IMPORTANT when changing your name at Motor Vehicle

(I should probably post this on the BHB side but for any newley weds..)

If you are changing your name on your registration as well BRING YOUR TITLE TO YOUR CAR. I went there yesterday, was there for an hour and never even thought about bringing my title. Now I have to go back to do that

good suggestion! DMV is such a nightmare I would never want to go there more often than absolutely necessary!!

But, if you forget, you can just change your DL for now. My DH's car is under my name and I didn't think to bring that title - so when I got the renewal in the mail, there are directions to change the name on that title and registration - as long as my DL is correct I can do everything through the mail

The SAME thing happened to me!! I went to change my license and completely forgot about my registration and title! I was so mad at myself! I still haven't changed them....

Is that only for a renewel? The woman said she needed to see the title to change it. I wonder if I can do it through the mail

im glad you posted this bc i totally forgot that i had to do this!!! i changed my license but havent changed the title yet..

this happened to me too....I had to run home and get it. I was so annoyed.

Betty - yep, they need the original title too so you mail the renewal form, original title and photocopy of your new DL with new name and you're all set!

What's the deal if you are leasing a car? Do you even get a title? I've never leased before ... but who knows it took them so long to mail me the registration, I thought I was going to get a ticket for an expired temporary! :(

But don't you NEED the original title? Do they mial it back to you?

christine...one of our cars is leased...and most likely you will have to get a power of attorney (thats what I had to do) to change the title...

yes, you need the title (I hate the thought of it in the mail ) but it has your name on it, so they send you a new one with your new name.

Not sure about leasing, but I financed my other car and I have the title in my name too, but with a lien and the financing co's info on the bottom.
