Marriage License, how many copies?

Do I need to get to use for changing my credit cards, license etc?

Do I get copies the day I apply for marriage license or do I have to wait until after we are married for copies?

You have to wait to get your marriage certificate - which is different than the marriage license you apply for (you need the license to get married and then you get the certificate to prove you did it). After I got the original certificate, I ordered the copies.

You will need them to change your name, but no one keeps it. I did all my name changing with just the original. I did order two copies though, just to have.

You won't get a copy of your marriage license until about 1-2 weeks after your wedding. This is because the person who officiates has to sign it and then it gets processed through the town/state.

I did not order any other copies. When I went to DMV and SS, the bank, human resources, etc., they just looked at my original and gave it back. Some made copies of it for their files, but I didn't have to supply it. I will order a certified copy though to change my name on my passport. That has to be done by mailing it away.

For credit cards, I did it all over the phone. Only Lord and Taylor made me request the name change in writing, but did not require proof!!

Just be sure when you change your name, do it consistently throughout, i.e., if you do it one way on SS, do it the same way throughout. Long story short, but I kept my maiden name as my middle name and on SS card, spelled it out. Since I now have a long last name, spelling it all out was not an option on credit cards and such. Plus DMV does not allow you to make your maiden name your middle name on your license (they say you need a court order to do so!!). In the end, at DMV, I just dropped any reference to my middle name and went by Firstname NewLastName.

Same with Erica, only have one copy and its the only one I ever needed. One credit card company wanted to see a copy of it to change my name but mostly the others just changed my name over the phone.

I just made copies.
If you change your SS, or license, all you need is photo copy.
You dont need a copy for your credit cards, I just called up, and they did it over the phone.

Ditto to Erica. I doubt I'll ever order another copy. I need to make a photocopy to change my IRA, but that's about it. No one has ever asked for a certified copy of our marriage license.

Just one. You may feel wierd at first when you have to send it to change your passport, etc...but they always return it in perfect shape. I keep mine in a clear paper folder thingy whenever I sent it, that way it doesn't get handled.

I just recently ordered a second copy. To change your passport by mail, you have to mail in a copy of your marriage license. I was a little nervous about it, plus I want to keep one around to change everything else while I wait to get it back. If I wasn't doing this, I doubt I would need more than one copy.

It is taking a very long time to get it by mail (I hear if you stop in the office where you got it from it is much quicker).

I just have one too. I have already done SS, banks and am getting ready to do DMV. They just want to see it, then they give it back.
