UPDATE:
that was quick! DH just called, they're giving him painkillers. He had previously not been given pain medication and the vet had said with the natural progression of the cancer, pain meds would be the next step. So, he's going home with meds and we'll see how he reacts to it and if he can be comfortable. Thanks everyone and keep him in your prayers please.

We just returned from vermont and were literally pulling down our block when the call came from MIL that she thinks it's time to say goodbye to Helmut. We went straight there and... it's not good. I said my goodbye, as heartbreaking as it was, and DH dropped me back home. He's going to see if there's anything that can be done for him at the vet, but, there's a good chance Helmut won't be coming home.
Please say a kitty prayer for our big guy.
