Upstate Areas Not Too Far Away? Please Give Me Ideas!

My FH really wants to move upstate because it's a little cheaper, but I think it's ridiculous if it's a long commute for him to drive, and I would have to take the train. But from Queens, my commute is already an hour anyway.

So does anyone know any nice areas upstate that are only, say, an hour drive away from Queens because I really don't know too much about the areas there? Thanks!

I work with a woman that lives in Nanuet (over the Tappan Zee) I think that's about 45min- 1hour from Queens.

Nanuet is in Rockland County and it isn't much better than Long Island. Try Orange County...prices are much better there and the commute won't be too bad.

I currently live in Putnam countyin Mahopac the prices here vary it depends on the neighborhood and school district. I have to tell you that the prices aren't that much cheaper LI and the taxes in Mahopac are comparable to LI maybe a little cheaper but we get no services for our taxes. I pay additional $42.00 a month for garbage disposal!!!!!!!!!!! ( That really urkes me because my taxes are $7100 with star). However I am in a great 'blue ribbon' school district and have just under an Acre of property. I guess it depends what important to you.

Duthcess county has the best deals you can buy 3000+ square foot homes in the range 350k and up . Depending on school districts. We actually considered a new development in Fishkill, but it is way to far for us. We are actually moving back to Suffolk.

I used to live in Dutchess. All I can say is I think you are paying for the quality of life on Long Island.

Isn't Orange County a really far drive away from Queens though?

Thanks for the help here.

Probably 2-2 1/2 hours...My dad lives in Dutchess (near Orange--Dutchess, Orange, and Ulster are all neighboring counties), and it takes him 2 1/2 hours to get to mid-Suffolk.

Oh yeah, I was trying to find areas of upstate that are only a drive away from Queens where the house prices aren't so expensive.

FH and I are going to look in upper Westchester and Putnam. The prices are still high but there seemed to be some nice homes in the $275K range. It seemed to me that you can get a little more for your money in terms of the amount of property, and in some places the taxes were less.

This is a good site to look on: Houlihan Lawrence

I live in Southern Orange County, it takes us 1hr - 1 hr 15 min to get to Eastern Queens. However if there is an accident or heavy traffic for some reason, forget it. The LI/NYC traffic is CRAZY.. one of the reasons we moved, too many damn people.

Keller Williams

Above is the link to a local realtor... on the other hand, forget it, stay away its getting too crowded here

I would love to give you some areas but what DH and I have found is that 1 hour from Queens (which is about 40 mins from the Bronx, where we are) gets you to about Cold Springs near the Hudson and maybe Katonah on the eastern part of Westchester County. Anything below that to the Bronx is not cheap

Well parts of Mt. Vernon are but then again you wouldn't want to live in some parts of Mt. Vernon

You can try over the Hudson like someone suggested (Nanuet area) but the Tappan Zee Bridge is sometimes a nightmare (traffic jams). You can take the GW Bridge in those cases.

I think that above Westchester it gets cheaper because less people find it easy to commute to NY from that far away. But it's do-able. My aunt lives in Pawling and while Pawling isn't all that cheap (lots of '2nd homes' for the rich and idle are up there) it's not bad either and a 2 hr commute and about 1 1/2 hours from the Bronx.

It takes about 45 minutes to get from Woodbury Commons to the Tappan Zee Bridge and there are some nice houses in that area. We looked at 2bed 2bath condos in Harriman for only $200k!

It could definitely take you a while to get to Queens with the traffic.

Some people I know live around the Bear Mountain area .. and also somewhere in Connecticut. Okay, I know this is not much help .. but it always seems so weird when I hear that people I'm working with live in these areas .. because it seems so far to me .. but, it's really the same distance/time as living east on Long Island .. just a different direction than I'm used to.

Friends of ours moved to Monroe. They have a new house and it is gorgeous! I think the commute to the city is about 20 minutes to the train and then 1 hour from there. He works in the Bronx so it takes him an hour or so depending on traffic. He drives.

I forgot about Pawling - we pass signs for that on our way to Danbury. What about CT? DH and I visit friends in Danbury and door to door from the Whitestone Bridge we can make it in about 1 hour 10 mins. I don't know prices what about Brewster, NY?

Does it have to be NY? Northern Jersey can be very reasonable and the commute is not that bad into NYC. Places like Ringwood or Greenwood lake are quite nice & they are about 1hour from Manhattan. (And just outside of the New York State Border)

Did you look in Tuxedo, NY? or Warwick? Also a bit more reasonably priced.
