Anyone hear on the radio this morning...

My aunt was listening to WALK 97.5 this morning and she caught the tail end of a story regarding Suffolk county legislators, and something about grants for first time home buyers. !!??? Anybody know anything about this?? info/weblinks/tel#??

TIA

I think this is what you're referring to. I read about it yesterday.

Down payment grant

Re: Anyone hear on the radio this morning...

the applicant must be a first-time homebuyer; must qualify as a moderate income family as defined by HUD; must occupy the home as a principal residence, and may not have entered into a contract to purchase a home prior to May 1, 2005.

this is very confusing because in the beginning of the article it says:

County Executive Steve Levy announced the funding today at the Lake Ronkonkoma home of a young couple with two children who received a $12,000 grant for their home last year.

unless this couple hadn't yet entered into a contract at the time the grant was issued to them????

Since Suffolk began participating in the program in 1993, more than $4.75 million has been distributed to 996 first-time homebuyers, Levy said in a news release. The release also said that later this year, Suffolk will give out its 1,000th down payment assistance grant.

'must qualify as a moderate income family as defined by HUD'

We went to a first time homebuyers program and if I remember correctly for 2 person family you can't make more than $66,000 or $68,000 per year combined (somewhere in that range).

if this program has been in place since 1993, then why the May 1st cutoff?

Got me. Maybe it's a criteria they have - like with STAR where you have to apply before a certain date.

It's probably just the deadline for this fiscal year. So for next year's cycle, anyone entering into contract from May 2, 2005 to May 1, 2006 would be eligible.

Just a guess. I have no idea!
