Am I The Only One..

That didnt legally change her name yet?
I said I was going to take my husbands name on the marriage license but here I am 3 months later still going by my maiden name...
I havent even thought about going to SS yet.
DH hasnt said anything to me about it either...
I think I'm just being lazy about it all

Re: Am I The Only One..

I procrastinated too..mostly because I just didnt want to do it. I liked my name and I wasnt looking forward to changing it at work and with the bank etc, etc. Finally I convinced hubby that I really really didnt want to do it and he agreed (after a little negotiation) to "let" me keep it - but that agreement came at Social Security believe it or not.

So I already had all the paperwork ready - its such a chore!

No, you are not the only one. I didnt want to give up my name either. I did change it on the mariage license, but didnt change anything else. My license, bank accounts, etc is still in my maiden name. My boss didnt change hers for ten years...after she had her twins.

Re: Am I The Only One..

It took me a while too ... I hypenate it at work only, but I do have a credit card and my school information still under my maiden name. I still, occasionally slip when I say my name. It's such a hard thing to let go ... I felt like I was giving up a piece of my identity.

I was married in November 2001 and I only changed my name with SS a week and a half ago, but I am keeping my maiden name professionally.

Re: Am I The Only One..

Another procrastinator here too! I have no desire to change my name and have been dreading the task and since it is such a chore it is so easy to put it off...'til tomorrow....almost 4 months later and I did made it to ssn and opened a new bank account in the new name (although I still have the old one in my maiden name). I do want to complete the chore just for consistency's sake...everytime I sign my name I have to think..that is annoying. I am hoping once I do it I will just get use to the new name and learn to like it.

I am holding on to it no matter what in the office at least as long as I am at my current job. I have been here for 7 years and that is how everyone knows me. I will just change it in payroll for taxes and to cash my check to my new account.

Re: Am I The Only One..

I changed mine everywhere but with SS, and I only added my married name onto my maiden name.
I cut ties slowly.

Re: Am I The Only One..

Good, so I no longer feel as bad that I have yet to, and really have no desire to, change my name...
I hypenate it when I need to, but at work I completely go by my maiden name. Im just not ready to go through all the hoops to change it. I wish he would just take my name

Re: Am I The Only One..

It's been a year and I have yet to go to change my passport and ssn. I have a few cc with my maiden name still and I'm still using my maiden name at work -- that's the way everyone has known me for the last 3yrs. I'd hate to see someone say who's Mrs. XXX? I agree it's a pain in the butt when you go to sign and you're like...now which name am I supposed to sign??

Re: Am I The Only One..

I got married in Sept. 2001 and I still have not changed my name. The only things that I use my married name on are medical (cuz I am covered under DH insurance and he put paperwork through with married last name) and 1 credit card. Other than that everything else still in maiden name.

This did present a problem for me recently though. I was in the hospital and when I found out I was going to be out of work for a while had to go on disability. My employer handles the disability so when they called the hospital to verify that I was there and to try to get the medical info they were told no one by that name had been admitted. Duhhh! My employer only knows my maiden name and all medical in my married name. I took a while but finally got straightened out.

I have decided though that since my license has to be renewed next month I will change my name then and just go with one name. No more confusion.

Re: Am I The Only One..

I've been procrastinating too. It's not that I don't want to change my name it's just that I really havent had the time to do it. I know it's going to take forever at the DMV but until I get my license changed I can't change my bank card or anything else for that matter because then I won't be able to use them. What a pain...but I know I have to do it because I need to get my address on my license changed as well. Right now it still has my parents old address. I haven't lived there in years and they moved from there almost a year ago.

Re: Am I The Only One..

I swear, I think I am the only woman (at least on this board) that did not have any issue changing my name. I never saw my name as my true identity, either. I am much more than a NAME!

In fact, the change was so natural that I have to think twice sometimes to say my name with my maiden name - SERIOUSLY - how wierd is THAT?

Re: Am I The Only One..

I didn't have a problem with changing my name. I never liked my maiden name, and I don't feel like it was my identity - I guess I always knew it'd go someday. However, I was hoping for a better name (and I don't like getting mail addressed to Mr. & Mrs. Al Lastname. I prefer Lisa & Al Lastname)

As for the name change process, I found it all to be pretty painless. Both SS and DMV were a breeze. The only issue I had was with my car registration - my leasing company was a pain. I didn't like having to mail my passport, but that all went easily enough too.

Re: Am I The Only One..

I hypenated my last name but go by my maiden last name on almost everything. I just went to SS last week and at some point I will go to the DMV. I changed with the bank and I think that is it. So bascially I am still my maiden name.
And if someone calls for Mrs. Scott's last name, I say "I am sorry my mother in law is not home"

Re: Am I The Only One..

I was happy to change my name. my maiden name was hard and i got a much easier one in marriage. anyone with a difficult last name knows how annoying it is to always spell, pronounce, have people say "What?" when you say it, have people screw up trying to pronounce it even as you coach them along....need i go on?
I love having the same last name as my dh plus now that we have a baby, it adds to the whole family unit in so many ways for me.

I did not either, there are many advantages to this too In social circles etc everyone knows so that's all that really matters. I love my name I still tell people to call me by my old name if they forget.

Re: Am I The Only One..

I at first had a big problem with the name change - I really didn't want to give up my maiden name and almost felt guilty as if it was a slap in the face to my late father.
But after the wedding, it felt so natural - it was the perfect next step for us to be a unified pair

I think anything goes nowadays - it should be whatever you're most comfortable with!

Re: Am I The Only One..

Elizabeth, I also had a very unusual, hard to spell/pronounce maiden name, and I couldn't wait to trade it in for my new, easy, ridiculously common last name. On my wedding day, however, I felt differently, and couldn't stand to part with my old name.
I think it may be because my maiden name is SO distinct, and I never realized how much I liked having the unusual name, aside from the spelling and pronounciation problems.
I do have to say that my maiden name is MUCH easier for my students and their parents, so the ONLY time I am Mrs. "R" is at work.

Re: Am I The Only One..

Me too. I never changed it on the marriage license or anywhere else. I initially said it was inconvenient because of my job - lots of name recognition with clients. Then I changed my job - and still no name change.

I kept making excuses and now we'll be celebrating our 3rd anniversary in June - still my maiden name.

I sometimes refer to myself with my married name (on cards and stuff) but all my documents are in may maiden name.

My DH doesn't care. I guess I'll change it eventually - maybe when we have our first child so it's not so confusing with the different names.

I'm not concerned - we're married and that's all that counts!!!

Re: Am I The Only One..

I too am doing the hyphenated thing & I feel weird giving up my maiden name. But most importantly.. at work I will probably always use my maiden name. I have been known in that circle for 8 years now... plus as I told my hubby... i had to touch DEAD people to get my funeral directors license!!!
And the name on it is STAYING on it!! My firts boss was so nice to have my license laminated & put on a beautiful wooden plaque too! I would have to send it back to get a new one!!

I am sure when it is time for children, I will sing a different tune!! Then I will go by his name only for everything but work!
