Mini Review-floral terrace/starlight express
Hi All....I attended a wonderful wedding this weekend at Floral terrace with DJ starlight express...I thought it would be nice to post a review for you(for those who have booked or are still looking).... I had a wonderful time at this wedding and enjoyed every moment.
Floral Terrace-Beautiful Hall...and only one wedding at a time!!! The coctail hour was amazing...sooooo much food and it was all delicious-especially the penne alla vodka!!! The decor was great and the atmosphere was nice. The reception room was beautiful...love those ceilings....as for the main course, I got the chicken. I was not a fan of mine, but others at my table got the shell steak and really liked it...the dessert was great...there was a great selection of desserts including ice cream, snow cones, cotton candy, chocolate fountain, etc....they were all delicious!!! There was some difficulty with the chocolate fountain because it stopped working midway and the chocolate just dribbled....also they did not serve the cake at the tables. Instead guests had to go up for their pieces. The server butchered the cake while trying to cut it up in front of the guests. Some comments regarding the service:overall the service was good-the servers were very attentive...sometimes too attentive:at the coctail hour, I had my drink taken away twice, even though I was not finished. This also happened with my main course:, a waiter took my dinner away from me while I was still chewing!....the waiter that was assigned to us at our table was great!. He folded my napkin like a hundred times and offered to get us drinks from the bar. Very pleasant!! Overall, the place was beautiful and the wedding was magnificent....
Starlight express-when we entered into the reception room, we were greeted by a percussionist who was amazing.....the dj seemed to play all the right music at all the right times....there was a few things I disliked..mostly about the MC....I was not crazy about him , actually he annoyed me....It was very difficult to understand him because he had the microphone too close to his mouth....also he made an attempt to get people up to the dance floor, however embarrased most people by pointing them out in addition to making unpleasant jokes.....he rushed the ending of the wedding: instead of letting the guests have fun, he gave instructions on how to finish the last two dances and was observed gesturing to cut off the music (with his hands )...I noticed that other guests were not pleased with him at all!!
I hope this helps...I would definitely recommend Floral Terrace...just make sure that they ask the guests if they are done with their meals first.... I'm definitely ambivalent about starlight express...I think that if there would have been another MC, I would have felt different about the company....I think that the persussionist was great and that the DJ was great as well!!

Re: Mini Review-floral terrace/starlight express
I was at the SAME wedding as you!! I'm friends with the bride- Denise! This is freaking me out, I went to a wedding last weekend at Woodbury CC and there was an LIW bride there too!!! we're everywhere!! lol
I agree w/ your comments on Starlight Express....as soon as I got there I knew it was them, b/c FH & I met with them 2 weeks ago (which FH really really liked them, but I'm a little concerned after today). Honestly I do think it was the MC who wasn't so great.....he annoyed me so much today!!!
The MC was REALLY loud, and when he did the 10 second kiss thing I wanted to slap him!! I agree he rushed the end of the wedding, I felt like he should've gotten everyone to get around the bride and groom earlier. And why was he constantly talking?? He must really like to hear himself!!! I thought his mike was turned up too high too.
I think Starlight Express is still a contender for us (love those lighting columns!!), BUT I think I'd go with Vinny, since I've read he's more low key. I've also read really great things about Paul. The MC today.....I don't remember his name but he's of a mid eastern background (not that he has an accent though). The only funny thing he said today was "don't worry I don't smell like curry".....but that could be really offensive to any guests with a mid eastern background.
I agree that the Floral Terrace was great.....the servers were slightly clumsy at times.....spilling water on the table etc. But they were very courteous. I had the shell steak- it was delicious!

BTW- I was at table 11- where were you?
I just realized your getting married at Woodbury CC- I went to a wedding there last weekend- it was one of the best weddings I've been to in a long time!!! their dj was Satisfaction Guaranteed- they were amazing!
One thing I have to say about how they served the pasta at Woodbury- they came out w/ pots and plopped the pasta down in the bowls on the table (instead of bringing out the bowls with the pasta already served in it).....I didn't really care for this b/c a tiny bit of sauce splashed on my arm....not a big deal, but I just thought it was something I'd point out in case you didn't know how they serve the pasta. But, I have to say all the food was EXCELLENT!! I had a chicken dish (forgot the name, it had tomatoes and mozzarella on top w/ a mushroom sauce....soooooooo good!!!!), FH had steak and thought it was great too. If you have any questions about Woodbury...just let me know!!

Now, I am a bit worried....
I used Starlight Express and while I knew who I wanted as my MC ahead of time, I told them that I did not want an MC who will pressure people to get out of their seat. The Bride and Groom have that choice as to what type of MC they want. I wouldn't go too hard Starlight Express cause maybe they wanted someone who was going to get people to dance. I had NO problem what so ever with that because I specifically stated that I didn't want the MC to force anyone on the floor. They followed every request and all of my guests had a blast. As for the whole microphone thing, if he was holding it too close to him mouth, thats totally something that he should have known better than to do.

Did you see Douglaston Manor after the renovations? Just curious. The location was perfect for us b/c I have family upstate and in LI, so it's a good halfway point being in Queens.
It's amazing where you can bump into an LIW bride......it's definitely a good thing that we report back, since a lot of people who book their halls have never actually been there for a party (like me!!).

I really don't think you have to worry.....it's just good that dancerbride & I both noticed this MC was annoying so you can steer clear of him!! I even met him when I went to see Starlight Express, and he was so nice! I'm just glad I saw him in action, so that I can say I absolutely don't want him as our MC. FH really really loves Starlight so despite being discouraged with the MC yesterday we might still book them.....I have faith in Vinny & Paul! I think your in good hands!!

Re: Mini Review-floral terrace/starlight express
I wanted to ask the Starlight brides- did you get the lighting columns? And did you get the screens with zap shots, or just a photo montage?
I loved the lighting columns yesterday....they looked so elegant! They didn't have any screens, but that's something we definitely want (we just have to decide if we want zap shots, or if we just want to do a montage during dinner).

This is what my package consists of:
1 DJ 1 MC 2 50" plasma screen tv's w/concert lights (I believe that they come with the column?) 3 montages photographer for church - reception
I believe we will have either candid shots or zap shots during the entire night from the church to reception put on the screens. They did not state if they would be candid shots or zap shots.
Can you tell me what the difference is?
Thanks.

Hello!!! thanks for sharing! I think they only use the lighting columns actually, b/c Vinny had told me they don't really care for the traditional ones that other dj's use (the ones mounted above the dj booth- they're more like a spotlight)...but I did notice that they also had lighting mounted on top of the columns that they used a few times yesterday- which was nice for the father/daughter dance, first dance etc.....this way you can have both if you choose, other than that I think the column lighting is so nice and its different!
I don't really know if there's a difference in what style of zap shots you can get- I think they just shoot pictures- w/o really posing anyone. I went to a wedding last weekend at Woodbury CC, where they gave a mini recap of the wedding ceremony while we were having dinner- it was so cool!! I thought that was a nice touch for guests who didn't make it to the ceremony- that's something I might ask to have done.

My sister got married on the 20th of Oct. at Floral Terrace and used Starlight Express also. The place was fantastic, the food was incredible, the staff was attentive and friendly. Everything went smoothly!! You guys have nothing to worry about. She had Vinny as her MC and he was great. The music was great.
Congrats Floral terrace brides you made a great choice in catering halls!!!!!
