Att: teachers - student teaching questions...

Girls, please share your student teaching experiences...were you kind of thrown in there and ran the class or were you more of a para with doing a lesson a day.

thanks.....

Re: Att: teachers - student teaching questions...

I started out going over parts of assignments with them for like 2 days and then I took over.

Honestly.. you need to run the class yourself.. and even still.. it is nothing like having your own classroom.

Re: Att: teachers - student teaching questions...

It depends on the teacher - I had one teacher who threw me in immediately but always gave me the support I needed, and I loved the experience and grew from it - then I had a witch who resented having me in her class and turned me into the assistant who made copies - obviously I hated it and counted down the days!

Are you just starting? If so, good luck.

I "observed" for a bit, then did my own lessons. I appreciated the (brief) transition. My worst fear was walking in my 1st day and my co-op teacher saying-"go, teach!"

Re: Att: teachers - student teaching questions...

Well I had mono UGH and was required to assist in coaching the boys varsity swim team right away and Day two or three I took over teaching the classes. They told me the unit and that was it. I had to right up the lessons myself. The cooperating teachers rarely even stayed in the room! It was so nerve racking at first but after a week I was comfortable. I also felt better when the teacher wasnt there because I could be myself with the kids. I had to write up every lesson and mail it in at the end of every week. I hope that helped. Good Luck!

Re: Att: teachers - student teaching questions...

with both of the teachers i worked with, they allowed me to observe for a week and then i took over all of the classes after that. i met with the teachers daily to work over lessons and to grade all of the papers. I did all of the work, but they were there for support.
it was a wonderful experience!

Re: Att: teachers - student teaching questions...

My experience was pretty intense. I student taught under a teacher who literally had a countdown toward retirement and was planning on taking a sabbatical as well. Needlesstosay, I was thrown in immediately, teaching 5 classes within the first week. I cired all the time, was exhausted, and was completely overwhelmed.

HOWEVER... in hinsight..

It turned out to be the best thing for me. I learned HOW to teach, how to discipline, and how to develop my style. This helped when I moved back to LI and got my teaching job and it made me so confident in the classroom.

MY first job teaching HS went well and I attribute it to my helliush student teaching experience.

PS: It did get better and at the end of the semester, these awful torrid 8th graders threw me a party, bought me a #1 teacher charm, and wrote me letters that I still treasure.

Stick it out, show the kids you care, be TOUGH, and in the long run... it will pay off.

I HATED student teaching, but I love teaching.
FM is you want to chat some more...

for you!

Re: Att: teachers - student teaching questions...

Thanks girls....

This is my thing...I go to grad school on LI...I can have them place me in Nassau..I live in BK..i would rather ST in the city...for the convenience, don't really want to pay for gas, not getting paid etc.

(I am currently a TA on LI, but my school would rather me not ST in my current district, because i did all of my observation hours their)

All of my friends who student taught on LI seam to have had a much more involved experience. My friends who work in the city share a different experience. They basically say that you are more of an observer etc.

I am just trying to figure out what road to take.

Thanks for your help!!!! keep the feedback coming...

Re: Att: teachers - student teaching questions...

When I was student teaching on Staten Island I was basically doing one lesson a day, and assisting the teacher by doing paperwork and helping the kids with their assignments. WIth my one cooperating teacher I felt more like her secretary, it was horrible!!

This experience can either make you or break you. I didn't completely enjoy my time ST and so I never got myself into the profession after graduation. Isn't there another district on LI that you can ST in? I would've much rather been more involved and kind of "taking over" the class, but I never got that opportunity. So I ended up getting turned off to it.

Good luck with your decision!! I hope you love it!!

I student taught in the Bronx and took over the class within the first week. I taught practically every lesson. It was hard work but thats what teaching is so it was good experience. Best of luck to you! Dont sweat it - you will be fine

Re: Att: teachers - student teaching questions...

I basiclly observed and helped out for the first few days, then depending on the teacher I would take over one subject first, and by the end I was doing everything. I didn' t like it that much, I had b*tchy teachers, but I did realize what grades I loved-4th and 5th!
