Re: QOTD -Friday 9/5/03

oh shamma, i don't think it's too much either, but it's talking DH into spending a few hundred - that's the hard part. esp since we just spent all that on the wedding, he's afraid to spend money. but he recognizes that we need one too.

We a have a big fireproof safe that DH got from a friend. He works for a moving company and someome left it in the back of a truck they rented. It's big I can fit inside it. We keep all our important paper work in it.

Re: QOTD -Friday 9/5/03

We have some important papers and all our good jewelry in a deposit box at the bank. Fireproof safe is next on the list.

Don't forget about having an emergency evacuation plan too - what would you grab if you had just a few minutes, or maybe a half hour or hour to evacuate. Happens all the time to people in the path of a hurricane but don't forget the LI Pine Barrens fires a few years ago, and even last summer several houses near Connetquot State Park were threatened... Plan your evacuation kit - phone numbers not just for friends but insurance agents and policy numbers, doctors and dentist numbers for all the family, prescription information and so on. We have one designated shelf that has a first aid kit, flashlights, lanterns, battery operated TV and radio with extra batteries and we're adding to it.

You may want to store family photos and albums and other important memorabilia in a cabinet near the front door so it's easy to grab and everyone knows what's important. During evacuations in the west during forest fires you see people putting replacable items, like TV's, in a pick up - know what's important and irreplaceable and plan now what you'd grab if you only had a few minutes. Should it ever happen you won't regret it. I'm still getting organized with this - I too want my wedding album accessible, but right now it's in a back bedroom in a dresser drawer. I had to think for a minute to even remember that! Better to have those important things in a designated spot to be grabbed in an emergency exit situation.

Thanks for the wake-up call on this!

Re: QOTD -Friday 9/5/03

For the girls that are worried about their proofs - couldnt you get them again from your photographers?

Not that the box isnt a good ideas - its a great idea but the proofs seem easy to replace.

Evacution plan? If house is burning, get out front door. If front door is burning, go out back door. If both doors are burning put head between legs and kiss ass goodbye. Can you tell that my house is smaller than most of yours? hahah

Re: QOTD -Friday 9/5/03

Actually, when I was talking about evacuation I was refering to a situation like what happened when Connetquot State Park was on fire last summer and the houses across the street on Sycamore were watering down their houses while the fire department tried to keep the flames from crossing the road. You hear about it more often in CA and out west, where they tell people they have a half hour to get out of their house. Or if you're in the city it could be the brownstone two houses down that's on fire, and you might want to have a plan to grab the important stuff as you leave.

Shamma - just wondering how you made out at BJ's? Did they have a safe that met your requirements? How was the price?

Thanks!
