I went on a 8-day trip to San Jose, Arenal and Manual Antonio, CR, and LOVED it. If you're an active, adventurous person, this is definitely a great HM place!
I didn't enjoy San Jose, the capital city and where all intl flights fly into, as it's dangerous and not very interesting. However, Arenal's great for seeing their active volcano, ziplining, whitewater rafting, rapelling and visiting hot springs. Manuel Antonio is where their famous national park is located, and is great if you enjoy seeing animals. We stayed at Costa Verde Hotel, and saw 3 different types of monkeys, sloths and iguanas just at the hotel alone. We only went to the beach once there, and it was rocky.
Hope this helps!
