New to the forum. Wedding Venue rant.

Hey everyone. I'm just starting my planning and trying, with all my might, to find a venue. I am looking to do something on the east end/north fork. So far only one venue has called me back and they were wonderful and I would be happy to have my wedding there, but I still want more options. I've left messages and called a bunch of places (that say on their website that they do weddings) and no one has called me back. I've resorted to emailing them for one final measure. How do these places stay in business without calling people back? Or is it that they're just not hurting for business, so weddings are low priority? I still feel like it's rude/bad business and I don't like starting my planning on this kind of foot. Oh well. Sorry to start off my time here with a rant!

Also, if anyone has any advice as to how this website works, I'd be delighted to hear it. I've been trying to find where to edit the date of my wedding and I can't find it, all the links in the profile page seem disabled. I'm not getting married in June 2014 ;)

Re: New to the forum. Wedding Venue rant.

I have been engaged since March 1st, and I've already seen 7 places. I've had no problem at all making appointments with everyone I've been interested in seeing, so I'm surprised you're having to leave messages at all! What time are you calling? A lot of these places are only around in the evenings, and you might do better if you call in the afternoon (between 12 and 4?) on a Thursday or Friday, because they are less likely to have an event going on at that time. I find a lot of banquet managers are off on Tuesdays and Wednesday, but there is normally someone around to answer the phones.

Also, this site is really great. You can get some estimates of price ranges too, if you go to the Reception Guide. It isn't completely accurate, as it depends on the season and time, etc, but it's very useful to find a decent ballpark range.

I had no problems getting in touch with venues via e-mail, but I was looking at typical wedding venues.. are you looking at a-typical venues? What type of venue are you looking for? And this site recently updated and they're dragging @$$ with the final touches so profiles can't be edited right now.

Where are you looking? I have a few quotes because I grew up on the east end and wanted to get married out there, but it turned out to be too expensive. Let me know which venues you are looking at, I may be able to help! :)

So far the only place that has been responsive has been Martha Clara Vineyard. I contacted a new-ish place called Breeze Hill Farm & Preserve, who apparently have a dedicated event planner. I have left a voicemail and called twice with no response (message was left last week, with additional calls this week). The other place I called/emailed with no response is Salt Air Farm, who have a pretty extensive wedding planning website app integrated on their site. One other place I emailed today, so I'm not TOO antsy to hear back yet, but they're called Kontokosta Winery.

I'll try calling at different times, but I don't want to harass them either, haha.

Cets1290, I'm not getting married next month!! haha. I made my profile in haste and I don't know why I made the date 2014, I meant to make it 2015. Since no venue is booked, the date isn't even set in stone, but I'm looking for Spring 2015.

I will send info for Martha Clara in the AM! I have it! My sister got married there in 2006, and that actually was my grandfather's farm before he sold it to Entermann (owners of MC). My mom grew up on that farm! Across the street is Hallockville Farm Museum, they also hold weddings in their barn or tented and I have the info for that if you're interested as well. My great grandparent's house is on that property! So excited for you to be considering these places - they have so much meaning to me :)

I was going to contact Salt Air, but read they can only hold weddings during the day. I may also have some quotes for a few of the other wineries. FM me you're email address and I will forward you everything that I have! It gets to be super expensive to hold a wedding at one of these places because you have to bring everything in- caterer, bathrooms, linens, tents, tables, etc etc. if you're looking for a caterer, definitely check out Matt Kar from Christopher Michael catering. He owns Jamesport Country Kitchen and Jamesport Manor Inn. He's awesome and so is his food!
Hope this helps! :)

Thanks so much for all the info! Salt Air has to turn the music off at 9pm, but their website says that wedding festivities can continue in the form of a bonfire, they just can't allow amplified music past that time. This wouldn't bother me too much, particularly if it was in late June. I have some ideas for an outdoor wedding with activities for children (we have about 25 kids that will be at our wedding). Interestingly enough, their sole caterer is Christopher Michael and I took a look at some of the menus and it seemed impressive.

I liked that Martha Clara includes a bunch of amenities such as the tables and chairs and it also seemed like the coordinator is well-connected to the vendors. I emailed Catering by A Small Affair and they spoke highly of MCV. It's expensive, but it seemed worth it. I, of course, am looking for the best bargain, but I have a certain idea in my mind (rustic but chic).

the vineyards is a good place- not sure how big your list is, but my friend just went to a wedding there and she said it's gorgeous

also, giorgios in baiting hollow, but i dont think it's like right on a vineyard like the other place is- still a gorgeous place

be careful over other vineyards they aren't specifically wedding venues because some of them can do a pretty tent set-up, but they make the guests use porta potties- the vineyards is the only one i know of that is a specific wedding venue and is also a gorgeous vineyard- i looked into the wineries for my wedding initially, but i decided on a place in nassau county to be closer to guests and i needed a really big place (225 guests)

The vineyards and girgios are more like catering halls, so if you want to do rustic, I wouldn't consider them. The porta potties that people rent are more like trailers with bathrooms. They aren't gross at all! Very clean and you don't know you're in a porta potty once you're inside.

Also have info on Rafael. It's very $$ but they do have in house catering. I'll send it all over once I'm on a computer :)

I think that this is also still the off-season for the north fork, so it may take some places longer to get back to you, aside from the really big vineyards. But Kontokosta is GORGEOUS! FH and I went there in February and we absolutely loved it. A little bit expensive, but well worth the long trip for the view alone. I hope they get back to you quickly!

This happened to me too with a few venues, and maybe I'm just very impatient, or just know how I operate in terms of returning potential customers phone calls.. but it ruled out these venues for me. A wedding is so expensive that I refuse to chase someone down to give them thousands of dollars. The venue we ended up booking at this happened with at first, and I made a rule for myself that if it happened again they're out because I will not tolerate un-returned e-mails and phone calls. On season, off season, there is no excuse in my opinion. Luckily the girl I spoke to when I followed up is who I've been dealing with since and she's been great. I wish I had some information as far as venues, but we looked in Nassau. Best of luck!

RE:New to the forum. Wedding Venue rant.

@mab30
Hi there, I saw your comments from a few years back and am wondering if you still have information about the venues you mentioned. I am just starting out planning my wedding for next fall and am looking for a venue on the east end. I've looked at Salt Air Farm, Hallockville, and Martha Clara. Any help or suggestions you could give me would be hugely appreciated!!! Thank you,

Christine
