What are the roles and responsibilities of a Godmother???

I'm going to be a Godmother!!! And, my DH is going to be the godfather!

But, we don't even have our own kids yet, so we have no idea in the world what we need/should do as godparents.

The baby is due in July and it's a boy. He will be the 2nd child of my cousin and her husband.

HELP, MOMS!!!

Re: What are the roles and responsibilities of a Godmother???

Congratulations! This is such an honor for you both.

I feel that the role of godparents are someone that you would trust with your child in the event something happens to the parents. The godparent would then play the parents part. Its a hard decision for a parent to chose a godparent to whom they have much trust to raise your child.

As for responsibilities of the christening day. The godmother purchases the christening outfit, dresses the baby and prepares him/her for the ceremony. The godfather would pay a dontation to the church.

I'm trying to remember what my childrens' godparents did for them. Its been 22 years so some things just aren't coming into mind at this point. I also remember us (parents) and godparents had to go to the church a few months before the christening for some sort of class on what godparents expectations would be.

Good luck to you all and again, congratulations. This is wonderful!

Re: What are the roles and responsibilities of a Godmother???

Yes, MomNeedsTissues has filled you in on a lot of the resposibilities of Godparents. I was told as a Godparent it was my responsibility to see to the needs of the children in their religious upbringing. That if something happened to the parents, it was my resposibility to make sure that the parents wishes were carried out as to who was to raise the children (not necessarily me) but that they were also exposed to the parents beliefs and religious training. I hope this helps, and I'm sure that you have been given a great honor for a reason. Those parents must think you and DH are very special people!

Good point Laurel. I left out the religious aspect of being a godparent.

Its so much fun shopping for that special christening outfit, but expensive. Its so worth the honor!

Re: What are the roles and responsibilities of a Godmother???

I was just a godmother to my niece. First off make sure the baby doesn't have a christening gown handed down or such (my niece had one from her grandfather). At the christening I held the baby as the priest annointed her with water. He asks if we will help to raise the baby in the Catholic faith. I bought my niece a tiny gold cross and gave her a bond (& a small cross for her room).

fm me w/ any other q's.

Re: What are the roles and responsibilities of a Godmother???

You are responsible for spoiling the child! As a godmother, I've always tried to plan special 'just godmother and goddaughter' days. She's 10 now and we've gone to concerts, the circus, had sleepovers, etc. When she was about 5, and all her friends were starting to be flowergirls, she was dying for me to get married. I always teased her and said, no matter how old she is when I get married, I'm going to make her be my FG. So, here we are and she's the FG! She told me she's double the age of most flowergirls so I told her she could have the title of junior bridesmaid, but she still calls herself the FG!

Good luck - it's a fun role!

Re: What are the roles and responsibilities of a Godmother???

I'm 23 and my godparents always make sure to send me birthday cards and at leasta little gift, usually 'goddaughter ' cards. Even though they're all juvenile..LOL. It still make me feel really special!
