This is a tough one!

I think I want a TENTED wedding! COME SEE THE PICTURES!

Hey all,

I've been considering this since before I was even engaged! When I think of my dream wedding... I see a HUGE high-ceiling tent w/ side walls, ballroom pillow liners, lanterns, wood flooring, custom lighting and each of my 200 guests dancing the night away

This doesn't seem very common, and since I've found this site, I've been so impressed with the hall idea that I sort of swept my dream under the rug lol! NY Tent Co has some beautiful ones but I don't want to contact them until I have it all together.

So, would any of you helpful ladies (or gentlemen) have any useful advice for me?

I'm wondering:

1: Could I have the tent set up outside of an estate, vineyard or country club?

2: If yes, would they allow outside catering to use their kitchen and our guests to use their restrooms?

3: Would the above perhaps be willing to cater for an outdoor reception on their grounds? I spoke with the Beach Club Estate and they said they could do it but I haven't heard much about them.

4: Lastly, would it cost much more than the average reception hall since I'd have to rent a huge tent with all it's accesories, rent chairs, tables, linens, dinnerware (if the owner of the grounds can't provide them) and also take care of AC for the tent, etc. How much do caterers usually charge for weddings outside of a reception hall?

I'm gonna try to post a picture or 2 of what I'm envisioning

Thanks SOOOoo much for reading all of that if you did and ANY advice you have would be GREATLY appreciated

Thats pretrty - but I'm sure a set up like that would be more expensive than a beautiful hall

I know two people that had tented weddings...the location for both were summer homes on huge property and they were loaded because it was definitely more expensive than having it at a hall.

my friend is have a tent wedding on her own private estate.... it's costing like over $200 a person when she broke down all the catering and rental costs, she even switched the date to avoid paying more for AC... look into Nassau tent if you do though and Fran Zaslow catering (food was only $55 a person)

Re: I think I want a TENTED wedding! COME SEE THE PICTURES!

Oh my goodness!

That'd be $40K for 200 guests... does that $200 include flowers?

She must be renting EVERYTHING since it's her own private estate... Maybe if we have it outside of a country club and use their equipment (tables, chairs and dinnerware) we'd save some $$$!

Thanks a lot for the information though! I'm going to look up that tent company and caterer

:fingers crossed:

Re: I think I want a TENTED wedding! COME SEE THE PICTURES!

One of my friends had a tented wedding at Martha Clara Vineyards. It was very nice, but not my style. I thought it was kinda of annoying wearing heels in the grass. The wood floor only covered the dance floor area, not where the tables were. They also had to rent a bathroon trailer for the restrooms.

Re: I think I want a TENTED wedding! COME SEE THE PICTURES!

Ya I HATE walking in grass! I'm actually not an "outdoorsy" kinda gal lol I just think the tent idea is kinda romantic. I'd definitely have Plywood flooring throughout the whole tent.

I'm surprised that guests weren't able to use the vineyard's restroom...
Thanks a lot for the info

Re: I think I want a TENTED wedding! COME SEE THE PICTURES!

I'm thinking the same thing for my wedding, and I'm looking into having it at an inn or B&B upstate or in New Jersey. There are so many places that do tented weddings there every weekend, so they have packages where you'll get the tent, catering, bar services, linens etc. just like you would at a reception hall, for about the same cost. If I just rented grounds somewhere and had to find everything a la carte by myself, I'd go nuts! Haven't found any places yet in Long Island, though, sorry. If you'd be interested in the places I found in the Hudson Valley or NJ, let me know.

Thanks all! Icherian as you know, I think you created the perfect atmosphere for your wedding! It was SO beautiful!... so if I don't go with the tent... it'll be quite similar with the lanterns and lighting in a hall/ballroom

Jerry's Girl, I'm gonna check out the website

Re: I think I want a TENTED wedding! COME SEE THE PICTURES!

I work for a hospital and we always have a ball in September at the Bourne Mansion in Oakdale. They set up a huge tent - 800 people attend the event- and they use the mansion for the cocktail hour and then the tent for dinner. It is so gorgeous! I always thought I wanted a tent wedding, but they can be expensive, but def check out the Bourne Mansion (Lessings)

Re: I think I want a TENTED wedding! COME SEE THE PICTURES!

I checked their website and it's really nice but their minimum is about $150 per person. I'll still contact them though since they might charge less if we only use the grounds.

I never thought about having the cocktail hour inside and reception outside... great idea!

Thank you

Re: I think I want a TENTED wedding! COME SEE THE PICTURES!

just a few things to think about if you want a tented wedding...

i work for a caterer and we go to sites to do weddings. i've done more than one wedding in a tent, and oddly enough, it has POURED every time i've done a tent wedding. and let me tell you- it's not a pretty sight. the grass gets really soggy and all the women sink their high heels into the ground and get them all muddy. also, one time i did a wedding where it was rainy AND windy and the side panels to the tents were blowing in and all the guests were getting wet. it was terrible. so unless you have nerves of steel and will not be stressed about the weather, i don't recommend it. it can be absolutely gorgeous if you luck out and get a nice day, but if you don't, you're not going to be a happy camper.

Thanks so much for your honest advice. What a horrible visual... the rain, wind and mud
But like I said above, I'd definitely use plywood flooring thoughout... not just for the dancefloor.

Come to think of it... it might even be possible to have the tent company extend the floors to create a path to the estate (or whatever) so that we wouldn't have to worry trekking across the grass.

As far as the wind... from what I've seen on the NY Tent Co's website... the tents suitable for large weddings are wind (and rain) proof. They're SUPER sturdy... some "Navi-Trac System". Were the tents you've seen large? Let me know if so.

But I don't have nerves of steel so we'll see how it all pans out. If I'm not 100% confident in the tent, I won't do it.

I'll let you all know what the result is when I speak with all the different companies.
