Opinions needed: Thinking of surprising DH with a trip to Disney for his 30th!

Has anyone ever surprised their DH with a trip before? Or been surprised with a trip? How does it work logistically? Its easy for me in that he works for his dad so securing the time off is simple...but he's not so good with surprises/not the best traveler. He does LOVE Disney and will be overjoyed to go....and I really really want it to be a surprise. When do I tell him? Help me out with this!!!

Re: Opinions needed: Thinking of surprising DH with a trip to Disney for his 30th!

Well I've never been surprised with a trip, but I was completely TRICKED.

We had planned a cruise out of Ft Lauderdale but decided we'd go to Miami for a few days prior. DH (bf at the time) told me he'd take care of all that, all I had to do was book flights on the way back. I didnt ask any questions at all- packed, got to the airport, checked my bags...completely clueless... until I saw the flight board and started yelling at him for getting me to the airport so early for our flight... He goes, 'oh we're not going to Miami, we're going to disney' and runs away..

we got engaged that weekend :)

You can always try to trick your DH. Pretend you're going some place else.. OR plan it...and tell him a few weeks before so he can clear it with work and such. good luck!!

how about you tell him that you have a bday surprise for him and he needs to make himself available on whatever days ... that way, he knows it's a trip but doesn't know where

Re: Opinions needed: Thinking of surprising DH with a trip to Disney for his 30th!

I surprised my DH witha ski tripin January for his 30th. I told him a week before we left over dinner so that he could get his ski gear in order. I had already cleared it with his boss and put it on a credit card that doesn't have his name on it so he wouldn't see the bill.

He was shocked and very excited. We spent the next few days getting all our snow stuff from my mom's his dad's etc. and had a great time!

lol my uncle did something similar to my aunt ... they live in Israel and he told her they're going to Spain for 10 days ... but instead, they were coming to NY to visit .... my aunt's a total ditz at times and totally trusted her hubby 100% - she didn't realize that they weren't going to Spain till the plane was LANDING (it's a 12 hour flight, mind you) ... oh, and she was happy to come to NY but a bit disappointed about not going to Spain ... so be careful if you choose this tricky strategy

Re: Opinions needed: Thinking of surprising DH with a trip to Disney for his 30th!

yeah i don't think tricking him is gonna work because he doesnt love going on trips (unless its disney or vegas....and i dont wanna say vegas and then its disney in case he is disappointed!)

i think i'll have to plan it all (i can arrange his time off from work with his parents) and then tell him a few days in advance. but he may be mad at me for spending the money!!

i found a super reasonable trip package though and i think his parents would be happy to contribute...

i have to keep doing some digging on this

Re: Opinions needed: Thinking of surprising DH with a trip to Disney for his 30th!

I'm struggling with this myself. He also works for his dad so getting time off is nothing, and I have no qualms about waiting until a couple of days before we leave to tell him. My thing is how do I get the money from our joint account without him knowing?!

ok yes so this is what i decided. i'm gonna ask my dad to put it on his CC and then after DH knows about it i'll write him a check

my only OTHER issue holding me back is what if he is super mad at me for spending the money?

Have you guys discussed going on vacation in the near future? If so, then maybe he wont be mad at you for spending the $$

Would you be in Disney ON his birthday or after? I would definitely tell him a few days before if he's not so into suprises. I know I would want a few days to get stuff in order and I like to pack my own stuff.

we typically do one 'big' vacay a year and one or two weekend away type things. the way i'm looking at it we would actually be in disney for the 5 days before his b-day, then home the day before his b-day so we can celebrate with family/friends.

i mean i know we can afford it but he is much stricter with spending than i am.

i also think both my parents and his will offer to throw in a bit since its a big birthday for him.

Welllllllll the money is both of yours now. And it's kind of just an extravagant b-day gift. For us, we take a trip every year so it wouldn't be an issue for us.

Re: Opinions needed: Thinking of surprising DH with a trip to Disney for his 30th!

Crashing - sorry ladies!

I surprised FH w/ a trip to Disney for his birthday last year! It was Labor day weekend so I already knew he'd be out of work, so that helped. And then I just planned out the hotel/travel for both of us, all he had to do was show up and we'd go to Disney

On his actual birthday, I bought a Mickey & Minney stuffed animal, put it in a big birthday bag, and then on a card wrote 'We're going to Disney!'

It took him a few seconds to actually get it but when he found out he totally loved it!

HTH!

What about like a week before you guys leave you can make dinner and leave a card on his plate. Tell him you wanted to give him an early birthday card. In the card you can include the printed itinerary!!
