Banking ?
What do you do when you get checks written to your maiden name?
Right now I have 2 accounts one in each name (2 different banks) but the one in my maiden name is a pain in the neck to get to and I have 2 big checks to deposit. I am dreading the walk thru the Empire State Building to deposit them. I want to close this account but I keep getting maiden name checks.
Can you put your maiden name on the married name bank account? I may go ask the bank at lunch - just curious what you guys do?

Re: Banking ?
I changed to my married name on my bank accounts, but still use my old checks with my maiden name on them. Which makes me think they are pretty flexible. I would call the bank that you prefer to go to and ask them. I'm pretty sure they'll take the checks!

Re: Banking ?
I use to work at a Bank. The problem is when you cash them. If you are just depositing, sign your maiden name and underneath that, sign your married name. And underneath that your account number! It should be fine.

Re: Banking ?
Maybe you can indorse the check with your first name, maiden name and married name and deposit in your account with the married name.
I be interested with what you find out.
I know that my bank wouldn't allow me to deposit a check written out to me and my husband so we're in the process of opening a joint account.

Re: Banking ?
I work for a bank - they shouldn't have a problem with depositing checks in your maiden name.
I deposit checks in my married name all the time (and I never changed my name - legally or with the bank). They usually don't give you a problem as long as you are depositing (and not cashing).
Hope this helps.

Re: Banking ?
I changed my name on my account, but also have A/K/A [my maiden name]. I've never had a problem.

Re: Banking ?
I thought I should just do what Cira described and all would be well but didn't want to chance it. So I went to the bank today at lunch and he told me it depends on how much the check is for (all I want to do is deposit them). He said small checks I should not have a problem with just signing over but larger checks I would. Since both checks are kind of large (over $1,000), he said I would just need to bring my marriage license when I go to deposit it and first bring the checks to the service desk and have them sign off on it. So I will try this later in the week and hopefully I should be fine.
