Spinoff on living with parents to save money for a house...

I currently own a condo in NJ. I bought it myself before I met FH. I was VERY expensive in my opinion...but I just didn't want to rent anymore. It's 2 BR so we have room for now...but we want to start a family. My fear is that I won't be able to afford a house when I sell the condo...I live in NJ because I work here...my family is on LI (about 1 hour 15 minutes with no traffic). I am close with them so I don't know if I could move out of the area...but housing costs are just so ridiculous. I just came back from a business trip in Florida...it's so nice there...housing in way cheaper...gets me thinking as to what is more important? Being close to family (especially when we have kids) and struggling...or living far away and comfortable? Your thoughts....

I've been struggling with that thought for over a year.. wow...
someday we may move out of NY.. but we can't bear to leave family now. We want to be close.. and when kids come around.. then maybe we make the move.. it's so tough though.. a very tough decision.

We have thought about that as well. However I am an only child and want to stay as close to parents as possible for as long as possible. My parents are in Brooklyn and so am I. They aren't moving any time soon so I doubt very highly when we do buy a house that we will be out of LI or NJ. FH's parents are in LI and his sister and her family are in LI.

I struggle with this every day!! I'm one of those people who believes your family is everything--and then I go and fall for a guy from another continent!! We're moving to London after the wedding, but with the understanding that we will come back to New York in a few years. It breaks my heart thinking about leaving my family...

honestly...I love my family but in the same respect, both FH and I grew up in families that struggled and we do not want that for our family. We took our frist major vacation as a road trip to see friends and ended up in Georgia to stay with FH sister and her family. They moved down there 3 years ago to make a better life for themselves. We looked at houses, fell in love with the area and lifestyle, and on the ride home started talking in terms of our life together and realized we wanted to get married. We both want me to stay home when we have kids. We can't do that in NY, not now, and maybe not in the future. When we discussed it with my father, he gave us his blessing and said to go live our lives, and live them fully. He wants us to have the nice house, the reliable cars, and to be able to give our kids what they need and sometimes want. Hope that sheds SOME light to what we feel is the answer to this growing problem in NY.....Good Luck with whatever you decide
