great picnic tips from kraft kitchens
Pack your favorite salad in sealed plastic bags. It makes them easier to pack and lighter to carry. You can fit more salads in your cooler that way and don't have to worry about getting a good seal on your serving bowls.Pack heavier items at the bottom of your cooler so you won't crush anything on top. Also, try to pack things you'll need immediately closer to the top so you don't have to keep the cooler open longer than necessary.
Place a moistened wash cloth or small dish towl in a plastic bag in the freezer. Then add it to yor picnic basket or cooler just before you walk out the door. After you eat, you can use the washcloth for cleaning up.
If you'll be picnicing somewhere with running fresh water, pack powdered drink mix and bring a pitcher. That way you can have fresh beverages without carrying any extra heavy weight.
Enlist your child's red wagon to help transport your picnic goodies. It will make them feel good about helping and save you strain on your back.
Be sure to bring lots of bug spray and sunscreen. Keep an extra bottle of each in your cooler or with blankets so you'll always have it when you need it.
Pack some empty garbage bags so you'll have them for clean-up.
Bring some games - a frisbee or a kite for kids to play with.
Make the kids their own buffet table with paper table cloth and crayons that they can decorate!
Don't let a rainy day spoil your picnic, lay down a blanket or beach towel indoors, add a beach movie and picnic indoors!
Small kiddie pools are great to fill with ice, and add to the buffet table and place chilled salads and foods for a fun way to display and keep cool. Get another one and put all the beverages on ice.
Keep a picnic kit ready packed all summer for spur of the moment fun! Also a great summer gift!!! Get a basket or deep box, assorted containers for food, thermos, paper plates, palstic cups & utensils, paper napkins, plastic table cloth, mathces, sharp knife, bottle/can opener, salt & pepper, citronella candles, first aid kit and wet ones or hadiwipes.
Use a muffin tin to hold all different condiments -- easy to pack and keeps things organized.
Newspaper is a great hot and cold insulator. Wrap hot casseroles for picnics in heavy duty foil with newspaper around it . Tight packing prevents spills and insulates to keep food warm for 2-3 hours.
Open a Hot Dog bar buffet with all sorts of toppings to appeal to the young and old (regular condiments for the kids, and fun salsas and chopped veggies for the adults)
Open a can of sugary soda and watch the bees keep busy and not bother you!
Bring baking soda along on a picnic and mix with water for a paste this will take the sting out of bee and insect bites until you get home!
