Dress Shopping Review- Plus Size

Dress Shopping Review- Plus Size

hey ladies, just wanted to share my first dress shopping experiences because they were very good and i was very happy with the service and people i dealt with...

first stop was Saks Fifth Avenue bridal salon in NYC...i didn't even want to go here because after looking at the designers collections they carry, i wasn't really into their 'looks.' There were only a few designers that made what i was looking for and of course the price isn't listed, so I had no idea what to expect...jill was our bridal consultant and i couldn't have asked for a nicer, knowledgeable person...i told her the dresses i saw and she brought over what they had a few others that were in the same general scheme...granted, the samples were ridiculously small and i am plus sized, i wasn't able to actually get in the gowns, but we held them up and she was so helpful at telling me which designers are better to work with for larger sizes and which to just totally stay away from...in fact they had a trunk show going on and she priced out one of those gowns for me and came back like don't even consider it, shows me the calculator and says that is absurd!! (which it was...) she wasn't pushy and in fact told me to shop around, not to buy on the first appointment....

we then went to bridal reflections on fifth avenue and again, what a pleasureable bunch to work with...at this store, most of the gowns are out on the floor on display so while the bridal consultant took my 'wants' down and showed me some things, i was mostly able to shop for myself, which i like...because i've found i like two very much extremes...something simple with very little on it, but with different textured materials or sort of fully elaborate (just no beading or very little)...

either way, both places were very helpful and surprisingly each place had a dress i loved, both very different from each other...the one at bridal relfections was a st pucchi (http://www.brides.com/wedding-dresses-style/wedding-dresses/gallery/dresses/vendor/designer/stpucchi/detail/235000) but was retailing around 9K before alterations :( and the other was an ulla maija, dress named monet (http://www.ulla-maija.com/) which retails for 5900...now for you girls that are plus size, i have to say, this designer sounds amazing because part of the pricing is an additional 600 for alterations, but here's why...this dress is custom made...they custom take your measurements and body style and fit the dress to you...you meet downtown on 39th street with the dressmakers and they make you a sample muslin (sp?) and then build your dress...and for me, someone plus sized that never proportionally fits into anything, this is a great buy and totally worth the extra $$ in my opinion... i highly suggest checking her out...

as for me...next week im heading to bridal reflections in massapequa to look at some maggies also...

anyone know where st pucchi's may retail cheaper hahaha?

My sister got her dress from Bridal Reflections on 5th Ave. She went during a trunk show & got it cheaper - her designer was Eve of Milady. The crew was very pleasant to work with!
LOVE the Pouchhi dress! If you want to save money & know someone that lives in Jersey, have it shipped there instead & they will not charge you tax!

Good luck!

I see what you mean...both dresses are beautiful but totally different! Both are great choices, but I think I'm partial to the Monet :) You can't go wrong either way!

thanks for the input...i know a lot of maggies can sort of look similar to the st pucchi because of the textures and so forth...so next weekend im going to bridal reflections massapequa to check some stuff out there...but honestly, it doesn't get much better then custom measurements for your gown with the ulla maier
