Wedding Review - Riviera at Massapequa, Flowers by Brian, Faze 4 La Blanc Brothers Band, RK Bridal, and more! (7/10/11)

Our Wedding - Riviera at Massapequa, July 10, 2011

The day I married Jason was the best day of my life! It took awhile, but waiting until I found him was well worth the wait – I’m so happy to be his wife and to have him as my husband… could not ask for anything more!

Our wedding day far surpassed anything I could have ever imagined – but we had to work hard to make that happen. The months leading up to the big day were filled with time-consuming projects, numerous phone calls to vendors, running errands, and monitoring our budget; and as stressful as it was at times, I truly believe that it was because of all these things that our wedding was so incredible. More than that, though, was having a supportive fiancé who was by my side every step of the way.

Our Engagement
We were in Manhattan, walking through Bryant Park, when we got to a beautiful fountain. It's not unlike me to carry a camera wherever I go, so I asked a random stranger to take a picture of us in front of the fountain. After she snapped our picture, Jason turned to me and said, 'Something's missing from this picture.' Not having the foggiest idea what he was talking about, I looked at him, then at the stranger - who was just as clueless as I was. He again said that something was missing from the picture, as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a beautiful, diamond engagement ring and asked me to marry him. Of course I said YES! The woman realized that Jason had just proposed to me, and she started snapping away as everyone in the park was clapping and cheering.
After calling our families and friends, it was clear to us just how much everybody approved of our engagement. One of my sisters summed it up best by saying, 'I'm not just happy that you're engaged; I'm happy that you're engaged to Jason.'

Wedding Rings – Zales & Kay Jewelers
As much as I appreciate the beauty in many rings I’ve seen, for my engagement ring I wanted simplicity – a round solitaire. After visiting numerous jewelers and learning everything possible about diamonds, Jason found at Zales this ring that sparkled more than any other he had seen. I could not have asked for anything more – it’s timeless, stunning and I LOVE it!!! I drove Jason crazy trying to find just the right wedding band to go with it, though. I was torn between getting a channel set (which at the time I thought would best complement the e-ring), and getting the band that I REALLY wanted (but that I wasn’t sure would match as well). In the end, I went with the one I really wanted and am so happy that I did. When it came time to order the ring, we purchased it from Kays and had them size it down. When it came back, the shape of the ring was oval-ish (flatter on top, where the diamonds are). Apparently, when they size down, they don’t want to touch the top and disturb the diamonds, so they end up reshaping only the metal. Well, their customer service was great – they offered to custom-order the ring so that it would be made exactly to my finger’s size. With the new ring, I am one happy customer! As for Jason… he made ring shopping just a little too easy for me. He likes simplicity, too, and the task of ring-shopping was effortless. He found a very basic band he liked at Zales and that was it – all done!!!

Wedding Venue – Riviera at Massapequa
Our first choice was a wedding venue located in New Jersey overlooking the Manhattan skyline. It was everything we *thought* we wanted and we were bummed when it didn’t work out. But everything happens for a reason, right? So we put the word out to family & friends that we were looking for a wedding venue – preferably on the water, one-wedding-at-a-time, and that would be within our budget. One of our friends had recommended The Riviera, which we had never heard of. When I first called there, I spoke with Vickie, who I clicked with right from the start. She is a total sweetheart – upbeat, extremely personable, and she devoted plenty of time to answering my questions. Jason and I visited the Riviera that weekend, and we knew as soon as we walked into the place that it was exactly what we wanted. The room is ideal for a wedding size of 120-160 (we had 140 guests). It’s full of character and a great deal of charm… the room has exposed brick on the inside, large windows overlooking the Great South Bay, carpeting and hardwood floors, and paintings on the walls. The outdoor space is what really sold it for us. I wanted more than anything to have our ceremony outside with the water behind us. On our wedding day, the sun was shining, humidity was low, and the flowers were in full bloom – could not have asked for a more perfect day! Fortunately for us, there was no wedding booked before ours, so Jason and I were able to go to the Riviera early for our “reveal” and take all of our formal photos before any of our guests arrived. Our maitre‘d was Anthony and he was terrific – kept everything under control. We were served plenty of food throughout the night (no one left hungry, that’s for sure!), and everything was delicious. I do want to mention to any Jewish brides out there, that although we mentioned to the banquet managers during our meetings about doing a blessing over the challah, on the day of our wedding there was no challah. We were able to make do with dinner rolls, but if you require challah on your wedding day, definitely make sure to confirm that they’ll supply it for you (or arrange it yourself). That “oopsie” aside, everything was great – we spent most of the night out on the dance floor and talking with our guests and were truly able to enjoy our special day. What I really liked about having our wedding at the Riviera is that very few of our guests had ever been to or even heard of it; they all seemed to really like this “hidden gem.” Jason and I feel so fortunate to have discovered the Riviera – we could not have chosen a more perfect venue for our wedding.

Rehearsal Dinner Venue – Hilton Huntington/Melville
Jason’s parents graciously offered to host this dinner. With so many out-of-town guests, we held it in one of the ballrooms at the Hilton Hotel, where most of our guests were staying (we had 70 people attend). The food was served buffet style – great variety and amount of food. For added ambiance, Jason’s mom had Flowers by Brian create centerpieces for each table (more about FBB later on) – they were beautiful! The dinner was great (I don’t even remember all the food, but it was all good!) I’m just really glad that Jason’s parents were happy with how everything turned out – the dinner, the flowers – it set the stage for a wonderful weekend!

Wedding Gown – Blue by Enzoani (Canberra)
My mom and I went dress shopping at RK Bridal – boy do they have a huge selection! While we waited for a consultant, we looked through racks and racks of dresses to try on. After about a half hour, Sheryl came over and introduced herself (I had seen her working the floor and was hoping she’d be my sales consultant – you could tell that she knows her stuff, and on top of that, she just seemed really happy to be working there and to enjoy her job). I showed her pictures of dresses I liked, and she said that while they didn’t carry the dress that I *really* wanted, she had a dress in mind that would be perfect – and it was!!! It was a Blue by Enzoani dress, and I loved it from the minute I tried it on. I tried on about 10 other dresses and compared each one to the Enzoani, and each time it was a no-brainer – Enzoani was the clear winner. Aside from my really loving the look of the dress, it was also the most flattering for my body – I felt slim in it even though it was somewhat poufy at the bottom (a style I thought would not look good on my “pear shaped” body). And I especially loved the uniqueness of the pleated asymmetrical crumb-catcher neckline. Best of all, this dress was SOOOO comfortable! Actually, I suppose best of all was seeing Jason’s reaction to me in it on our wedding day – he LOVED it!

Dress Alterations – RK Bridal
I really don’t want to spend much time on them because it burns me up just thinking about it. Basically, I spent a whole lot of money and got nothing but grief from them. First I should say that my dress needed very little alterations – only the hem and a little in the bust (plus the bustle). I had 3 fittings – apparently they have very high turnover in the alterations department, and each time I went there was a new seamstress helping me. At my final fitting, we noticed a stain of some sort on the bodice of my dress (as well as on the back). As if seeing it wasn’t bad enough, what really got me was that they had the audacity to question if perhaps I got makeup on it or something??? First off, it was so NOT makeup – that much I’m sure of. I don’t know how I kept so calm, cool, and collected because I was SOOOO angry that they would even insinuate that. I told them that I had never, NOT ONCE, been unsupervised with that dress (I was always accompanied into the dressing room with one of the employees there), AND that the dress was never put on or off me from the top – the girl ALWAYS had me step into it. So no, it was certainly not makeup or anything else from me that got on that dress. They were able to get the stain out and later apologized for what had happened, but to this day I am still quite bitter about the whole experience. On top of that incident, the actual work they did was horrible. At my final fitting, they said they still needed to take my dress up a half inch or so, which they would work on and have ready for my final pick-up. When I picked up the dress, I did a once-over to check for any more stains, but did not try it on again (BIG mistake!!) Well, when I finally did put my dress on (on my wedding day) we discovered that they forgot to hem the lining – the lining hung lower than the material on the outside of the dress! Needless to say, we had no choice but to find a pair of scissors and start cutting it ourselves. What else could we have done?!? After we cut it, it was fine so I won’t make a stink about that. I had read negative reviews about RK Bridal’s alterations dept in the past, but thought that the convenience would be worth it in the end (at the time, I was living in Manhattan, not too far from them). Boy was I wrong. This is the ONLY vendor I used that I would NEVER-EVER use again (I would use their sales dept, just not their alterations).

Headpiece & Veil – Edward Berger (Style #2133) from Macys
I wanted a simple, two-tiered veil with a finished edge – found one at Macys and ordered it in Diamond White to match my gown – it was perfect! It was a few weeks before my wedding when I went looking for a headpiece. I found this Edward Berger one (Style #2133) that I LOVED, and I really, REALLY wanted, but it turned out that if I ordered it, it wouldn’t be in in time for my wedding. So the manager offered me the sample for 50% off. I ended up getting it and am SO HAPPY that I did… it was exactly what I envisioned and was perfect for how I wanted to wear my hair. Plus, it had lots and LOTS of bling!!

Shoes – Dyeables (Lovely)
I just wanted something comfortable for my wedding day, so I found three pairs of shoes on Shoebuy.com and hoped that one of them would work. The “Lovely” Dyeables were perfect – so comfy (2 ¼” heel) and I wore them all day/night without any problems. As for Shoebuy.com… they issued a return label for the other two pairs – no questions asked.

Jewelry
I knew that I wanted a blingy headpiece so in order to avoid bling overkill, I wanted something delicate, “wedding-ish,” simple, and beautiful, and that would not be competing with the bodice of the dress. So one day, I was in Off-Saks and the last thing on my mind was DOJ, but I passed by a jewelry counter and absolutely fell in love with these earrings and necklace – they were everything I wanted – sparkly without being gaudy, and definitely fit for a bride. I justified the purchase by knowing that I would be able to wear them again. One thing I’m glad I did is to try on the necklace while at my final fitting. The length of the chain was a tad bit too long (the pendant hung too close to the neckline of the dress), so I went to a jeweler and had him take about 1” off the chain. It was somewhat last minute, but they fixed it in time, and it was perfect for my wedding day.

Bridesmaids Dresses – Jasmine: “Belsoie”
One of my sisters recommended we go to Bridal Reflections in Carle Place, the same location where she had purchased her wedding gown. It turned out our experience was quite different than what she, as a bride, had experienced. We pretty much had to fend for ourselves – there were way too many customers, and too few consultants to go around. Regardless, we looked through their dresses and thought they had a great selection. The Jasmine “Belsoie” stood out to us (the bodice complemented my bridal gown) and once the girls tried it on, it was a no brainer – it was definitely the dress to get. Due to the poor customer service, we decided to give our business to another store (My Daughter’s Wedding III) and purchased all 6 dresses from them. As for the dresses – we ordered them in Peony – so pretty for a summer wedding! The dress flattered each girls’ body, and those who said they would add straps if we had chosen a strapless dress, opted not to do so after trying this one on and finding it very supportive.

Flower Girl Dresses – Davids Bridal
All three of my nieces got their dresses at David’s Bridal. Each girl chose whatever style she wanted in the color cocoa. My sisters customized my nieces’ dresses by using fabric from their bridesmaids’ dresses for their sashes. It seemed to really tie all the colors together and looked so good in pictures.
Children’s Tuxedos – JCPenney.com
My sisters ordered my nephews’ tuxes online through JCPenney.com. They were Van Heusen, single-breasted tuxedos with pleated button-front shirts and bow ties. ADORABLE!!! And they fit great, too… just a bit of hemming and they were good to go!

Tuxedos - Mens Wearhouse
I went with Jason to the location in Manhattan to pick out the tuxes. We selected the Calvin Klein Two-Button tuxes with the “Geometrics Black Vest” for the boys, and the “Geometrics Silver Vest for Jason; all got the solid Euro tie to match. When the tuxes were ready to be picked up, there were a couple of issues. Sizing was off for a couple of them, so it was a pain in the butt for people to have to make another trip to the store, but in the end they looked fine. The day of the wedding, my dad went to put on his cufflinks, but it turned out one was broken. While it was annoying that on my wedding day I was on the phone making calls to the store, I will say that I was really happy with their customer service. Someone from the Mens Wearhouse in Massapequa went to the Riviera to drop off a new pair of cufflinks.

Flowers – Flowers by Brian (FBB)
The pictures do not do justice – FBB far exceeded all of my expectations! My entire experience working with them was wonderful (Joseph was our contact). It was a month before the wedding and I called FBB at 5:15 on a Saturday night asking if someone was available to meet with us. We were told that Joseph was finishing up with a client, but that he’d stay around if we could get there within the hour. By the time we arrived, he had already worked a full day, yet he was so upbeat and enthusiastic; he ended up working with us until after 8pm. We were fully confident in them and so we signed the contract that evening. At my second mtg we reviewed everything we had discussed at our first mtg, and then chose flowers for all the bouquets, corsages, boots, etc. I have to say, I had such a blast working with Joseph! I didn’t really have a “vision” – I just knew I wanted pink flowers – but the rest I just left up to him. It’s his area of expertise; he knows his stuff, that’s for sure! My final visit to FBB was the day before my wedding when I went to get a sneak peak of my bouquets and one of the centerpieces – GORGEOUS!!! The following day (our wedding day) we saw how they decorated the gazebo. Well, they completely outdid themselves - the gazebo was decorated more beautifully than I ever thought it could be. Working with Joseph was THE most fun I had with any vendor… he is a man who truly enjoys what he does for a living, he is extremely passionate, he is an expert in his field, and most important – he made flower visits enjoyable!

Uplighting – Flowers by Brian (contracted out)
Admittedly, I had no clue what uplighting was until I came to LIW! After seeing pictures other brides posted of the Riviera with uplighting, I was hooked – I really wanted those lights!!! We ended up going through FBB, but they contract out with an outside vendor. I originally wanted to get amber lights that would change in the night to pink, but as soon as I arrived at the venue, the pink was on and it matched with the flowers, so we just kept it pink the whole night. I believe the Riviera is beautiful with or without the lighting – but for us, it offered that extra touch that we wanted.

Cake
Some of you brides probably would’ve freaked if you had my cake – the top of it looked like it was going to topple over! I still thought it looked pretty, regardless (and it tasted great!) Then again, the cake was inclusive with our venue (don’t even know which bakery it came from) and we probably spent all of 2 minutes deciding on it, so I certainly wasn’t going to spend more than that letting it bother me!

Band – La Blanc Brothers Band (A Faze 4 Orchestras Band)
Totally AWESOME - they rock! We found out on the day of our wedding that La Blanc Brothers had actually played at one of our guests’ weddings the year before – small world! That couple was so psyched that we were using the same band because they said that they were amazing (I wasn’t at their wedding, so I wouldn’t have known). Well, amazing is an understatement – they knew exactly what to play to keep the energy up. Just a bit about me – I’m not the type of bride to give a “play list” and a “do not play list”… I just gave them the necessary list of songs (first dance, parent dances, etc) and let them do everything else.

Makeup – Piera Canu
I have never in my life looked in a mirror and felt more beautiful than I did on my wedding day. Piera is a well-established make-up artist with an extensive portfolio. To help with budgeting, I had NO makeup trials whatsoever (with her or anybody else) and spent my entire makeup budget solely on Piera the day of my wedding – and she was worth every penny. She also did makeup for my sisters, my SIL, and my MIL and EVERYONE was so happy with her work. I discovered Piera through an ‘08 LIW bride who had raved about her… she earned every bit of praise she received!

Hair – Deana and her sister (I just realized, I don’t even know her sister’s name!!!)
Because I have thin hair, I wasn’t sure what hairstyle would work best. Since our wedding was in July, I opted for a full updo to alleviate any worry of frizziness or having sweat from my neck get onto my hair; plus, with the neckline of my dress, I just thought an updo would look best. I wasn’t sure if it would flatter my face, though, to have my hair completely pulled back, but with extensions in I was able to get the extra fullness I needed to make it work. My cousin’s wife recommended Deana to me, so I went to her for a trial. I brought with me my veil and the extensions and showed her photos of how I wanted my hair. She did a terrific job replicating what I wanted. For my wedding, I wore the veil above the updo, right behind the headpiece, so basically my hair was covered. And since I kept my veil on all night (I just couldn’t part with it!) no one really got to see the hairstyle. But regardless, because of the way my hair was styled and how full it was, it made the veil poof out like I wanted – so it was all good! Deana and her sister also did the hair of several people in my wedding party.

Photography – Danny Weiss
Danny is a photojournalist who enjoys capturing the authenticity of the events of the day as they unfold. We booked him for our engagement shoot, wedding day, and day-after shoot. He is personable and easy to work with – and has a great eye for good shots. He was very responsive to my inquiries both before and after the wedding and seems to genuinely care that his brides are happy. Other than the formal shots of family members, I did not provide him with a list of “must have” photos. He captured so many great moments – all unstaged – which is why I think they come across as so “real”. There is one formal shot I requested that he forgot to take – my Maids of Honor (my sisters) and me – but at the end of the day, he got so many terrific shots that I can’t complain. Most photos in this review are his work.

Videographer – Ray Estrada (Timeless Films, NY)
Ray was very easy to work with on our wedding day; we never felt like there was a camera in our faces – hardly knew he was there. The video captured the important events of the day and we are happy with how it turned out. The only drawback is that one of the songs we had requested did not make it into the final version.

Officiant – Rabbi Eytan Hammerman
Neither Jason or I belong to a synagogue, so when my sister mentioned that her Rabbi is young, fun, outgoing, and just an overall great guy, we contacted him and set up our first meeting. He lives up in Mahopac (Westchester) and we went up there to meet with him several times, talking about ourselves, marriage, and the wedding. He led us through the requirements of the ceremony and was quick to respond to our emails/phone calls. The ceremony itself was beautiful. By the time of our wedding, he was able to speak genuinely about each of us separately and as a couple, and we were honored that he had taken the time to write such beautiful words. One of my favorite parts of the ceremony was when he asked Jason and me to turn around to face all of our guests and to celebrate everyone who was there with us. It was truly a remarkable moment to stand there and look out at all of our friends and family who were with us on the most important day of our lives. He did such a great job and we are so happy that my sister recommended him. And even though he is conservative, we never once felt like he was passing judgment for our personal religious choices (we are reform, do not keep kosher, and do not observe the Sabbath). With that said, we very much looked forward to our meetings with him, and to learning more about Judaism in marriage.

Transportation (Shuttles, Packard) – All Star Limousine
We dealt with Debbie, and while it took her awhile to respond at times, she was completely on top of everything. I say this because we had made changes to the types of vehicles we used, the times they were picking up and dropping off, and she did not miss a beat. The cars were great, the drivers were friendly and arrived on time, and they had no problems with directions. We also had a 1938 Packard which was AWESOME!! It was just a cool car – definitely not your typical antique car, that’s for sure!

Transportation (Coach Bus) – A Touch of Class Coach
For transportation, we were looking for a service that was reliable, a bus that could get us from Point A to Point B without any problems, and was budget-friendly. I was a little hesitant to use this company at first because no one on here had ever mentioned them or used them. Well, I called Junior and he was so friendly and accommodating. We booked a 55 passenger bus to transport guests from the hotel to the reception site and back. On the day of our wedding, the driver arrived on time and things could not have run any smoother. Junior was easy to work with, he revised our contract without a problem when, a month before our wedding, we realized we needed only one bus instead of two.

Computer Calligraphy (Envelope Printing) - Inkspun
I used Bill Scher, from Inkspun, for the addressing of my envelopes. The price was excellent, the printing looked great and I have no complaints with how they turned out. However, he made several errors, including shipping ALL my invitations to my parents' house (where the RSVP's were being sent) even though I specifically stated, in writing, they were to be sent to my apartment. It fell on us to then get them to my apartment so we could stuff them. Additionally, it was a challenge – to say the least – to get Bill to print and send out two additional invites (he did send them, eventually). Whenever I called or emailed to check on the status, he’d say he was working on them. I had a couple other issues with his service which is why I would think twice before using him again. However, others on here have had great experiences, so my *bad* experience may just be a fluke.

DIY Items (Invitations, Escort Cards, Menus, Programs – PaperandMore.com)
PaperandMore.com was recommended by a lot of brides, so I figured I’d give them a try. I was very happy with the quality of their papers, the ease of their deliveries, and their product selection. When I first started using them, I remember being able to call them on the phone and have questions answered in “real time.” However, I believe that now the contact is via a “Contact Us” form – it’s less personal, and I don’t like it so much, but it wouldn’t stop me from using them again in the future.

OOT Baggies & Supplies – Costco & BagsandBowsonline.com
This trip to Costco was fun!! We just started piling tons of snacks, chips, sweets, and treats into our cart. The hardest part was that I had all the “extras” sitting in my apartment for a few weeks before the wedding. It wasn’t easy seeing all those goodies on a daily basis when you’re trying to fit into a wedding gown! As for the bags, we ordered them online from Bags & Bows (Item: Birds and Flowers) – very pretty!

Picture Frames – Jack’s 99 Cent Store
The name implies that everything in the store would be 99cents – but it’s not. Regardless, their prices are good. We ended up getting all of our picture frames from them (they ran about $8 each).

Cardbox – Door County Woodworks
Other brides had posted pictures of their birdhouse cardboxes and since Jason and I had just purchased a new home, we thought it would only be fitting to get a house for our cardbox. Placed next to the cardbox were “New Home” cards so our guests could have our new address and number. The delivery did take awhile (fortunately we had placed our order well enough in advance so that this didn’t pose a problem – though it was a tad bit annoying to receive an email saying it was ready to ship and a month later to be told that he was still working on it), but the birdhouse itself arrived in perfect condition and was even better than we expected. We actually have it on display in our new home, right under our Ketubah!

Favors – Patsy’s Pasta Sauce, Wooden Spoons, “Love Story” cards
One of our favorite restaurants (and the one where we celebrated our engagement) is Patsy’s on 56th Street. For our favors, we arranged with the restaurant to purchase small jars of their sauce. We also included wooden spoons with our names and wedding date printed on the handle (Cornerstonepromos.com). Lastly, we included a card from tinyprints.com that included our love story (where we met, why we love Patsy’s and a “Thank you.”) There was one issue we learned about after the wedding – and that’s that the airport confiscated many of the sauces (and we had a LOT of out of town guests!!!)

Flower Baskets and Ring Pillow
I ordered these on ebay from judith8323. She is a top-rated seller (5,000+ ratings), has 100% positive feedback, and was very responsive to all communication. She did not have in stock the items I wanted, but within two weeks she had ordered them for me and sent them my way. They arrived in excellent condition; she was wonderful to work with.

Jewish Ceremony Items
Yamulkas – We ordered black with a white lining and silver writing. The silver text didn’t show up so well on the white fabric, but I think they were fine.
Ketubah (MPArtworks.com) – Considering we are not very religious people, we actually put a good amount of time into selecting our Ketubah. We selected “Golden Strands” from Claire Carter and had it canvas wrapped. We LOVE it and it hangs like a piece of artwork in our house.
Kiddish Cup – this we borrowed from my parents
Glass to break – My sister picked up a red lightbulb for us. I used to think we had to use a “real” glass, but the lightbulb was great!

Gifts – Bridesmaids, Moms, Flower girls
I was at the Kate Spade outlet down in Atlanta and found these fun, fashion totes for my bridesmaids. The salesgirl needed to get approval from the mgr to let me order six of them (there’s a cap on two), but she approved it no problem. Additionally, I gave my two sisters (my MOH’s) earrings to wear for the wedding. For the moms, I knew I wanted to get them jewelry, and I was in Macys and found these beautiful pearl necklaces by Majorica; they LOVED them! For the flower girls, I ordered terry cloth toiletry/cosmetic bags embroidered with their names (perfect for them to take to sleepaway cam) and for my youngest flower girl, I purchased a cute Barbie electric guitar.

Gifts – Groomsmen
Jason took care of these. He purchased golf clubs for all his boys which they used for his bachelor party weekend.

Some of my favorite pics (including our 'reveal')...

I know how much I appreciated all the reviews when I was planning my wedding, so I hope this can help some of you as well. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions!

Best wishes to all you future brides!!!

I bought it online... not sure exactly which vendor, but if you google 'Picture Perfect Cake Topper' you'll find plenty of online stores that carry it (including David's Bridal & Amazon).
