Just got called for Jury Duty for the first time... Of course, it is for the first week of school so I obviously can't go... When you postpone they ask for a date you are available. I was thinking of putting down December after Christmas so I would be on a break from school. If I put down a specific date for postponement can they give me a different date? My concern is that my wedding is in November and God forbid they give it to me then- I can't postpone it twice!! Help!!

Re: Jury duty question
Please don't take this question the wrong way, but are you a student or a teacher?
If you are a student, then you can put down a date after you graduate, and after exams (like the Bar, etc...) That is whay they did for me when I got called in.

aaaahh, I see
Put down a date after you wedding & HM then I would think. There should be no harm in putting down after Christmas vacation, like you had stated in your first post.

Re: Jury duty question
Where are you located?
In queens we have to call in and then if our numbers are called we have to go in. If you can postpone it, why don't you just put next summer down?

Re: Jury duty question
Just be careful--I postponed it because theys ent me 1 4 weeks before the wedding and I didnt want to get stuck. I told them I was available after September, and I got a jury duty notice 3 weeks ago!! Luckily, I am married now and live in a different county, so I just had to send them a copy of my new license and marriage license to get out of it. Im sure they will get me soon for Suffolk..

Re: Jury duty question
You can only put down a date 2-6 months from when you were summoned... I would love to be able to put down next summer! I have no problem giving up my winter break I just want to make sure they won't call me before then!!
We call in too... I just cant take the chance of having to go in that first week of school...

Re: Jury duty question
just be careful...they are getting stricter with what they consider 'valid' excuses. They may not allow you to be excused due to work reasons. Especially if a sub can come in and cover you.
I recently had to go to jury duty for THREE DAYS so good luck!!!!!

I don't care if they call me after the date I put down, I just want to make sure they can't give me a date BEFORE what I put down...

Re: Jury duty question
Your employment allows foy you to take days off for jury duty with pay, right?
I would put down any time after your wedding regardless of a break or not if you can still be paid.

Re: Jury duty question
Well I called (didn't expect to talk to anyone!) and they said they can NOT call you before the date you request for your postponement which is good news. She did say that they are closed a good part of the month of December as well as the first week of January so I can't do it over my school break anymore... I will just pick a date after the wedding and go when they call... Thanks for all your help!!

Re: Jury duty question UPDATED ON BOTTOM
I have been called as both a student and a teacher. As a student, I had no problem getting a postponement until the summer and they did call me again at the time I requested. I served as a teacher in another area, so my experience there may not apply here.
I was called last June and there were teachers on the jury with me who did not get a postponement- they got called during the last week of school last year.

They usually have you call when you are available. If they send you something before then and you are unable to do it, you can postpone until the summer. You ae allowed to postpone 3 times.
