Changing last name
Hi everyone!!
For those of you who changed your last names when you got married, did you change EVERYTHING?
When I was at the bank the other day and we talked about changing my name someone told me NOT to change my last name for social security.
This doesn't make sense b/c I'm in school and EVERYTHING is through my SS#. Won't that get confusing if my legal name is changed but SS is not?
Please help
Thanks

Re: Changing last name
Yes, you should change your name for SS. That's the first thing I did actually. I changed everything over - driver's license, bank records, insurance, etc. If you change your name legally, and not with SS I'm sure that it will create all sorts of confusion with the government when you get a job.

Re: Changing last name
If you don't change your your name with SS, you cannot change your name at work and your tax returns must be filed under your maiden name. Otherwise you will incur a fine when the agency does a cross check.

Re: Changing last name
Betty thanks for bringing this up. I don't want to change ANYTHING. But I promised FH I'd add his last name on, so it will be Lizabeth A. XXX XXX (no hyphen)
Can I do that on the marraige license and leave everything else the way it is now? What are the legal implications of that? This post was edited 2/27/2003 10:27:31 AM.

Re: Changing last name
I dont think there are any. I haven't changed one thing yet and no problems, including our federal tax return.

Re: Changing last name
I agree it would get VERY confusing if you used different names on different forms.
Whatever you put for your social security name should be used for everything else.
I kept my maiden name as my middle name and LOVE the way it sounds. It also made my parents happy
Regardless don't worry you can always change your name later if you want, it took me 15 min in social sec. office to do and I got my new card in a week!!!

Re: Changing last name
Liz, I have been thinking the same thing. I really want to change it to Rebecca A. XXX xFHx and then just use xFHx socially. I really don't want to change my name at all, but I feel most strongly about not changing it professionally.
Anyone have any input on my situation? Sorry to hijack your post, Betty!

Re: Changing last name
I've been married since 7/01, and I've yet to change my name at SS. I've simply added my married name to the end of my maiden name every where else. I had no problem filing my taxes last year as Jennifer Renee C. R.
