Can you believe this???!!! (long)
DH and I applied for a new doggie, a 5 year old daschund and chihuahua mix, because we want to adopt another older dog as a companion for Sparky, the 9 year old chihuahua mix we adopted in September.
The application was through AARF, and in it we were asked if we have a kennel run. We set one up for Sparky - he has a little doggy door that he can use to go outside in the kennel run during the day while we aren't home. It's a chain fence about 4-5ft high. Any dog that we adopt will be able to use it as well.
In the application they referred me to two articles about the dangers of re-vaccination and asked what we would do about it. I've never heard of this before, so I said I would do further research and discuss with my veterinarian.
This was their response:
'Thank you for your interest in Brandy. Sadly, however, your application does not qualify for adoption of an AARF dog for two reasons:
(1) It is AARF policy that a dog cannot be
left unsupervised in circumstances under which
a small child should not be left unsupervised. The use of a doggy door into a fenced area, much less a 4-foot fenced area, is not safe because of the dangers of people and stray dogs.
(2) It is AARF policy that adopters must be willing to take personal responsibility for decision making regarding the well being
of their pet, just as they would do with a
human child. The application did not reflect
a clear understanding of the dangers of annual
revaccinations for parvo/distemper, possibly even deferring such decision making to the discretion of a vet who hasn't previously
suggested annual titres as a safer solution to ensuring immunity to disease without the fatal
consequences of destroying the immune system of dogs and cats.'
UNBELIEVABLE!!! We are the most doting and loving parents to Sparky, AND, when I was a kid, I had a rescue dog that we adopted from AARF! Yet, now, I'm not a suitable parent!!
Edited to say - this is a picture of Sparky.
