Re: Questions for old married woman, Just Kidding I really do have a question for those who hyphenated name
I changed my SS card and will change everything once we move. I just want it to all be uniform. I think you're supposed to, even though it's hyphenated with your old name, it's still different. In fact my dermatologist office called me, they were having trouble submitting my insurance forms with just my old name b/c it was changed with the insurance company. So I would do it all.

I havent officially changed my name at all. It does cause some confusion. My DH has been referred to as Mr. (my last name) numerous times. He laughs it off.

Re: Questions for old married woman, Just Kidding I really do have a question for those who hyphenated name
I offically hypenated my last name. I changed SS first. I also changed all bank accounts, credit cards etc... I also changed my 401K, insurance etc... I still have to go to DMV. I guess I should do that soon. I use my maiden name at work and never changed my e-mail address.
So to answer your question, if you hypenate on your marriage license you should change all legal docs too.
But you can use your maiden name alone and your married name alone on non-legal docs as long as you are not trying to defraud anyone it's fine.

Re: Questions for old married woman, Just Kidding I really do have a question for those who hyphenated name
I thought about hypenating, but wondered if it would be even more confusing! My co-worker just got married and hypenated her name legally, but not really anywhere else at work (email, etc) so everyone still refers to her as her maiden name.
Whatever it's changed to, it should be consistent

Re: Questions for old married woman, Just Kidding I really do have a question for those who hyphenated name
Teri, that's probably what I'll do...does anyone know if there are any legal requirements? If I hyphenate, do I HAVE to change my driver's license, Soc Security card, etc? And if so, is there a window to do it in, like a year or something??

Re: Questions for old married woman, Just Kidding I really do have a question for those who hyphenated name
Your hyphenated name will have to become your legal name if you want it on your license, SS card etc. In order to change these docs, your hyphenated name will have to be on your marriage license.
What I did was change my last name legally and use my maiden name as a middle name. That way I can use it freely and have it on some records (like school) and not others.
You can also hyphenate without legally making that your name but it may become confusing for offices who keep records in alphabetical order

Re: Questions for old married woman, Just Kidding I really do have a question for those who hyphenated name
I hypernated my name on the marriage certificate and everything else, I fiqured it would just be easier that way. Although my new last name is so long, it doesn't show up on most things!!! I went from a shortie last name to a long one, and with the hypernated......well forget about it!!!! :)

Re: Questions for old married woman, Just Kidding I really do have a question for those who hyphenated name
You cannot use only your married name on your license if you hypenated it on your marriage license. Whatever that and your SS card says IS your offical name. I haven't changed my license yet so it is no big deal but when I do it will have to be hypenated.

Re: Questions for old married woman, Just Kidding I really do have a question for those who hyphenated name
Ok, so what if I don't hyphenate and just use both names (my maiden name as middle name)...can I then legally use both? I really don't want to change my drivers' license... is there any sort of time frame in which you are legally required to change it, if you did hyphenate? I'm so confused.
