people with IBS or spouses with it. can you helP?

dh is pretty certain he has had this for about 15 years. he is trying to formulate a diet that wouldhelp him rather than send him off in pain to the bathroom. so for those of you who suffer from this...what do you eat? can you give me some ideas as to meals or products that don't aggrivate your condition? thank you!

It really does differ with each person. Your DH should try things and see what bothers him and eliminate it. Its sort of a learn as you go thing. So far I have learned I have to stay away from most dairy products, certain vegetables hurt me, iced tea hurts me, as does soda or anything with caffeine in general. He should go to a doctor and see if they can give him a diet to try. I was also told to drink citrucel, although I have found it does nothing for me!! There are some medications that can be prescribed to help with symptoms. I have had it for over 15 years so I feel his pain. It really sucks, bigtime!! Best of luck!!

thanks jamie. he does like the citrucil. however, be honest. do you feel that it really has intruded on your daily life, such as working? just curious. i don't have it so i don't know if he exaggerates the pain or what. sounds terrible, i know, but you know you can sympathize with someone with menstrual cramps? well, i can't with this b/c it is hard for him to describe what living iwth it daily is like.

Hi!
I ave IBS and I bought these 2 books by Heather Van Vorous: Eating For IBS and IBS:The First Year. It has help me tremendously. The basis for the diet is soluble fiber. She also has a website... you should check it out!

has he gone on medication from his doctor? I'm on dicyclomine. Mine is mostly stress related - though spicy foods aggrevate it from time to time.

The medication really helps though.

My sister has it - let's put it this way - they didn't diagnose her for about 5 years - she even had her gallbladder taken out because her doctors thought that was the problem.

In any event - we took a bus trip to Mohegan Sun last summer- she had an attck on the bus on the way home - likely related to something she ate. She took her medication and was still running to the bathroom, asmuch as you can do that on a bus, every 30 seconds for about 3 hours. Then when we got back to the city, i had to bring her to the hospital. SH took her medication and it didn't work - hence the need for the hospital. They treated her and released her. The next day she ended up back at the hospital because she still couldn't eat - turns out all of the barfing, etc., had totally screwed up her electrolytes and she needed magnesium and potassium because hers were basically gone.

Also, a fiber based diet is not something she would recommend. She is on a strict low-fat, low cholesterol diet and eats mostly bland foods. Her attacks have definitely gotten better and she has far fewer than she used to. Also, she cut back on her caffeine intake as well.

We took a trip to Trader Joe's to get some new snacks for her - crackers, low fat cookies (Cat's cookies - they're AWESOME!), etc - she needed something new. She also stays away from dairy and now drinks powdered skim milk.

No matter how painful he says it is - believe him, otherwise he'll think he's crazy. That's what almost happened to my sister because it took so long to figure out what she had

Good luck!!!

My Doctor told me to take 2 fiber pills every day and ever since I did that I have no problems. I take Fibercon or a generic version along with my other vitamins in the morning. I didn't have to change my diet per se. Every once in a while I'll get stressed out and it will act up in which case I take an extra fiber and it's fine. I know that it's working because if i forget to take them, it comes right back. they also told me that if that doesn't work there is a prescription medication for it.

yes there is definitely pain involved. Ihave had it for a while now. It affects everyone differently, for me I have to watch my intake of both fatty and acidic foods. My BIL's baked ziti is torture.

ugh, yes i have IBS. i can't eat certain dairy products or greasy/oily foods. yes, it has effected me while i am at work and it's horrible. the pain, the running to the bathroom, the constant fear that anything i put into my mouth will result in an 'attack'. your hubby should start eliminating foods (but only one or two at a time) to figure out what triggers it. try to be comforting. it's horrible when you can't control your stomach and you have no sympathy.
