Did anyone buy a house with the oil tank underground? Did you have it tested for leaks?

Re: Oil tank underground
We bought a townhouse with an underground tank. We had the soil tested. This was the least intrusive. They have an air test but that can crack the tank. Turned out the soil was fine and there were no leaks. I would get one to be on the safe side.

We are in the process of buying a house but instead of having the soil tested we negotiated to have them abandon the tanks and put a new one in the basement. But their tanks were very old and we weren't comfortable with them b/c if there was any leaks we would've been responsible for the clean-up.

Thats what the engineer said also, so I think we're going to have the soil tested. I rather be safe than sorry.

Let me know if you want the info of the company that did it. I was happy with their service.

I used to work in that field (enviromental construction). FM me if you have any questions, or if you need a reference. (BTW, the company I worked for is no longer in business - so I have no vested interest).
