Fondant is a sweet, pasty substance that is rolled out and draped over a cake, then shaped. It is waxy, so that's one reason why some people don't like it. Here is a pic of a fondant cake:

Re: **********Official Non-Fondant wedding cakes******************

it depends who you go to...many bakeries buy fondant from a supplier so you will get that real sweet tasting fondant. Then some bakers, not many though, make their own and many even use rice krispies treats actually to make the fondant or other substances. I bought cupcakes from one place that makes their own and the fondant was the best part of the cupcake. So i would ask the bakery what they use.

Be careful with buttercream in the summer, and definitely no whipped cream.

The fondant is just on the edge of the cake, i dont like too much whipped cream or buttercream on cakes and i NEVER eat that one part. I always eat the cake from the other end and leave the edge with whatever is on it bc no matter what.

I went with fondant bc the shape i want, it NEEDS to be fondant or it wont shape the same way. We also have VH so they'll have tons of other things too.

Some cakes though, a good baker can make great shapes with butter cream and make it look very smooth. I would find out which bakeries are good with making smooth designs with buttercream. I saw one place that did an amazing job and i didnt even know it was buttercream

yeah i dont like icing no matter what it is, its always too sweet or too much of it. The icing is such a small part of the cake and not a big deal.

Re: **********Official Non-Fondant wedding cakes******************

The bakery I used to work at made an icing that looked like fondant but wasn't it was called chocolate boiled icing. It was an amazing look, the baker would also add food coloring to make different colors. It literally was a type of boiled icing that was then poured over a cake, it was spectacular looking and tasting. Not sure many do that anymore though.

Re: **********Official Non-Fondant wedding cakes******************

we aren't doing fondant -- our cake is included in our hall package and since we are doing a full viennesse hour we didn't think it would be necessary to pay extra for a cake from an outside bakery. (our hall doesn't do fondant, but i've heard their cakes are delicious)

if we had the choice of fondant i'm not sure which we would pick. i've heard mixed reviews about the taste. I like the look of some fondant cakes but others remind me of plastic?

Here are some non-fondant (i think?) cakes:

Re: **********Official Non-Fondant wedding cakes******************

Just some advice for girls getting non-fondant cakes. If you're using buttercream icing and planning on getting some sort of a ribbon trim....the natural oils from the buttercream will soak the ribbon and make the color darker than it normally is. Just something to keep in mind or to speak about with your baker.

Re: **********Official Non-Fondant wedding cakes******************

no fondant to me - both bakeries i had tried tasted like playdo in my mouth. Love what you can do with it but just rather taste good.

I marked this up and botched the color of the green so ignore that. It will have clovers on it with off white buttercream and scrolls and green ribbon that matches the girls if they can find it if not no ribbon and decorated iwth fresh flowers (no buttercream flowers)
