Hi everyone! Well, it's not a sever case of acne, but he breaks out when he eats chocolate or greasy foods so he's been staying away from that. Now he says it's not going away, and now it's not so much acne as it is blemishes and marks he has from the acne. Can anyone recommend over the counter stuff for his face or should he go to a dermatologist? Does pro-activ work ... should i bother ordering it?
Thanks!

pro activ definitly works but watch out my friend used it and she didnt have acne that bad a pimple here or there and it really messed up her skin made her red and dry and blotchy.. I think it was too strong for her 'pimples'

I would go to a dermatologist instead of trying OTC remedies. The Dr should be able to prescribe the best remedies and will clear it up in the quickest time.

Re: My fiance needs advice on his acne...
i recently went to the dermatologist because my chin was very red, not pimples but like a rash. I dont know if it was stress or not. I didnt want to take a chance with the weddingbeing so close so i went to the dermatologist. She gave me cream and it has been working. I wouldn;t take a chance, especially if its on the face.

Proactiv stinks..at least it did for me. I would go see a derm - much easier and they are much more experienced.

I agree with Niecey! Proactive made my skin soft but did nothing at all for blemishes!
I went to a derm for a long time with very little improvement as well!
What I have found that works is a product sold on HSN its called serious skin care and their line is wonderful! I just bought a kit and it comes with cleanser, moisturizer and a topical clearer.
Good Luck

Re: My fiance needs advice on his acne...
My NYS licensed esthetician friend got back to me- here is her response:
'Hi, well he could buy procative and see how it works for him, alot of people swear by it, including my sister. He has enough time to see if it'll work for him. He could get facials too, a couple at least to remove blackheads, and other impurities. Tea tree based cleansers are good, Ex.. Jurlique's Foaming Facial Cleanser. At night he can wash his face, and apply pure tea tree oil to the infected area, only a few times a week, because it'll dry him out too much if used too often. Tea tree oil can be purchased at a health food store, or vitamin shoppe. Good Luck'
Hope this advice helps!!!

I HIGHLY recommend Benzaclyn. He has to get a prescription. I found that worked the best for me, because I have oily skin.

Re: My fiance needs advice on his acne...
He needs to go to the dermotologist.. plain & simple.. that Proactive stuff isn't as good as what a dermotologist can give your FI..
I wouldn't put it off either...
It took me 7 months of treatment for my skin to clear up.

Re: My fiance needs advice on his acne...
Ok, i have been battling hormonal acne for the past year
IT SUCK$ my advise to him, is to go to a dermatiologist.. for the 'pimples' that are theree and won't go away, they will give him a shot of cortizone, if they don't mention it tell him to request it.. it is the best, and they will go away.. for scars etc.. tell him to request.. Tazarac Topical ointment, Clindagel, and Erythromycin (antibiotic).. Those three together work wonders.. I LOVE MY FACE.. and the Tazorac isn't bad at all, it's not too harsh.. the clindagel, is a miracle solution.. I LOVE IT... also, tell him to wash everyday and night with eitehr cetaphil (over the counter) or dove cleansing clothes.. they exfoliate and cleanse.. wash his pillow cases every week.. and use a good OIL FREE MOISTURIZER.. be careful, a lot of mosturizer's say oil free, and they aren't!!GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!
BTW: I tried, pro-active and it didn't work at all for me.. IT JUST MADE IT 1) times worse..
If he wants to try one more thing over the counter first (although I reccomend the dermatologist) I wold reccomed a product by AVEDA.. it's called BIOMOLECULAR.. put that on one time a day, and it should clear up some of the acne marks.. But again, I can't stress it more.. go to the DERMATOLOGIST>.
The marks are scars and they usually fade away with time. Jurlique is amazing and so is Dr. Hauschka, but they are on the more expensive side, however, all organic/holistic and when i used dr hauschka (he started jurlique), my skin glowed!!! but i have no money right now. personally, food does it for me, too. i break out when i eat too much soy, and i'm a vegetarian. his skin may also be too dry and is compensating by producing too much oil and that is causing the breakouts. believe it or not, moisturizing with almond oil may balance that out. most guys either are really oily or really dry...either way, he still should see a dermatologist or facialist. in the mean time, change the pillowcases every couple of days...it could also be hair gel getting on his pillow or like that.

I tried pro-active and it did nothing but for my friend it worked wonders. Tell him to get metro gel which is recommended for severe cases at times or benzaclin. Benzaclin dries out pimples and takes redness away so well. i highly recommend it--make sure he moisturizes his face if using it tho, tends to become dry:)

Re: My fiance needs advice on his acne...
Pro active does not do much for me, I just like the granuals in the cleansing lotion. I feel it really gets the dead skin cells off, which does not hurt, but can be rough on sensitive skin. I use a combo of Benzaclin and finevin. Both are perscribed by a dr. You have to use them for a while before they start working...and you have to keep using them even if it clears up. The scars will fade over time, I guess there are some over the counter and holistic products that can help with that. He should go see a derm. But the problem that I have is that everyone of them that I have gone too want to 1) pump me full of oral antibiotics that make my stomach feel so sick! 2) put me on accutane, with no thought on the fact that is causes BIRTH DEFECTS, and I am of child rearing age. When the last derm I went to wanted to put me on that I almost started crying right there. Thankfuly this topical combo has been working good for me so far. I feel for your FI, acne is such a horrible thing to have to deal with, especially as an adult.

Re: My fiance needs advice on his acne...
I just finished a course of Accutane about 1 month ago. I have to say after going to the dermotologist for 10 years.. I'm mad at myself for not going on it sooner.
Yes I am of child-rearing age- but I was VERY careful, did not get pregnant.. and it wasn't an issue b/c we aren't going to try to TTC for a while anyway.

Re: My fiance needs advice on his acne...
Well I am 28 now, and it was just too close to make that kind of choice. If it could do that kind of damage to a child, what does it do to your body? I am very prone to side effects from any meds and it was just tooooooo scary.
