freaking out...she didn't know my dad's off hand and we couldn't get in touch with him...then I saw it is only for first time appliers
see page 1 #8B and #9B

You do not need your parents ss#'s or your old ss card. I didn't have mine with me and she didn't ask for it.

Re: Social Security Question
Do you really need your driver's license? I misplaced mine a couple of months ago (I haven't driven in about 5 years) but I do have a passport. Now that the New Year is here, I have to start working on changing my name.

Re: Social Security Question
you only need a state or fed id with your old name and something with your new name
so birth cert....passport...license...military ID...etc will do for the old
marriage license (or new driver's license - if you go to DMV first) will do for new
also you can still hyphenate when you get there (maybe my woman was extra nice, but it seems like you can put whatever you want...DH was able to drop his middle initial)
