UPDATE: I GOT A DEMO LESSON !!!! AHHHH!!!!!commonly asked teacher interview questions?

I have an interview tomorrow afternoon for a September 2005 position.

I am secondary math. I was wondering if anyone knew commonly asked questions, other than:

why did you become a teacher, tell us about yourself, why this district?

Any others would be very helpful and wish me luck !!!!

Re: commonly asked teacher interview questions?

One that totally made me blink the first time I heard it: "Why should we hire you and not the 10/15/20 etc. people we are interviewing?"

Boo hiss on that one!

Re: commonly asked teacher interview questions?

I teach secondary english. Here are some that i was asked:

1)Explain how you would prepare students for state exam

2) What reasons would you call home to speak to a parent? (make sure you would call if work improves..sounds obvious but a lot of people say if work is declining, bad behavior etc...)

Most of the other questions were english related. If i think of any others i will let you know.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Re: commonly asked teacher interview questions?

why did you choose this profession?

if you could pick any grade, which one? (hint, they all something unique to offer)

how do you get through to those kids who hate math or just don't understand math?

Re: commonly asked teacher interview questions?

what was your best/worst lesson ever?

how do you deal with behavioural problems?

what do you do when a lesson fails?

why would you want to teach elementary/middle/high school?

Re: commonly asked teacher interview questions?

What would you do if two students (or more) got into a fight in the hallway outside your classroom or in your classroom?

Describe a lesson you have recently taught..

How would you prepare your students for state tests?

Re: commonly asked teacher interview questions?

ladies thanks for all of your help.

Another question for you though,

as far as prepping students for state exams, what is a solid answer there? As I have not prepped anyone for these exams, I wouldn't exactly know a solid strategy yet.

PLEASE HELP SOME MORE !!!

Re: commonly asked teacher interview questions?

what grades are you looking at teaching?

i know when i prep for state exams, i make sure that it is not directly in the form of those exams...so that it can be seen as "teaching to the test"
I figure out the skills the test is testing them on, and teach the students those skills....within the curriculum of the school. that way they don't know they're being taught for a state exam, btu they're still learning important skills

Re: commonly asked teacher interview questions?

They always ask "what is your worst/best lesson"

Describe a discipline problem you had and how you dealt with it."

"What kind of technology do you implement in the classroom?"

"How do would you deal with students who are unmotivated"

"Do you give homework everyday"

I was once asked "IF you have a first period class, what is going to get the students to school on time, in other words what will make your class so great that they want to be there?"

As far as the NYS standards, I would research the standards for your subject so you are familiar with them . Your lesson plans will include which standard you are addressing and any activity you do will focus on that standard.
I also think they really like to hear that you are willing to ask veteran teachers for opinions/help.

Hope this helps, good luck!

palebride,

It(the ad in the paper) just said secondary math. I don't know if it is middle school or high school. I would love to teach either.

If its a middle school job, you'll be preparing them for the 8th grade assessment. If its HS, you'll be preparing them for the regents. I have taught both MS and HS, its not all that different. They also might have you teach at both the HS and MS, you'd have to travel from one to the other.

How would you deal with students at different learning levels in your classroom?

What books are you currently reading?

Describe a typical lesson.

Many of these already have been said, but here's a link to commonly asked questions (I'm interviewing in 2 weeks, so I looked them up). Teacher Interview Questions

My friends have also gotten some questions on NCLB, so be prepared for those

Good luck!

Re: UPDATE: I GOT A DEMO LESSON !!!! AHHHH!!!!!commonly asked teacher interview questions?

Call the teacher and find out what the class will be doing. Also the teacher can usually tell you what the district likes to see. I would try to incorporate some kind of cooperative learning. Get name tags for the kids (have them put a card in the front of the desk- you can do that as a "do now") that way you will know their names when you call on them instead of saying "you in the blue shirt." The number one piece of advice, RELAX! I know its hard, but you have to try. The more comfortable you are, the smoother everything will go. OH! And its better to overplan than underplan, but make sure your lesson has a conclusion!
Good luck!

you'll do great - they asked you to come in for a demo lesson for a reason....
so now it's up to you to show them how great you are!

Re: UPDATE: I GOT A DEMO LESSON !!!! AHHHH!!!!!commonly asked teacher interview questions?

Thanks so much ladies.

Besides the students that are in the classroom, how many adults can I expect to be in the room? And who would they be?

When they called they said they would be focused on the way I present the material and my pacing.

Any of you happen to be math teachers that can help me a bit?

Re: UPDATE: I GOT A DEMO LESSON !!!! AHHHH!!!!!commonly asked teacher interview questions?

It depends, I've seen the number of people in the room vary.. sometimes just the department chair, sometimes the chair, the principal, the assoc. superintendent.

The kids usually won't be very responsive because they have no idea who you are, thats what I have found. I think by pacing they mean you don't go to fast - make sure you have appropriate wait time for questions, etc.

I teach science, so I can't help you with the math stuff. DId you find out if it was a middle or high school job?

The demo lesson is in Math A, so that could lend itself to middle school or high school.

I would bring index cards and markers for the students to write their names. that way you can call their name instead of "you in the red shirt"

Remember to smile!!!!
When you are teaching everything will run pretty smooth. My best advice is to NOT look at the adults in the room. It can throw you off. Observers tend to not always have the most pleasant faces on even if they like what you are doing.

If you love teaching, you will be great!!!!!
Best of Luck!!!!
