3/26/11 Wedding Review - Fox Hollow, Duet, Lola Loves Makeup...

Thanks to LIW and all of the wonderful ladies on here for their fabulous ideas, advice, and support!

Engagement Ring - Tiffany
DH bought my engagement ring from the Manhasset location - it's a single emerald cut diamond in platinum. He talked to them about what he was looking for, and went back a few weeks later to look at some diamonds that they had brought in for him to pick from. The markup doesn't seem like it was too terrible, it appraised for a bit more than he paid. I took it to the 5th Avenue store to have the band made smaller right away, and had it polished a year after were engaged and again right before the wedding (all free). They're always very nice.

Save the Date - DIY
These were originally supposed to be the photo on the left, but in a tremendous stupid-bride moment, it hadn't occurred to me that the tiny pencil meant they couldn't go through the postage machines and would require double postage. At that point, I really needed to just get these out, so I modified to the one on the right. However I do have 150 tiny black pencils if anyone's in need. Many thanks to Veronica for writing the Spanish lingo for DH's side! The paper is heavy silver metallic stock from paperandmore dot com...envelopes were in the same stock. A regular stamp was enough.

Shower - Westbury Manor
I believe my sisters had no complains about WM! The shower was so fun, and the food was all great! In their menu meeting, my mom mentioned that she had no idea how she'd pick what to order and that the MOB should get one of everything (kidding). When our food came that day, she had a dish of what she did ultimately order, and then a huge platter of one of every option!

Invitations - DIY
Paper came from paperandmore dot com. They custom cut the 6' squares of the actual invitation sheet as well as the parchment slip. I cut the inserts myself. After a ton of pricing these papers from a ton of sites, these guys were definitely the cheapest. Everything came quickly and in great shape. I did the printing on my laser printer with no trouble. The only thing I'd say (which has been said a million times before) is to bring your sample invite to a couple of post offices to make sure they tell you the same thing about the postage price. I only went to my post office (Bethpage) and they told me it was parcel price, which in comparison to what other girls were doing, I think was wrong. I know the postage is more for square, but it was otherwise not out of the ordinary. I ordered custom stamps from Zazzle, figuring if I had to put a ton of postage on it, I might as well spend a little more and have it look nice.

Gown - Bridal Reflections
My gown was purchased and altered at the Massapequa Bridal Reflections. I know we all know a lot about their reputation - I'm not sure I have any news to add. The sales end of it went fine - they were very helpful, and they matched price with RK Bridal. But - I had been there and was interested in 3 gowns. I made an appointment to go back a couple of months later, and when I made the appointment, told them that I wanted to try on gown 'A' again for my sisters, and that we would be giving a deposit to order it. When we got there (for a 7pm appointment), the sample was no where. It turned out to be at the Carle Place store. They sent the courier to bring it over immediately, so it was only about a half hour wait. But while we were waiting, the sales woman told me that 'we figured since you had two other gowns noted on your card, that would be enough for you to see today.' UMM....?!?!!?! I think I politely told her to just not talk to me about it. *eye roll* That annoyance might be why they so easily matched price for me, though.
Alterations...the ladies at the desk were great. The seamstress I could have done without. Here work was fine, however there were factory imperfections in the bodice that were a big deal, and we tried to have a calm conversation with her about what we did not like and if there was some way we could fix it. She reacted as if we were accusing her or the shop of doing something wrong, told us repeatedly that there was nothing that could be done, and just kept telling us that is was a machine-made gown, and that's how that type of lace is, and to just deal with it. Ultimately she did some work that helped, but again, we didn't really need the stress. And - it turned out part of the problem was how I was placed in my bra, which I did keep asking her to help with.
The gown itself was Paloma Blanca's 4063. I loved it. My sisters and mom made me try it on as a joke, funny how those things work out! But I did enjoy months of telling DH that I wouldn't be able to reach him in my poofy dress with my short arms.

DOJ
My ears aren't pierced and I didn't want clip-ons, so I decided to go with a vintage style choker. I purchased it from MercuryJane on etsy. She was awesome to work with...I ultimately chose her standard Grace Kelly necklace, but she took some time to keep an eye out for me while antiquing because I was hoping for a unique brooch with larger crystals in it. She wasn't able to find anything, but I was very happy with the one we landed on. My bracelet was a Tiffany pearl bracelet that DH bought me for Valentine's Day the month prior to the wedding.

Wedding Bands - Marlowe Credit Jeweler
DH's and my platinum bands both came from Marlowe's Ozone Park location - my family has been going there for decades and they were by far the best price, especially considering these are custom even though they were simple. They were roughly half the price we got from custom jewelers on Long Island.
(DH's cufflinks came from somewhere on etsy, but the dominoes keep falling off, so they're not so great.)

Veil - Borrowed
My sister's veil which came from Bridal Veil Falls in NYC.

BM Dresses - David's Bridal
The girls' dresses came from the Westbury DB. It can get chaotic in there, so it's better to go during the day or first thing in the morning on weekends. The gowns were all in good shape - the girls had their own seamstresses do the alterations - most went to a family friend who works out of her home studio in Smithtown, she is amazing (doesn't do bridal gowns though).

Tuxes - Men's Warehouse
We've gone to the Westbury MW in the past for other weddings, and I really do not like it there. When I accompanied my dad, DH, and BIL last year to pick up their tuxes for my sister's wedding, the staff there was resistant and annoyed when we asked them to steam the pants because they were all crumpled. SO we tried the Plainview location, and it was a completely different experience. Everyone was SO helpful, and when DH and I went to get his tux, they had him put the entire thing on, and a seamstress came out and said that the pant and sleeve hems weren't right, so they redid them and had us go back for it. Turned out great!

Rehearsal & Dinner
Our rehearsal at the church was nice, but I know that they can be hit or miss depending on who is running them for you. We went overly-prepared, as my sister's rehearsal there the year before was led by someone who was not very informative, and we had a lot of questions then that couldn't be answered. It helps to bring your program (and if you aren't doing programs, just write one out for yourself so the person knows the order that you're doing things), and definitely know at what point you are having the unity candles lit by the moms (or whoever) and then by you and the groom. We've heard that different priests put this in various parts of the ceremony, dependent upon their preference, so it helps to clarify that with them prior to your rehearsal. Also know how you want your bridesmaids walking down - with guys, alone, locking arms, etc.
My parents hosted our rehearsal dinner at my sister's house. We crammed in about 30 people, which was a little scary, but it was so much fun. My parents got 'dinner roll sandwiches' from Dominick's in New Hyde Park, which is a standard for us, and was wonderful as always. My mom and sister contributed the sides and salads, and I picked a napoleon cake from Francesco's in Hicksville (see below for that review).

GM Gifts
DH is half Cuban and takes dominoes very seriously. We tried to swing real domino sets as wedding favors, but we couldn't get them cheaply enough, so DH chose to give the groomsmen sets in black leather cases. We purchased them from amazon and really liked them - we checked the cases and they were all in great shape, however we didn't open the dominoes themselves since they were wrapped up...in playing with one of the sets recently, DH noticed that a couple pieces have marks on the back. We'll try to get those pieces replaced.
He also gave the guys a set of whiskey stones which came from thinkgeek dot com, along with bottles of Johnny Walker. The best man also got a blue flame zippo lighter.

BM Gifts
Since we were all sleeping over at a hotel the night before the wedding, I decided to get the girls nice pjs that were button down, so they didn't mess up their hair when getting dressed in the morning. As we were up at 4:30, it was way too early to wear any 'bride' or 'bridesmaid' shirts. These came from Victoria's Secret, and were 100% cotton and soooo soft.
I gave them black pashminas that had some flecks of silver thread in them, and a lariat necklace and earrings which came from AnnsCrafts on etsy. She was great to work with - we slightly modified something she already had for the earrings.
For my sisters, MOHs, I also gave them each a ceramic serving dish...I love them, I spotted them at a houseware store up in Albany, but the line is also carried at The Collector in Merrick. I was happy to find something different but still useful, even for someone who already has a house full of things.

Reader Gifts
We decided to do gifts for our readers, as they were all OOT-ers and traveled in a day early to make the rehearsal. We gave Woodstock windchimes. DH and I love giving these as gifts...we like that they are from NY, and they're beautifully pitched and come in a ton of sizes. Again, shopping for grownups who already have established houses, we went with this as it was the beginning of spring and just about time for people to be using their yards again.

Makeup - LolaLovesMakeup
Not sure what to say about Andrea that hasn't already been said here! I couldn't be more happy. Everyone looked beautiful (she did me, all BMs, and my mom), and all of the BM's moms loved how their girls looked. She is so so easy to work with, and super affordable.

Hair - Bridal Touch by Elena
Everyone's hair wound up looking amazing, and definitely lasted the day, but it was a little stressful getting there. We felt that Elena wasn't the best listener, and even when we showed her a picture, we didn't feel she was interpreting it correctly. She was defensive when we asked her to make changes (though also acted happy to do them), and would explain why she did what she did, when we would say blatantly that it was completely not what was desired. Just a little extra stress that we could have done without that morning. But like I said - end results were great. She stayed MOSTLY in the timeframe we'd discussed...about a half hour per girl. But I'd allow a little more. My SIL needed her hair done over almost completely and that really really delayed our morning.

Limos
These were in the family, so no need to review.

Photography/Video - Duet
Our photographer was TJ and we couldn't have been more happy with him. It was a pleasure to spend the day with him and his team. We're waiting on our video, but our proofs came beautiful. I think he takes less pictures than other photographers at Duet, but we weren't missing any shots, so we were very happy. I have a couple of albums of the proofs on Facebook, feel free to friend me if you'd like to see them. Or there are a few teasers from him on our share site: http://vedricwedding.shutterfly.com/

DJ - FM Entertainment
Frank (by himself) was our DJ, as he was for both of my sisters as well. Price was very affordable, and he does an awesome job.

Florist - PWP
We chose PWP to do our personals, and 2 altar vases. Following is what we was in our contract, along with what we received.
1. Bride's bouquet
Ordered & received white mini calla lillies. They were OK...kind of yellowy/green, but I understand that the shade of these can vary. Eh.

2. Groom's bout
Ordered: mini calla. Received: mini calla with huge bush of something that looked like yellow baby's breath. Not tasteful in my opinion - I hated the way it looked, and if I realized the pictures would have caught it, I would have had him not wear it.

3. Dad/Gpa/Godfather bouts
Ordered & received BEAUTIFUL perfect white rose bouts. I'm normally weary of white roses as they can sometimes brown on the edges, but somehow these were perfect and the most gorgeous flowers we had.

4. MOB corsage
Ordered & received yellow mini roses and mini carnations - this was fine.

5. MOG corsage
Ordered: orchid corsage
Received: completely wilted orchid corsage
Replaced during morning reveal/portrait photos before we went to the church.

6. GM bouts
Ordered: anemone bouts, specifically like this picture but without the dotted ribon
Received: white anemone bouts, where each flower was crushed/wilted and browned.
Some were replaced AFTER the church - the replacements didn't look much better.

7. Altar Vases
Ordered: vases of all white flowers, to be used after church at the foot of our table
Received: vases of white flowers that were wilted, some crispy, and some brown
When we arrived back at the Fox Hollow following the church, our limo unloaded all of our things. Our Maitre'd (Zach) saw the altar vases, and asked why they were being wheeled into the building, as he thought they were garbage and on their way out. He crossed paths with me and asked me who did our flowers. (lol) I told him to throw them away, but he insisted that he would have them make something new. Some arrangements appeared behind our table, I assume this is why.

(MOH/BM bouquets: as the girls were in black dresses, our plan was that the MOHs would have white anemones, and each of the other 4 girls would have a single different color anemone, bright colors that would stand out on the black.)

8. 2 MOH bouquets
Ordered: two identical bouquets of white anemones
Received: two crushed bouquets of browned and wilting white anemones
My sisters walked down the aisle with these at church; following our ceremony, the florist replaced them with some kind of plain white flower. They were out of the white anemones (see number 11).

9. BM bouquet
Ordered: red anemone bouquet
Received: squashed and wilted red anemone bouquet
After taking our reveal and portrait photos at the Fox Hollow, we waited - and were made late - at least 20 minutes for the florist to bring us replacement bouquets. This was one of them. Instead of red, it was a dark dark purple that you could barely see against the dress.

10. BM bouquet
Ordered: light purple bouquet
Received: squashed and wilted light purple bouquet
Wasn't replaced.

11. BM bouquet
Ordered: yellow anemone bouquet
Received: purple anemone bouquet (squashed and dead)
This bouquet was 'corrected' as well while we waited and became late for our ceremony. What took so long? They were spray painting a white bouquet to be yellow.

12. BM bouquet
Ordered: pink anemone bouquet
Received: squashed and wilted pink anemone bouquet
Wasn't replaced.

Important to note: all florals (minus altar vases) were dropped off to my hotel room four hours before my ceremony. My BMs took the boxes from the delivery girl, asked her to wait so they could make sure everything was accounted for, and she RAN. RAN as in, they could not catch her by the time they put the boxes down and went down the hall after her.
I tried contacting the PWP director all morning via email and their office phone - we could not reach them until 10 am when they opened. VERY important that you have cell phone contact for your vendors.

Four days after the wedding, I began reaching out to Scotto Brothers and PWP to give them an opportunity to make good on this. It took multiple weeks for them to tell me that our money for the damaged flowers ($530) would be reimbursed to me. I was told to wait weeks for a check. Upon not receiving the check, I again had to call and speak with 4 different people to find out where our money was. When they followed up a day later (a Friday at this point), they said the check was being cut immediately, but that since we'd paid with a Visa, they could just put the money back on our card to make it faster. Note this is 6 weeks after the fact. We said OK. It was now 5pm on Friday. Within 5 minutes of giving them that OK, I received a text from Chase that our account was overdrawn. I called back immediately to find out that they debited our card instead of crediting it. Not much of an apology or remorse when I pointed out that our account was overdrawn and it would now be the weekend and several days for the money (now $1060) to go back into our account. I contacted some other folks at Scotto to tell them about this - while we received some apologies over the following days, there was really nothing else to be done. Just like there's nothing to be done about our wedding photos of dead and/or wrong flowers. I am just glad that we are - finally - done.

OOT Bags - DIY
I thought the gable boxes were too small, so we picked up normal white gift bags and stapled them shut for these. We included: juice pouches, trail mix bars, cookie bags, fruit chips, whisps (one-time tooth brushes), mini lint rollers, gel air fresheners, and gum.

Programs, Unity Candle, Placecards, Menus - DIY
Plain and simple. Matched the other stationary. I'm a graphic designer, and I am beyond in love with our handwriting font, so these were my happiest things. For anyone DIY-ing placecards, I have done them for a ton of events now and I highly highly recommend that you get Avery's tent cards as opposed to any of the Wilton types of brands. The paper quality is SO much better, and the perforations are as well, so they look really clean when you punch them out.
My grandma had our unity candle made out of our invitation.

Centerpieces - DIY
Mirrors came from jerry6862001 on ebay and were the cheapest, according to my research at the time. The pillar candles (also cheapest per my hours of researching...) were from ebay seller rssdist. The tea lights came from cudge dot net - awesome because they came in clear cups, but I actually wound up taking them out of the cups anyway to put them in the holders. The holders were from Ikea - cheapest. All of the candles were odorless and smoke-free.

Favors - DIY
We went back and forth with a lot of ideas - mostly black&white theme ones. We landed on this one after much deliberation...we are obsessed with fancy sea salts, so we thought this was personal, matched our theme, and if somoene didn't like salt, they at least got two great jars out of it. We gave one set per couple - and with them on the tables, they helped fill it out and the cellophane added a bit to the glowing candles. The white sea salt costs practically nothing...with the cost of the jars and black lava sea salt added in, these were between $6.50 and $7 per couple. It probably could have been a hair lower, but I WAY overestimated the black salt...since it's so coarse, I needed a way lower weight to fill the jar than the weight I needed of the white salt. I had over 5 lb leftover. Oh well!! The jars are actually Libby - they came in sets of 12 and are exclusive to Target dot com. The black salt came from Amazon seller The Spice Lab, where it was the cheapest per pound.
I tagged them myself, with tags that said what was in each jar, what to do with it, and the health benefits. (This is also where we listed our photo share site.)
And we did B&W cookies for the kids/teens.

Thank Yous - DIY/Shutterfly
I created these myself from our proofs, and ordered through Shutterfly...they're nice, but I probably should have gotten a sample first. The stock isn't photo stock, so it's really flat looking and almost has a texture. And the Shutterfly logo on the back is sort of tremendous.

Church - Saint Aidan's, Williston Park
This was the home parish of both DH and I, so it made sense for us to have our ceremony there. The entire experience was a breeze. The pre-cana classes there were one evening a week for five weeks, so I know that is more than other parishes. It was also a huge group - about 18 couples - so it was more lecture format. However...that entailed discussion of the episodes of Everybody Loves Raymond that we'd watch during the meetings.
Day of, everything was really nice. Unfortunately, the priest who married us had orthoscopic hip surgery a few days before our wedding, but he was a trooper and the ceremony was great.

Hall - Fox Hollow
As far as guests were concerned, (we believe) everyone had a lovely time. The space looked beautiful (Garden Terrace), the food was great.
Our maitre'd was Zach, and he was awesome. Everywhere. Didn't miss a beat. Calming as much as I could have been calmed (see florist, and dead flowers).
We had significant follow up with Mike Tinelli and the other Mike who is at the top of their general management. They were both very articulate and clear; I liked them, and perhaps they were just good at telling me what I wanted to hear, but I was glad to be doing business with them.
Our menu meeting (the one prior to the final dropoff meeting) turned out to be somewhat useless. 4 things were blatantly discussed, that turned out to be completely inaccurate.

1. Per their menu, the veggie dish included risotto, so I asked what the option would be for a vegan guest. The response, 'They should just tell their server that they are vegan, and they will get a baked potato instead of the risotto.' Great! On the day of our wedding, I ordered my entree, and asked them if they could just bring me a side of the risotto (because risotto is awesome). My food arrived without it, so I reminded our waitress about it. Her response, 'Risotto has cream in it, so we stopped serving it a while ago.' And I said 'Of course it has cream, but it's supposed to be a veggie dish, not a vegan one.' She repeated her first response, so I said 'By 'a while ago,' do you mean earlier today, or like - last week?' And she said 'I mean, like months ago.' I asked her to go around to whoever ordered that dish and ask if they would like to reorder, as they received a baked potato not risotto. She came back and told me many people had reordered.

2. When we booked there, we discussed that we needed somewhere to take our reveal photos at 9 am. We were told that we could do them there, on the grounds outside, and in the halls of the building, as we were a day wedding and no one else would be there in the morning. In this menu meeting, I mentioned that, and the woman we met with said 'okay, sure' and wrote down that we would be arriving then. The groom and GMs needed to leave for the church by 10:15.
In our final dropoff meeting, I mentioned to Mike T that we were doing this. His response was that the building did not open until 10. Why were we not told that in our menu meeting? Wouldn't the other employee have known that? At that point, it was 6 weeks before the wedding, and we could have figured out another plan for the morning photography. At this point, it was five days before. I called Duet for advice, but they told me that we would just work around it and we would take pictures outside until 10.

3. Linens. We were asked in our menu meeting if we wanted white or ivory linens, and I said all white, as our 'theme' was black & white. In our dropoff meeting, as Mike was going over all of our details, he said that he noticed we were down for chair covers, but that they'd gotten new chairs since we'd booked and perhaps we'd like to see them and reconsider the covers. We looked at them, and decided to keep the covers, and I explained that I wanted the covers to help bring the 'white' into the room for our 'theme.' His response was that we were down for ivory linens. ?! And further, they don't have white chair covers at all, only ivory. At this point, I was more than annoyed - there was no way we said the wrong color in our meeting, AND I even told her that the white linens were OK even though they only had them in solid material, as opposed to the patterned ivory that she'd showed us. He looked back to find that on our written paperwork, she'd marked white, but then when our info was transferred to their computer, it was changed to ivory. At that point, we said to just skip the chair covers, and do the white linens.

4. I have a shellfish allergy and cannot have food cooked with or fried with shellfish. We decided to remove all of the shellfish from our wedding, also because I actually get hives from people when they kiss me due to their food and pets, and for one day I didn't want to worry about it (in fact, I high-fived guests with dogs). With that, we needed to make some menu modifications. In our menu meeting, she offered us a veal dish and told us to choose either francese or marsala. We chose the marsala - and actually had a discussion about how veal francese is kind of different and you don't really hear of that often - marsala is safer.
In calling after our menu meeting to ask about some of the menu changes, I happened to list the entrees we were having and said the veal marsala. She insisted that I did not choose that, that I choose the francese. I said that I did not, and would never have as I feel that is a strange dish. Due to other modifications, I needed to follow up with Mike T. He helped us figure out the rest of our menu over the phone, and it was settled.
In our final dropoff meeting, when we arrived, he said 'Were you the one with the veal francese issue?' I said yes, and he said 'You were right, that isn't really a dish, we should have told you veal picatta.' Ahh. Well THAT I have heard of.

Toward the end of the night, when the chocolate fountain and cordial cart came out, either the BM or M'D came to tell me that the coffee cart wasn't coming out because the espresso machine had broken. With a shoulder shrug. I asked them to get one from another room, and they said no other room gets the coffee cart so they didn't have one. I explained that DH's family is Cuban and they don't drink regular coffee - to please go to their tables and ask who would like espresso from the kitchen. It was everyone. Go figure.

At the end of the party, I actually sat and talked with Mike T before we left about these problems. He corrected me and said the espresso machine wasn't broken - it had been unplugged from its plugged-in-warming-up state, so just wouldn't have been ready in time. For those who know the Garden Terrace, that little hall between the bridal suite/kitchen and the room itself has a outlet along the wall - that is where the espresso cart was plugged in. Where all of the waiters run back and forth the entire time. Seemed to me like they could have been more careful with keeping the machine plugged in, and at least could have kept an eye on it to make sure it was hot.

The food was very good, however I felt the cocktail hour was skimpy - my mom even found them not refilling some of the chafing dishes. She stood there until she did when she saw the potato tray at the carving station sit empty for 10 minutes. I don't know what was going on there. This was a month before the Somerley had its first wedding, so I'm sure they were in the thick of all that - but - you don't ignore your current business because you have a trainwreck in the next room. I was really disappointed.

Make sure you go back over every detail in your final meeting - and have it as early in the week of your event as they will let you, so you have plenty of time if things need editing.

Wedding Cake - Francesco's
We actually used Francesco's for a few things.
Shower cake: Devil's food cake with hazelnut mousse, whipped cream outside. Amazing.
Rehearsal cake: Napoleon style cake, with fresh strawberries and custard. This was awesome, but in the past when I've ordered this from other bakeries with whipped cream on the outside, they come completely covered with whipped cream. Francesco's prepares it with the usual choco/vanilla swirl frosting on top, and then whipped cream around the sides with sliced almonds all over it (see pic earlier in post). It was delicious, but kind of busy for what I was expecting, and we have some folks with nut and chocolate problems, so that was a bummer. But - live and learn! I should have asked.
Wedding cake: Almond flavored cake with a bit of custard and raspberry preserve. This was awesome as well. Hints toward rainbow cookie flavor, without the density and color of that. Whipped cream on the outside. Everything was really fresh.
Kiddie favors (pic above): Black & White cookies. While these were delicious, they were unfortunately packed way too soon. Two days before the wedding, we picked up the 3 dozen I'd ordered, and the cellophane wrapping was stuck to all of the frosting...they were quite a mess. I took them anyway...I was resigned at that point that we couldn't fix anything that close to the wedding! And we did give them to the kids...if they were for adults, I would not have taken them. I had extras and took them to show Francesco after the wedding, just so he knew that it had happened and they could be more careful. He was very surprised to see them like that, and apologetic - he reimbursed us, which we were very appreciative of.

Honeymoon
We couldn't get away until a few months after the wedding, so the night of, we drove out to Greenport and spent a couple of nights. It was off season, and way too cold for the end of March, but in spite of that, we had an awesome weekend. It was so nice to decompress in a quiet place by ourselves. I highly recommend getting away from things even if it's just for a day afterward. We missed seeing out OOT-ers on their last day here, but everyone understood.
We got back from Jamaica recently, the real honeymoon, where we were at Couples Swept Away. We had an awesome time - it was practically all R&R, which we desperately needed. The resort was beautiful, the staff was soooo nice and helpful, and the food and drinks were great. A couple of things were slightly irritating...it's a 'green' resort, so they don't offer some water sports that are considered bad for the environment. Because of that, there were jetski-ers circling the Swept Away beach in the water, constantly asking if you wanted to jetski. It was like being by the taxis at a LIRR station. OMG!!
Also - we chose a type of room that was in the back of the property, nearest the road. I woke up constantly, all night, the entire week to cars speeding and their radios blaring. DH didn't, though. I'd definitely need to be on the water if we were to stay there again. Otherwise, it was great!
