I know most of us are animal lovers...

But…would you do this…..

My coworker’s daughter lives and teaches English in Morocco. She and her husband have 2 Cornish Rex cats who are like their babies (and they do not intend on having any human babies). Well, one of her cats got out and apparently fell off of the roof of their home and broke both his hind legs and may have some other injuries (his abdomen is swelling). They didn’t find him until almost a day later (poor baby!). Well, due to the lack of vet care in Morocco, her husband drove the cat 6 hours away to the nearest vet who could not help him. So, they are now on a flight to Paris to get the cat some help! As you can imagine they have already spent $$$$ on this episode. NOW – there’s a chance they might send the cat back here to the states for more treatment and rehab next week (if needed). They have searched for a medical helicopter to escort him and its 40k! Its not like they’re rich or anything…so this is def. something that’s gonna hit them hard financially. Dh said he would never pay that much for our dogs. Would you guys? I mean I love my dogs, but WOW!

if we were super super rich we would do it in a heartbeat but thats not our reality so no way could we afford to spend that kind of money

as much as i love animals, i don't think i could spend that kind of money.

i'd definitely take the 6 hour drive if it meant my pet would have a better chance ... and i'm sure i'd spend a bunch of money to try to fix him/her ... but i think my max would be $1-2k.

so sad about your friends' cat though ... i hope they're able to treat him!

I would do whatever it takes to help my cats.

I have veterinary insurance for a reason. A lot of people don't have it for indoor cats...but when I was a kid, we couldn't afford treatment for our cat's UTI and he had such blockage that the only options were surgery or euthanasia. We couldn't afford the surgery so...Cringer was put to sleep. It was one of my worst memories ever, and I swore up and down that when I was an adult, I would not take on pets if I couldn't afford any unforseen emergencies.

Likewise, though...I live in NYC. There are vets EVERYWHERE. If I lived in an area where vets were scarce...I might not have pets because I'd rather NOT have an animal than not be able to treat it if something were to happen.

Bringing an animal overseas or from a foreign country into the US usually means that it needs to be quarantined for some time before the owners get it back...do they know that?

I never really thought about spending an extraordinary amount of money for vet care, but I would honestly max out credit cards for it.

I don't know if I would do that for a person though.

Oh I totally understand that! When my ferrets were alive (omg I miss them!!!) I accidently stepped on one of them (she was under a blanket and I didnt know she was loose). I thought I really damaged her because she barely moved afterwards. So, I RUSHED her to the Animal 911 place and literally put her and my credit card on the counter and said 'I dont care what you have to do or how much its gonna cost, pleaseeee fix her!!!!' She was OK though, just stunned. Ha!

No, I couldn't do that. Even if I really wanted to.
