Changing my name tomorrow... anyone else have mixed feelings? Update... I did it!
I absolutely love my DH. We dated 9 years before we got engaged. I was totally ready to get married and waited a long time. Still... I'm 32 and have mixed feelings about this. Both of my parents are gone and it's like the last tie to them. I am definetely going to take his name but it just seems strange. Don't want to hyphenate. Just wanted to vent.
Just a little sad, saying good-bye to my former self. See you all Friday! Thanks, Deb

Re: Changing my name tomorrow... anyone else have mixed feelings?
I couldn't part with my last name. I am also 32 and it is part of me. I hypenated but have not changed anything yet. We are buying a house and changing my name in the middle of all that would be total chaos for me. Have you considered ADDING your last name as a middle name? I would. That way it is still part of you, especially with your parents gone. Talk to your husband about this. Maybe you should wait a few more weeks. It doesn't hurt anyone to wait. Editted to say; you can love your husband and your own last name at the same time. I do. So don't feel bad about this.

Debbie, I feel you 100% I have not changed one single thing yet You still know who you are. Are you not hyphenating??

Re: Changing my name tomorrow... anyone else have mixed feelings?
Oh, I hear you. I'm 33 & feel the same. But practically speaking I could never hyphenate D********-P*********! Two very long Italian last names ...lots of vowels! Talk about torturing your children. So, change it will be, and I'm glad, but it's bittersweet none-the-less.

Re: Changing my name tomorrow... anyone else have mixed feelings?
I felt the same way, i always thought i would change my name. Then i went to SS and got nervous and the lady there told me to hypenate for now ( i can drop my name anytime i want) so for now i have two last names until i am comfortable with just his ... if i ever am!

Re: Changing my name tomorrow... anyone else have mixed feelings?
I totally understand. We got married in November and I've been procrastinating doing it. I finally went to Social Security a week ago since my fiance has been bugging me! I plan to go to the DMV this week. I didn't want to hyphenate either so I decided to change my middle name to my maiden name. At work, I've still been using the maiden name and my fiance said he hates when he calls my cell and hears my maiden name, so I just changed that!

Re: Changing my name tomorrow... anyone else have mixed feelings?
I am 27 and I had a very difficult time with this as well. Because I consider myself more on the traditional side, I didn't think I would have issues. When the time came, I just couldn't do it.
I decided for now to add his name on to mine on all paper work. I'm not a hyphenation fan either so I will go with my maiden name at work and by his socially. All my paperwork has both names.
I decided when I have kids, I'll completely change my name to his. I think I'll be ready.
Maybe you should take some time to think it over.

Re: Changing my name tomorrow... anyone else have mixed feelings?
I don't understand what is up with the guys? Would they change their names? I bet the answer is a big fat NO. Why are we expected to do this like it is pushing a button. They fell in love with us and we had our maiden names so what is the problem. Scott doesn't even bring up this subject. I told him that he has to stand on every single line with me when I hypenate my name.

Re: Changing my name tomorrow... anyone else have mixed feelings?
Thanks Girls! Don't need to think it over. Just need to get it over! Once I do it I will be fine. Out last names don't lend themselves to hyphenating, and my middle name is/was my Mothers first name so definitely want to keep that. I just need to **** it up tomorrow. I really very happy about being Mrs. K Just wish I didn't have to give anything up!

Re: Changing my name tomorrow... anyone else have mixed feelings?
It definately is bitter-sweet. I just changed my voicemail at work and like the week after the wedding DH was asking me why I hadn't changed my voicemail. Baby-steps for goodness sake I told him! So I asked him how he would like it if one day he was Mike G and then the next Mike D? Not so easy...huh?? I will take his name, both of us are fairly traditional about that, but it definately does take some getting used to. Plus it would help a little if I hated my name and loved his, but I love my nice simple Irish last name and am not such a fan of his long Polish name! Ah..all in the name of love!

Re: Changing my name tomorrow... anyone else have mixed feelings?
This post really made me think....
I spent so much time excited trying to get rid of this name- doodling my first name with boyfriends/current crushes last names- that now when I have to get rid of this last name, I don't want to part with it.

Re: Changing my name tomorrow... anyone else have mixed feelings?
I got married a few weeks ago and thought I was the only battling this. or I was too slow. I don't know the first step in changing my name. My husband is hurt about me hyphenating. I promised him I would take his name...but know I'm having a hesitation too. I am traditional I guess. But I'm used to my last name.
I have to say though that I like Michelle's idea that I will make him stand on line with me..if it means that much to him.

I did it!
Well I did it! Went to Freeport yesterday. I have to say they made it very easy. I was in and out of there in less than 5 min. Was a little emotional for me but it's done. I am officially Mrs. K thanks everyone for the support.

Sometimes I forget and sign my maiden name and then I feel like Whoopi in Ghost when she signs the wrong name.
